So I played Chrono Trigger a while back and I've been told it's the best RPG ever. I'm inclined to agree (it's awesome) but I haven't really played many others (or like...any at all probably). So I'm looking for some other good ones for my DS, I've heard about DragonQuest but does anyone else recommend that, and do I need to play the series in order?

Dragon Quest is good. I did get bored before the end, but what I played was decent (probably more a reflection of having played 100 similar style rpgs and being bored of the type rather than anything particular to do with Dragon Quest 9).

The Mario and Luigi RPGs are worth checking out, particularly Bowser's Inside Story.

Tales of Innocence
Mario & Luigi
Knights in the Nightmare

Hmm, haven't used my DS for ages(except that my mom plays Brain Training on it), should probably try and get into some RPG games.
Haven't played any of the ones mentioned in this thread, while RPGs are what handhelds are made for.

Chrono Trigger is available on the DS? Yet another reason for me to get a 3DS, I haven't played Chrono Trigger but heard it is the best JRPG out there.:)

The 3D-tastic version of Final Fantasy IV is just lovely, but I haven't stuck with any others for very long.

The Dragon Quest games are completely standalone. They're a bit different from most RPG's in that you have to go around levelling up - it won't be balanced to let you go through the story easily. I recommend DQ5.

The two Final Fantasy remakes are decent - III and IV.

The Pokemon games are good. They're essentially a rip of Dragon Quest.

Golden Sun will be out soon, but I've no idea how good it is.

Oh wait, I played Final Fantasy III through to completion. Antiquated, dry and forgettable.

Golden Sun: Dark Dawn.

Go ahead, do it. I loved the the original GS games and their lore/heavy dialogue (I don't even know why this is considered bad, 1. I don't see how immersion is going to be a huge huge factor in a handheld RPG, correct me if I'm wrong and 2. Dialogue advances the story so why not? I mean, unless you have a really short attention span or something). Also, the puzzle-solving in the originals were pretty good, along with the turn-based battle system. Not bad at all.

The Rune Factory games have a decent action RPG element to them, if you're into Harvest Moon at all. Latest one just came out, has a bunch of great additions and your dude can transform into a sheep. So, you know, instant appeal for me. :p

Since when is required grinding special, nes rpgs lived for it

If anyone wants a grind fest, try Final Fantasy 4 Heroes is it, old style mechanics with a new battle system that really does not let you break the game like other final fantasies since 7

Gonna have to check these out once school's out in a couple weeks.

FF 4 Heroes also does away with such niggling details as being able to specify which enemy to attack in combat. Pah! What a useless mechanic, like it was ever useful in A ****ING RPG WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU SQUARE ENIX AGH

Yeah, FF 4 Heroes is like a super casual/kids RPG.

15 item slots... Simplified equip system... Attacks choose an enemy automatically... You can't even control who gets a potion.

They did that in FF13 also, anyone wonder why I rarely buy jrpgs when that is keeping it fresh

They did? I was just watching my sister play that yesterday, and I was pretty sure I saw her selecting from a list of enemies each time.

to clarify, they took away selection of teammates attacks, you can control lead character but the rest do whatever

You can tell your teammates to attack your target though, so it's still a higher level of control than no selection at all, AI-driven or not.

they only attack who you attacked with the lead character, if you want to hit the behemoth but have that ****tard kid slow the rocket guy youre screwed, it also moves really damn fast

But im not defending 4 heroes, in fact i didnt play past the town getting petrified, too cutesy (even though i knew it would be) it just stopped my interest all jap games are like that, it does them a disservice
