Hey..I already searched this and found nothing some I'm hoping you'll have some answers...

I'm going to re-install HL2, because after I changed my graphics card, the sound for HL2 has never been the same. I've asked around at a billion places but no one has given an answer that fixes it, so I'm hoping that reinstalling will help.

All other games like SWAT 4 works in perfect harmony with sound and graphics. The graphics can be set to the high setting on it, and it won't mess up the sound. In order for my sound to work in HL2, I have to turn my graphics down to the lowest setting, and I don't think its worth having a new graphics card if I have to have worse settings than my old card in order to hear the sound crisp.

By the way, the sound crackles, pops and acts sluggish...

So are there any tips I need to follow in reinstalling HL2 so that I won't lose my CD key?

do try re-installing it. might make a difference. worked for me anyway. also make sure you have up to date drivers.

you can't "lose" your cd-key as long as you remember the username and password for your steam account

Uh, save your save games wich are located in the hl2/savegames folder

also defrag ur drive ffs :)

And a total reinstall is always the bomb!

btw both the links in your sig are broken it appears...

Indeed they are...I haven't been on here to update it in quite a while...

So as long as I remember my user/pass to steam I can continue with a re-install?

I've already defragged my hard drive about twice since the problem started, but it didn't work. I'm hoping re-installing it will work, because on prodigy in CSS, If I look at the top of the vents, the sound begins making weird sounds, so I'm thinking its corrupt files in the gcf...I've already tried erasing "local content" and then telling steam to play the game which kind of re-installed it, but it didn't work like I thought..So i'm just going to give it a total re-install...

Whats the best way to give it a COMPLETE re-install?

Uninstall all of your games (right click in steam "delete local content"), then go to add/remove programs in the control panel, remove Steam. Then check if your Steam folder is still there... if it is, delete it. Then re-install... if you have the retail version of HL2, then just install Steam from the CDs.

I don't have the CD. I downloaded it from steam, and something about your post smells like bullshit.

Okay, then instead of installing from the CDs/DVD just re-download everything. And I have no idea what you mean by my post being bullshit.... you asked how to do a complete re-install, and I told you.

*shrug* i dunno..a lot of people on here post things like that..."Well to have god mode, you push F10!!!"

Well if you are gone say peoples posts are bullshit you dont need to ask advice

There are smart-ass people out there that give advice like that. Whether YOU realize reality from fiction is totally up to you, but I'm taking the option of looking out for people who do give ass-based answers.

You'd kind of expect someone with over 1000 posts to be genuine enough in answering your questions though.

I would follow Diluted's advice - remove the games individually, so that your 'Play Games' window shows all the icons greyed out, then uninstall Steam, then finally delete the left over Steam folder from your HDD. Follow this with a good old defrag (your Steam folder would have used 2-3GB and deleting that much could upset your HDD).

Once that's all done, restart the PC, then re-install Steam, log-in and download HL2 from scratch. Wait for a day (slight exaggeration) and then it'll be all shiny and new when you get back.

And you promise thats not going to make me lose my Half-Life 2 account?

No, his advice should work fine. That's the way I've reinstalled before, and it worked. The only weird thing was that using "Delete Local Content" under the Steam menu didn't seem to uninstall HL2 completely -- so when I put the cd back in, I just clicked "Uninstall HL2" from the menu that autoruns with the cd.

The info on how to uninstall Steam is here. It's basically the same as what they've said.

And on a side note, reinstalling did nothing to fix the problems that I was having, but my problem was / is really weird: The actual game works fine but the menus tend to freeze up so I can't change options or save/load games properly... ;(

Didn't fix my problems..it still cracks and speeds up a lot...its really annoying..

I went through the Red Letter Day chapter, and when Kleiner is explaining something, its sped up by 5 times...Usually happens when the water is in focus on the screen, or when looking at reflections...

My guess is that the video card is trying to render all this stuff, and its taking away from the audio card, screwing everything up..

I have 512 gb ram by the way...
