release date of HL2

Maybe a dumb question, but: HL2 is ready to roll (many magazines have already played it) and there is already the possibility to download it via Steam directly from Valve web site (so no need to wait till it is on DVDs and in stores). So WHAT are ppl from Valve waiting for, why cant we download, activate and play HL2 by now? Marketing reasons? Hardly. There is no other comparable 3D shooter in development with close release date which could endanger the position of HL2 and even if there would be, it couldnt endanger HL2 (and we all know that Stalker will be released sometimes during spring 05)

Valve can't release it until Vivendi are ready to release the retail copies to the shops (part of the contract between the companies). It takes time to manufacture these. Therefore.....we have to wait. Or at least that's how I understand it.....

That never gets old. :p

The reason it will be released that same time retail and Steam is that Vivendi would lose a lot of money with pre-Steamsale, and it wouldn't be fair to those that can't/don't want to buy it through Steam.

i wonder when does hl2 get released?

were you born yesterday?(or were you being sarcastic :rolling: )

Vivendi stop them brining it out , if Valve release the game on Steam b4 Vivendi's retail copies then no 1 wuld wait and buy the retail copies, thus no business for Vivendi.

Well, as far as I know you are not right. There will be no players of HL2 without the connection to the web, while the online registration and therefore the connection to the web is REQUIRED for the player to be able to install HL2 {in order to prevent pirate copies, but i think this system at any rate will fail} (and here is also a paradox, HL2 is the first game in history, which doesn't have multiplayer and REQUIRES internet connection}, so it can't be the reason why they want to hold the release and wait until HL2 will be on DVDs, thats all. And about that unfair attitude to the people that CAN but DOESN'T want to buy it through web: I think it's a little bit weird to, on one side, don't want buy a game via web and, on the other hand, be sad that other, who don't mind buyng it via web already have it. To be sure it's not their concern that some ppl have it already bought via web, coz that fact doesn't affect them in any way.

Well, that makes sense {they surely have it in their contract with Vivendi}, but the fact is also that the distribution via web is much more lucrative for Valve because it can overpass the distributor, which adds tenths of percentage to the final price and therefore save these percentage for Valve and, eventually, sell the game cheaper and thus make it even more competitive {not looking on fact that HL2 surely doesn't need this type of support :-D }

Your probably right.

just a speculation

It has been said already that Valve won't sell HL2 via Steam till release on DVDs because of contract with Vivendi and the loss of profits from classic distribution, BUT, at least they could make it available via web NOW, BUT for MUCH MUCH higher price, for example 200 Dollars or so {or find other price that would be the best}, WHY not, it's just the matter of relation between the supply and demand {and bet there are MANY ppl that would buy it now for much higher price, including me} {btw. this is normal price strategy in marketing called "cream prices" which exploits these "horny" ppl that would do ANYTHING to play HL2 NOW! and thus also pay MUCH more money for that privilege

Halo 2 is coming out on the 11th, Killzone on the 19th, its going to be a three-way bloodbath

I wonder what time of day HL2 will become available & unlocked??

I think if its the middle of the night (I live in the UK) then I may have to stay up for it.. I have already booked the week off work!

Well, at least the power plants should prepare for this date, the power consumption will be huge no matter there is day or night...

Yes, a bloodbath. On different continents at different times, in different languages. (For those of you not party to my inner mind's workings: HL2 = PC launch, Halo 2 Xbox launch, etc ...)

Chill! Is it not better to have them see this link than to be flamed? Cmon, it's not exactly killing you :)

Well, I'm gonna take this opportunity to say '0wned!' to Striker :p Hehe

And then point out my rather cutsey lil avatar. Then point downwards to my no more socks link.

A tenuous link to the rest of the thread, you may think, but I feel any links to sites with cool stuff should help calm those all het up by HL2 imminencynessnessness.

Enjoy, and buy cool stuff!
