Release before August?

Yes, but waiting for August isn't going to be so fun. What are we supposed to do until then, we've run out of things to discuss :rolling:

1 month is all we have to wait, july.

go take up painting or drawing or find a good couple books or something.

September is a tentative date, but as far as i can gather... its more likely to see it in October\november.

come on guys, we should be happy.....solid release info!!!

plus we'll have stuff to discuss when the binks come out, and i know most people here think the e3 vids have all been discussed to death but the binks will be in higher quality and we'll notice more details in the maxed out graphics, so we'll have plenty to discuss

I think I would say September as well. I think a release date of September 30th would be pretty funny, but I doubt that would happen. So I'd look for it in mid-September, like around the 12-15th or so. Just my guess though.

for a release date, i'd have to go for late july early august. not realistic, but a man can hope

D3 is due for 30th of august, I bet HL2 goes gold before that date, wether it will be in shops or on Steam, is a another question.

i don't think hl2 is there main concern, i think it's cs:s
I doubt that so very very much. Which would you consider more important - something you have worked on for nearly six years that has had an extremely turbulent, stressful development or a quick port from something that already exists onto the technology you slaved on?

i think that hl2 wil be released near the beginning of august but it could possibly be later august... the game seems really like it is just getting the finishing touches put on it..

So Merc, when you played it, it felt like an official release, like its done?
because if you think it feels like what you would expect the final to feel like, we are realy close to the gold date

well as long as it aint september 9th, cos i gotta go to Paris for 2 days with the mrs! boohoo me :) Seriously tho, i think september earliest.

Makes sense that ATi and Valve would want to release HL2 around the same time as Doom 3. The two games will be going head to head, and some consumers will be confused as to which game to buy, so they will turn to reviews. Valve should be confident that they will be able to beat Doom 3 on the storyline, gameplay, and multiplayer aspects of the game, so they will likely get better reviews than Doom 3, which appears to be a glorified tech demo for id's engine (same can be said about HL2, but there's a lot more game in the HL2 package than what we've heard about Doom 3 so far). If Valve can go head to head with id and come out on top, it would reflect real well on the company and it's work. With the two graphics card giants helping prod the two companies to release their games (we all know the developers will have the final say on the release date, but some pressure will help), an August release for both games seems realistic.

well, my prediction is that cs:s will be one of the main extras in the se edition of hl2, and i also beleive that valve wants the release dates of all the edtions to be simultaneous, thus they want to finish cs:s and get out all of the bugs before the game goes gold so they can do mass release of all editions

They'll probably make release date September 29th, as a joke.

It's possible, but Valve have said they're aiming for August, so it's unlikely.
It'd be nice if a developer actually finished a project early for once.

I, for one, really hope they don't release it on Sept 30. It would just be an insult to all of us. That date will live in infamy and should never be mentioned again.

Of course it's possible, but no it won't happen. What kinda question is that though? Is it possible for HL2 to come out before August? That's like asking if it is possible for me to jump off a building.... it's possible but it isn't going to happen. You guys it's great that some of you are optimistic. But really, do you think that after Valve were SO sure that half life 2 was coming out right up untill 2 weeks before Sep 30th they are going to make it by an un official date given by Vivindi... or how ever it's spelt. THEY ARE FRECNH FOR CRYING OUT LOUDE! If valve thought they could get it out by August they would have said so. Most likely they are keeping quiet because this unofficial date is enough to keep us on our toes untill they can come up with an actual date.... which they will probably announce some where around august. Of course this is just my thoughts and I could be wrong, hopefully I am. But logic tells me im not.

Hmm. That could've been said a year ago! No, early September at the latest.

If I were Valve, I'd give a date quite a bit later than what you expect, so that if anything happens there's some slack time.
Maybe that's what they did when they said they'd give it to Vivendi sometime in August?!

We're hoping so. I don't think that means we'll see the game before August but just early on if we're lucky, perhaps even mid-august.

August is unlikely, November is more likely if not later, its all about sales, since theres no way its going to be released in less then 2 months, might aswell sell it for christmas.

Gabe is saying August, so I will trust him and go with August.

Excuse me. Could you stop bending over - it's a bit too muffled when you're talking OUT OF YOUR ASS!!

I thought this had been cleared up. Big games like Half-life 2 and Doom 3 can release it when they want and still get big sales. If they release it in late August/early september, they get the initial release sales which will last for a month before they drop a bit. Then it's the holiday season and sales shoot right back up again. Both games will sell a bucket load so really, you have no idea what you are talking about.

Edit: That flame made me chuckle. No offence buddy but seriously...

Im just being very optimistic. :frog:

seriosuly though, it will be shipped at earliest, October.

Do you know somthing Gabe doesn't?

If I was in as much financial trouble as VU, I wouldn't even think about sitting on the agme until the Holiday Season. Seriously, if you release a game before Holiday Season, it gives time for people to hear about the game, and put it on their Wish Lists.

God damn that's a good set of points. Vivendi want to appear to be succedding after the recent troubles they have had, why sit on somehting that will actively help the share price for the sake of sales, which any decent market research would demonstrate, aren't going to be dependent on spending seasons.

In fact due to the vast fan base it is far more likely the 'hard-core' geming consumers would get the game as soon as possible and their relative judements, hopefully all being extremely positive would cause word to leak out to the mainstream.

This would coincide wonderfully with the Christmas spending period in all likelihood and would create a second wind of sales.

Best move would be to release the game with very little advertisement presence, just use the internet and games magazines, after this wait until the Christmas season and then vamp up some TV spots and put a large presence into general sales promotion.

Delaying this game to wait for some arbitrary season will provide no real beenfits and hopefully they are clever enough to recognise this, if not they could hire me to tell them.

Exactly. I don't see people's point when they say they will wait until the Holiday Season "for the money." In my eyes, such an action would likely prevent sales from rising to their potential.

It doesn't matter when the game is released, it will still seel sh*t loads, so I very much doubt that anyone's worried about Christmas sales boost. Besides, it is exactly SIX MONTHS till X-mas. If anything, sitting on such a hot product for that long is a rubbish marketing decision. Especially when they know it has to compete with games like Doom3.
They'll release it as soon as possible.

EDIT: As many people above me have stated. Bum.

I bet we'll see HL 2 in August, Gabe Newell posting that he is busy shipping the game right now is a very good sign. I mean, how long does it take to get a finalized product ready to ship? It's still only June, we have over a month before the first day of August and I doubt it would take that long for Valve to get HL 2 to VU, Then once VU has the game, give them one month max to get it on store shelfs (I also doubt it would take that long) and hence we are looking at a late August release date assuming Valve and Vinvedi take their sweet time. At least that's just what I think.. actually that's what I'm hoping for but I'm probably wrong, it seems like if something makes sense, they do the opposite =(
