I know it's a newbish question but I had to ask, what's the difference between 60Hertz and 85Hertz and 75Hertz etc? and what's the best refresh rate to use? ^^"

Edit: I'm asking this Q cuz I'm using 60Hertz and my friend told me to use 85Hertz cuz its better and doesn't hurt my eye

Ok, first of all, higher is better. Anything under 75 hurts my eyes and trust me, once you get used the high refresh rates (my monitor supports 120 and I use it) any time you go to a friends and see a low refresh rate (especially one under 70) you will immideatly feel something is wrong.

Trust me, turn it up as high as you can without losing performace or a shard image.

Anything under 60 is noticeable and as such will cause migraines, head aches and may even damage your vision, anything over 75 is unnoticeable to the human eye.

ok hers a pickle for you guys.

my refresh rate in the setup says 100, desktop is actualy 85, i start STEAM and DOD CS its 60, but rise of nations is 100.

no solve this problem ull get a cookie, i mean a pickle.

Depends on the game, on my desktop and my monitor its 120, but when I start playing CS on 1600 by 1200 it drops down to 75 or 80 can't remember.

Winxp sets fullscreen apps using direct3D or opengl at the default rate of 60mhz, check out guru3D.com for the refresh rate fix, here's the one I use:

10q u all for the info!!! :)
I changed my 60Hertz to 85Hertz and I can see the difference, btw, I got MAG 786PF and the highest refresh rate that I can get is 85Herzt (after marking the "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display"). I think it shows me only 85Hertz as the highest refresh rate cuz my monitor is on Plug and Play, do u think thats the "problem"?

It's not really a problem but having the correct drivers will probably let you go higher. There's one way of being sure, go to the displays tab and check the "Use DDC information" and you can also see the max res. and refresh rate your monitor allows.

No-one seems to have mentioned LCD panels, which can be used quite comfortably at 60Hz without any sign of eye-strain. This has to do with the way the image is drawn on screen; this is why all my games run at 60fps (having enabled v-sync) no more, no less, no tearing, and thankfully no more headaches.

Ok guys a quick question if you will please. I use to have a GeForce2 64 meg, I think, anyway I have a new dell monitor and with the nvidia card I could get 120 refresh, but now I have a 9600XT and if I check the "hide modes that this monitor can't display" it only says its capable of only doing 85. Is it safe to crank it up to atleast 100? Maybe even 120? Thanks for the time.

If you change the resolution that you run it in it affects the possible refresh rate.

So the resolution is probably different on your new card, from when you were using the old one.

For example i can have 85khz in 1024x768
but can only have 75khz in 1280x1024

I wouldn't worry about it not going higher than 85, anything over 75 should be fine.

LCDs have one thing you can't fix, Motion Blur. But they are otherwise good. ;)

The best way I like to show people the difference between refresh rates is have them set it to 75 or 85 and look away from the monitor but look at it with your peripheral vision. Then set it to 60Hertz and do the same.

So many people complain about motion blur on LCD's. I have never noticed it. When I used to play games on one of my parents old laptop I never noticed any blur. And when im at my friends house playing unreal 2004 or battlefeild I have never noticed any motion blur on his LCD. The only thing I didnt like about the LCD was that the colours werent as brite. They looked dull. And if your at an angle from the screen, the colours appeard black. My crt never does that.

My friend used to point out Motion Blur whenever someone would by a new LCD and bring it to LANs.
He then bought an LCD himself and now says he doesn't see any difference. I guess you get used to it or something.

I never want to dull my senses! lol jk

Actually on the higher end LCDs, motion blur is a thing of the past, it's only evident on older/cheaper LCDs.

Ive been having head aches everyday, and I didnt know why.

I noticed my rate was at 60 thxs to this thread....thxs!!11 :D, eventhough i'm still getting them, I hope they will stop soon, cause my rate is now 70 :)
