Hopefully this is the right section to release maps in?

ptl_alleyhop_v1
This is a relatively short map, but makes up for it in what it teaches you. The skill that you learn while completing this map is something that you never really needed to use in Portal, so mastering it in this map could increase your knowledge about what portals can do. I guarantee you that it is possible to complete. There are at least two different techniques that can be used to complete the map, one involving lots of player movement, the other involving very little.

You may find it difficult to place portals on small wall sections completely surrounded by metal. This is not the result of poor mapping. I'm guessing this is a big reason why you don't see these kinds of walls in Portal, since it takes lots of trial and error until its finally placed. Use your assets!

Reasons why this is _v1:
- This was made before the official SDK release, so I was unable to build cubemaps.
- I had to use an alternative method to making metal walls block portals. The only difference you'll notice between now and when the official SDK is out, is the friction when walking on metal. Everything else is the same.
- The only particle effect which I could find for making the goo hazier looking, was very large and could not be fitted into tight hall spaces which this map has. It resulted in the effects bleeding over into other parts of the map and causing lots of drops in frame rate, and it looked just plain ugly.

All these things will be fixed in the final version.

note: Theres a part near the end that you may feel your only choice is to kill your self and start over. You CAN NOT get stuck in this map. The way out is just not very obvious :).

I couldn't really figure anything out. I feel retarded. :(

Not bad at all.

i had to skip one thing: When you reach the end of the second tunnel (before reaching a flat place)... I don't see how to get to it. Pic spoilered because it could show how to get through the prior parts.

Also, what is the 'intended' method for doing the long jump? I had already seen it, and i think I did it by a method you might want to fix.

I set one portal to the platform below, dropped to it without going through, and then scooting forward put the second portal on the long jump panel way above, then used the portal next to me, landed in it again falling from the top, and then was flung.

And finally, because Cyberpitz is confused:

To get through the tunnels, you put a portal on the wall next to ya, then on one of those in the tunnel. Place yourself inside both portals, scoot forward on the tunnel-side, fire a new portal, move backwards and bam, safely inside tunnel. Rinse and repeat to progress

To get past the part you skipped...notice that the floor pannels are different colors...and that theres a big line of portal-able walls at your same height when looking at it. Like I said, I guarantee that the whole map is possible to do.

For the long jump at the end. I know about the method you used, which is why I said its impossible to get stuck in this map. I half-purposely left that in because its a way to realize what you're supposed to do without killing your self first.

I'm stuck at that spot, haha.

EDIT: OOOOOOOOOH, now I see. I got it :]

I uploaded the map to your website xennyth
Well, it's not my site, but thanks anyways :D

I just beat your map (without skipping anything) and I gotta say it was pretty fun. Also, the way that you have to beat the part that I got stuck on was pretty clever ;]

About to download. The map looks really dark compared to the official maps.

I'm going to add some misty particle effects after the official SDK releases. Its supposed to be in the lower parts of the lab where things are dirty and gooey.

Just beat it. Nice little map.

I liked the end with the hidden wall up top.

About the part that Steel.Inferno skipped, i did too. If i understood correctly, then there's a bug, it won't let me create a portal on that portal-able area.

ive got no idea what im supposed to do.

edit: aaaaaah i see what you have to do, ive seen it in a few trick videos. i dont like this 'glitch' in portal, and i wouldnt want to play too many maps with this kinda solution. that being said, very nice map, most professional one yet.

No bug, it's possible. I got past it properly.

i dont like this 'glitch' in portal...

I don't think it's a glitch because a lot of the challenges for gold medals (especially the timed ones) would be otherwise impossible if it weren't for the ability to do this.

tbh i dont think its a real glitch, but it does feel like cheating

Capturing game video has always pissed me off. I tried using the source capture method, but the audio refused to capture (even though it made a 30 meg .wav in the end). Still looks really jerky. Playing back demos looks terribly choppy, so fraps wouldn't have helped. Plus the 30 second limit in the trial would have sucked. Nothing went right when trying to capture a damn video. You can still get the general idea of how I get through it even though I die a couple times. The demo recording was being retarded so it captured me as being upside down at the end even though I wasn't.
