release date of 11/16/04 is a bad idea.

LOL, now this is what I call a dumb post!.

It doesn't matter when, how or why Half-Life 2 is released it's simply gonna sell bajillions.

For god sake, you've waited this long, i'm sure you can wait until November 16th!

Half-Life is still the most played game online so I think everyone must have heard of it and HL2. And if they read the reviews and compare the score with other games they will probably choose HL2. And if you can't choose between two games you can buy them both. And if you don't have enough money you can buy one game first (HL2 for example ;)) and the other game after a month or something like that. And about the console games, they're only playable on a console and HL2 isn't :) so HL2 doesn't get much competition from them.

And WHEN is it a good time to release. Never. After November we get the holidays and that's also a popular releasetime. The summer is usually the most boring if you look at releases. So be happy Vivendi and Valve release it as soon as possible instead of avoiding other releases by putting the releasedate back

why does it take longer to press the cd's / dvd's? because they'll need more than any other game :D

I dont care about:

* Halo 2
* World of Warcraft
* EQ2
* GTA: San Andreas
* Need for Speed Underground
* Vampire: Bloodlines
* Prince of Persia 2
* Sid Meyer's Pirates!
* Blinx 2 (wtf is that?)

I just want to have HL2 :>

No, wait!!111 i also care about WoW but this a different genre...

The first day of sales can't possibly account for so much revenue as to warrant the need for an earlier release date.

Its out before the holiday season. I PROMISE you, that is the only thing Vivendi cares about (besides putting a polished, finished product on the shelves, I hope.)

I'm in the closed beta test for WoW and have been since around May. I really don't see it coming out a month from now.

Yes, the game is a blast, but there are still several balance issues and classes that aren't finished. If there are a couple big patches in the next month, then the possibility of it being released next month, I suppose, is possible, but WoW patches have taken longer than the development team expected almost every single patch.

Examples of things that aren't finished:
Paladin ability rework
Paladin Talents
Hunter Talents
PvP balance
Melee class aggro management (esp. for paladins)
PvP honor system
Weapon/armor durability system

Etc. etc. I would rather have Blizz take their time and get all of those things polished for retail, and they have a history of doing just that.

I highly doubt HL2 will be competing with WoW and EQ2 as far as timelines are concerned. Plus they're entirely different genres. When I get burned out on the WoW beta I go play Counter-Strike: Source.

Im sure its already been mentioned, but november has always been a hot month for new titles, its the start of the holiday rush.

The 3 weeks can be put down to a number of things, one (like flupke said) 6 cds is a pretty hefty number, secondly Half-Life 2 is one of those few games that is being localised with full audio into 10 languages (i believe halo2 is also having multiple language copies but the release dates are being staggered apart).

Usually the US version comes out within 2 weeks, and other countries take 3-4 weeks, (or 6 months if you look at DXIW) the nature of half-life 2s popularity and spoilable content, makes a simultanious release alot nicer, hence the extra week or so.

I suggest people find somthing to do with themselves instead of finding a new way to moan about the wait each day. :D

Not everyone buys games the day/week there released. HL2's reputation will keep it high in the charts for ages.

See if i didn't already have HL2 for free now i know for sure i wouldnt be buying 2 games at 50$ a crack cuz i really want GTA SA so oh well since i can still get GTA SA with money i saved from not buying HL2 ( ATI VOULCHER) BUTTT if i had to chose it would be HL2 it dosn't matter halo 2 and GTA are on xbox and hl2 is pc what matters is the price is still the same!

As far as that goes...I'm in the JTL beta and I'm not even gonna bother mentioning all the unfinished/not working crap that is in Jump to Lightspeed that they are still shoving out the door for a mid november release. (I dropped out about a week ago when they changed the way the flight model for the 3rd or 4th time....Yupt, they dont even have flying finalized for what is essentially a flight simulator that ships in a few weeks)

SOE has a rediculous assumption that people dont mind paying while they develope products, or buying them broken out of the box to be fixed later. Hell Galaxies was released in an all-but-unplayable state and is still "broken" to this day. I dont doubt EQ2 will make its release date...ready or not.

WoW on the other hand is Blizzards baby, and they are probably gonna nurture it until its ready.

lol, wtf? Someone was having fun with php.

idiot

Eh..whoops.

Anyways, as for the number of games sold, it would be alot. What I would really like to know is the ratio between Steam packages sold to retail packages sold.

Retail will be like 95% i bet. Loads of casual gamers who wont even of heard of steam.

People just arnt getting the point.......
It doesnt matter when it comes out or wut comes out before it!!!!!!!
ITS STILL HL2
JEEZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No no, steam will get its share too. 30% or so I expect. Most people do prefer having CDs at their disposal though. Online shopping is all the rage now, but people might not like the idea of a 'virtual copy'.

#1 You're an idiot and don't know what you're talking about.
#2 They can't print 3 million copies +, and deliver.. and get on the shelves before November 16th - If they could, they would.
#3 A game doesn't go Gold until it's finished, and the publisher is happy with it - So therefore why would Vivendi publish an unfinished game?. (If it had gone gold earlier it would have been unfinished and potentially buggy, and only if it was unfinished and buggy would it be out by halloween.)

