OK, so get this, my friends older system that I am working on starts acting wacky (note this happened well before I worked on it), boots occasionaly, and sometimes won't even go to the POST screen.

Note: Older system specs
AMD T-Bird 1Ghz <works
2 x 256MB PC 133 <don't know
ATI RADEON 9100 Xtasy <works
iWill KK266 plus <don't know

Now, when it boots, or the lack there-of, it gives me repeating long beeps.

So I go check the web, it says for a KK266plus, that repeating long beeps are a sign of a DRAM error. Not good. So I check it out, remove a stick, move them around (2x256MB) ya know, basic layer 1 trouble shooting. Still no effect, I even take the modules out and boot it, still no effect? I am unsure if it is supposed to even beep for a DRAM error if there are none present?

So, I am wondering if now the mobo is bad? Perhaps the DRAM error is caused by the mobo not even being able to pick them up in the first place? I would doubt that both sticks went bad? It would be more likely that the mobo went bad perhaps?

I really don't want to have to tell him that he now has to go spend $285 for a new CPU-MOBO-RAM combo to replace his older one...

However the newer one is nicer:
Asus A7V8X-X w/ AMD 2600+ 333FSB copper shim included
512MB DDR 400 RAM

If you guys know something bad about that Asus mobo, then please tell me...

It's a memory beep, meaning the memory is under too much stress, that it can't boot.

You have to reset the CMOS, so that the RAM settings will go back to default. Get your manual, look in the index for CMOS. Open your case and go to the jumper, and do what it says (Take the jumper off, put it on pin 2 and 3 for one minute, then put it back on pin 1 and 2.)

If you can't find the manual, it should be located close to the battery. Its a jumper.

Make sure all power to the comp is OFF.

BTW, that asus mobo is KT400. Kt400 chipsets arent exactly the best around, and are quite buggy. Try switching that to a A7N8X non deluxe.

Worked great :cheese:

Cool.... saved him some moonay.... lol

Also planning on swapping out power supply, not enough power, and possibly using some wire management techniques...

Thanks...

Wire management? What's that?! I just tuck all mine in underneath the optical drives :cheese:
