Rendering....

Ok, I'm not the best at rendering, but I want to know how to do it better, so it looks more detailed. Whenever I do render the model, it comes out in alot worse quality then what the model actually is. Can anyone help me here? Is there any tutorials on how to render better, and tips on the perspectives you should use, etc? If so, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Well the thing about rendering is its an art form. Tutorials might give you hints but past that its down to you, there's no magic button or anything (before anyone tells you to use global illumination thinking its a fix, cause it ain't) It just takes years of practice.

Good advice is pay attention to everything you see, take things apart in your mind and learn how it all fits together, learn to see things most people can't see, study how light falls on different materials, how surfaces appear. Things like that.

Though it never hurts to buy the professional books on the subject to help you along.

couldnt of said that better Fenric, :) but if you want some direction in obtaining some more detail out of an object, e.g a vehicle. you dont have to go mad on detailing the mesh, texturing techniques can make it look like it has 3 times the polygons the model actually has.

make detailed maps,

then learn how to bumpmap ,draw height maps, and displace accordingly. and you can have some great fun without even having to break your back putting together a ridiculously high poly model, even though sometimes high poly modelling can be fun :D

But when I do render, it appears almost chrome like. (I'm using 3DS Max 6) Even when I am modeling the object, it appears that way. Do I need to make the mesh darker? Or simply mess around with it? Also, I have a question. I want to make it so it appears as if it is laying down, like so:

How do I make it appear this way? Every angle doesn't look like that. Do I need to move the actual object? Or what?

Also, here is an example of what it looks like when I do render, it's not my model, but it appears close to the way it renders.

I didn't make it, I'm just wondering how you can make the render perspective like that. It's from the modification Ghost Ops, for Half-Life.

That looks like one of Ankalar's, is it? I dunno.

Activate the perspective viewport then you use the camera controls to whirl around the viewport and get it to the angle you want. But if you want to have the object resting on the floor for example, you need to create the floor (i.e. a plane primitive) then rotate the object so that it's resting correctly.

can you decide which account your using, you cant have/dont need two or more.

Thats directed at AirForce and Naxet btw.

And if I don't get a reply soon I'll be deleting one of the accounts at random :)

I'm glad you think I did that :farmer:

But no, that's Firegold and Lonewolf's for Ghost Ops.

I really only know basic rendering, but I think just the placing of lights and the angle really helps.

AirForce, As you've been online in one guise or another since I gave you a chance to decide which account to keep, and failed to respond, your other account has been banned. I will not participate in these games.

Ok then....I don't see a problem with two accounts and the reason for actually banning it but alright...

It's simply not allowed.

If people continue to PM you then bring them to the attention of staff, PM's don't give anyone the right to insult people. So if they keep doing it, let us know and we'll deal with it as attacking other users is frowned on and they will be spoken to.

I did, I PMed Munro, but never replied. I just got back from a trip as well.

Munro's the site owner and too busy to deal with things like this. Your best bet is a super moderator or one of the other admins.

Like me :)

I wrote a tutorial on rendering.... and munneh never put it online :/

anyay... you make it look like it's layoing down, put a plane primative behind it, then place a camera, and make a viewpoint be one of the cameras and rotate. Then place some lights (directionsal are good) and set them to cast shadows (play with the attenatuion and whatnot) and also play with the color.

color theroy helps.
