release date of 11/16/04 is a bad idea.

Most games after going gold can be released 2 weeks afterwards. This is about the time it takes to press the CD's DVD's and distribute to retailers.

So if HL2 went gold on the 18th and it was sent to the manufacturer for pressing, why is it going to take 3 and a half weeks to be released?

the following big name games will be out before Half Life 2:
Halo 2, World of Warcraft, EQ2, GTA: San Andreas, and Need for Speed Underground. Hell, even Vampire: Bloodlines that is BUILT off of the HL2 engine will be out by that time!

They are also releasing on the same day as Prince of Persia 2, Sid Meyer's Pirates!, and Blinx 2.

ALL of these titles are going to be vying for the wallets of gamers. I think it would have been in Valve and Vivendi's best interest to release it by Haloween (or the Tuesday after) to beat the Halo 2 release. I do not see the reasoning.

Its going to be a good month of games.:D

Also the majority of them are console games - targeted at a different market.

World of Warcraft and EQ2 will not make November releases. Quote me on that.

Not to mention none of those games are as anticipated as Half-Life 2. If given the choice, the average person who is interested in HL2 and one of those other games is going to pick HL2.

Dont flame.
As for what you said, HL2 is doing a worldwide release, so they have to make enough copies for the whole world, not just a few countries.

Do you think that many people are going to pass up the sequel to the best game ever? I doubt it. People are going to buy Halo 2, GTA: SA etc. yes, but why they'd miss out on Half-Life 2 just because they already bought a game...

well i already reserved both Halo 2 and HL2, so i will be getting both games, the thing that ticks me off is that they are a week a part, when i reserved them both, i was expecting HL2 to be released in sept and have two months to play it and then have Halo 2, right now it seems that i will play halo 2 first and a week later play hl2 only, as for the rest of those games, there is always christmas

Vampire: Bloodlines Cant come out before hl2 its been confirmed. Most of those are console games anyway. If was interested in all of those. It wouldnt effect me buying hl2. Iwould just buy all.

There you go.

Maybe you're right, I'd be keen on an earlier release myself but surely they (as the publishers) would have lots of information on buying habits?

#1 You're an idiot and don't know what you're talking about.
#2 They can't print 3 million copies +, and deliver.. and get on the shelves before November 16th - If they could, they would.
#3 A game doesn't go Gold until it's finished, and the publisher is happy with it - So therefore why would Vivendi publish an unfinished game?. (If it had gone gold earlier it would have been unfinished and potentially buggy, and only if it was unfinished and buggy would it be out by halloween.)

I am glad is is releasing in Nov.

Gives me time to get some cash :D

Yes, me saying the game should be released sooner warrents telling me to "shut the hell up".

The intellect of the internet and the people using it astounds me.

WoW and EQ2 both have guaranteed release dates of Nov. 15th.

ass

dont get carried away people...buyers in this season are not hardcore gamers so :wow, gta, and eq2 will sell a LOT more than the game we all know is superior:)

releasing a game as anticipated as hl 2 is, there is no possible day they could release it for it to be considered a "bad day" to release...

Source? Blizzard does not give out release dates, so right there you are lying.

that just means we won't have another drought of games.

also, don't forget that everyone who read the pcgamer review and saw hl2 get a 98%, that will tell a lot of people what to spend their money on

People, calm down. For those who want to buy Halo 2, and GTA:SA eagerly, they will buy them. If they STILL want to buy Half Life 2 just as, if not more eagerly, then they'll buy HL 2 as well. I already have Halo 2 pre-ordered, and HL 2 collectors Edition all paid up in full.

Who says you can only buy one game?

And, as someone else stated, most of these are console games.
Also, I honestly don't care how well HL2 does financially (I'm not receiving any of the profit), all I care is whether it's a good game.

Why is he stuck with the burden of proof if you can just say whatever the hell you want without providing a "source"?

Whether it's released in November or even after 3-6 months, HL2 still be the best selling game.

Are you a marketing director? have you done any studies that would back up your claim? do you have any fancy charts or graphs to show us?

So true CB. Valve, I am sure, has an entire marketing division devoted to analyzing and interpreting how well other games will do and have done and when they are released during the year--Valve is not just releasing HL2 to on a whim here.

All I know is that it's gonna be a great season for games, I'm sure each and every one of them will sell like hotcakes. :)

If WoW and EQ2 are released on the 15th... well I'll eat my hat and send you the remains.

You guys do realize that this is a simultaneous release WORLDWIDE? It's a small miracle that they can make that many copies to actually MEET the november 16th release date.

Not one of the games you mentioned is being produced and
marketed on a scale that matches HL2. Not one of those games has a global simultaneous release date.

I'm sure Valve are positively browning their pants.

They will come out on time, im sure most MMO games do but they are released when they are not ready and for awhile you pretty much p2p a beta because there so buggy and inbalanced.

They are also releasing on the same day as Prince of Persia 2, Sid Meyer's Pirates!, and Blinx 2.!!!!

i bet gabe cant sleep at night :|

no one who would buy hl2 would get those games instead if they compared them with hl2

Unfortunately, I'm afraid this is true.

These games are probably releasing english version first, whereas Valve is releasing a simultaneous global release in various languages. This is a much larger scope and in theory, could reduce some warez in other parts of the world who can get a legit copy of HL2 in their language instead of downloading the english version first.

WoW will come out soon, I played the beta, that game is more finished than most MMO's are when they're released. EQ2 wont make it's scheduled date. They havent even started stress testing yet, and that game will NEED a stress test.

It's always rough releasing games at this time of the year. You're never going to get a time where "BIG GAME A" is released months ahead of "BIG GAME B". There's always about 8 huge titles released at this time of year, and 5 of those are usually swept under the rug. Half-Life is a big enough name where it'll more than likely be a top 3.

The initial release will be slower, certainly, but I have a feeling that it'll pick up speed as time goes on. A lot of people have either played the original, seen the reviews, play[ed] Counter Strike, or will be interested in modding or playing the mods. That, and the expantions (assuming they require the original) will bring more people to buy HL2.

So don't concern yourselves with the release, instead hope for a steady, positive atmosphere to follow Half Life 2 around. :)

Gamespot has WoW slated for "Q4 2004". Doesn't sound like a specific November 16th release date to me, and Gamespot usually jump all over release dates.