#1 Pointless flame
#2 Wrong.
#3 They could have it out by halloween if they wanted to.

You have no idea how fast they can pump out these cds and dvds now. The game could be out in 2 weeks if they wanted it to be.

I wouldnt consider any of the games listed in the first post as potential sales damagers.

especialy halo 2 wich isnt even for the PC ffs. (i realise it will be ported craply to the pc in 2005)

Hl2 will break the world record for most sales of a PC game in its first week, its garuanteed with the world wide release and steam.

funnyily enough my dad just agreed to let me get the Gold package from steam after swearing i wouldnt ever get another game from the net not 3 weeks ago... (i had to explain a bit)

Nov. 16 H A L F L I F E 2 sweet!!!!!

oh looky... METAL GEAR SOLID 3 SNAKE EATER Nov 17...

Oh shi......i want MGS3, AND HL2...

/goes to rob local bank

I do not see the reasoning.

Not to be mean but that is probably why you do ot own your own company.

Not that they are doing this on purpose BUT if you had $50 which would you buy if all of those games came out on the same day?

Valve/VU might be throwing down the gauntlet. Proving what they can do. Proving that their game/system (Steam) is the best. What better way to do it then go against someone head to head.

Just like John Wayne.

Damnit, this is the first time EVER that I have not had spare money to buy games. ****ing tuition hike!

News flash UofA, YOU DO NOT NEED ANY MORE BUILDINGS!

shut up Chiablo don't u think we've waited long enough ?

Boy, you might be legally retarded.

One thing you need to consider is just because you only buy PC games it does not mean that other people play PC and that's it.

I have a gaming quality PC, Xbox, Gamecube, and GBA; if a good title comes out for one of those systems, I'll pick it up. But I can't afford to buy 4 games all in one week(the same is true with most people.)

Let's say Halo 2, Half-Life 2, and Metroid Prime 2 all come out the same day. I personally will blow my money on Half-Life 2, but 90% of the people I work with would rather have Halo 2 and Metroid Prime 2 instead, then try to bum a copy of HL2 off of me later. BUT if HL2 were released 2 weeks before the rest, that percentage would be drastically different (it would probably be around 75% of them buying HL2 instead of 10%.)

I just wish they would have released HL:S before HL2 so I can play through HL:S first then play HL2 straight after to continue the story.

As it stands I REALLY want to play HL:S then HL2 so I'll be waiting longer than 16/11...or so I hope I can hold off on HL2......

I don't think people realize the behemoth in terms of sales Half-Life 1 was...

Every other publisher who has a November date is feeling a bit queasy right now. ;)

One thing to remember about the release date is the whole Valve - Vivendi deal. Perhaps they could have released the game sooner were it not for Steam. Steam makes it possible for people to get localized versions of HL2 at the same time. If people in other countries had to wait to get an actual cd in their language, or just go get it on Steam, where do you think they would go? So in order to not piss off Vivnedi too much, they agreed to release the game at a date far enough away to ensure Steam doesn't get an advantage over retail.

Chiablo, don't be greedy, i know for alot of people, this is perfect, and it would take them a long time to make enough games for the whole world, it takes a long time.

Not to mention none of those games are as anticipated as Half-Life 2. If given the choice, the average person who is interested in HL2 and one of those other games is going to pick HL2.

Amazing how you know the motives and actions of every average person.

Only the first two games on your list have even the smallest chance of competing for sales with HL2. Halo2 has the issue that it isn't a direct competitor, but lets keep in mind that they share a lot of the same customer base. I think Halo 2 will compete heavily with HL2, but a lot of people will end up with both, as they are the most anticipated titles on their respective platforms. WoW is on the same platform and has the benefit of a name very near if not equally as big as Half-Life. But it's also a MMORPG with a hefty monthly fee. I think it will not sell half as many copies. I've played it's stress test beta and as much as I loved it and will buy it...it won't be for a few months, it jsut wasn't all that special. Persoanlly I think this guys just ranting and wining because he wants his copy now.

God forbid somebody should have to either.

A. wait a few days/weeks to get 2 games
B. save up before hand and get a few games at the same time
C. pick one game he wants more.

Just becuase some guy is taking a hissy fit becuase valve arent bothered about some console game does by no means make the 16th a bad release date.

In the past 10 years of my life ive been a pc gamer and i would say 8 of those years i was poor, but somehow i was able to get money together and pick between a selection games, cant see why its so hard for this guy.

Hahah, I think the LAST thing VALVe should be worried about is competition.. I mean, come on. I'm pretty sure anyone who wants it is going to get it.

Are you 35 and live in your parent's basement?

and i think half life 2 is going to sell WAY more than these games except for maybe possibly halo 2

-merc

half life 2 will still have the majority of the buys, i bet.

but it is that you have to have a GOOD computer to play it.

Im very excited for GTASA... Halo 2 too, but im not dropping 150 for it (rather 200) 70% of the XB games are either
A. On PS2/GC
B. On PC(WITH MOUSELOOK!)
c Not worth mentioning
