Retail version - won't install

Says "setup has determined that you have directx 9.0b or greater installed on your machine and will not attempt to update it."

So I click next, and nothing happens. Fantastic. I've have steam and have the preload as I was undecided whether to buy direct or get the retail. I tried moving all the hl2 and cs:source-related gcf's in case that was confusing the installer.

I've also tried running the msi's direct, rather than setup.exe. I wanted to try installing to another folder other than prog files\steam, but it won't let me choose where to install it.

Anyone know the solution?

Seems to have installed ok now. Moved the steamapps folder, and then uninstalled steam. Ran the retail setup and it's happy as larry. Now that I've run thru the installer, and seen what it does at the end, I could probably have just activated the stuff I had already preloaded, using the cd-key from the retail box. Doh.

glad to hear your issue mayb e resolved. I have to wait a while for mine tho (I have the refereced memory crash and graphics corruption). Happy playing HL2 to you, and hopefully I can play too in about an hour.

I had the exact same problem, couldn't get past the DirectX screen until I had uninstalled my Steam (which I got before buying HL2 retail DVD).

as of choosing where to install it the only way to choose is to change the directory that steam is installed to

I have exactly that problem. i uninstalled steam, installed it through hl2 retail setup. but it won't change anything. i installed the catalyst 4.11 instead of 4.12beta, cause a buddy on irc told me it worked for him... nothing. anyone got further ideas? some valve officials mabye? at vu hotline they told me some bullshit, that i had to register online with vu and then i would be able to install. of course it didn't work... stupid dumbasses

Problem solved! Obviously i didn't have enough space on my hdd. setup didn't see the need to inform me about such an important fact... D'OH

Seems to be a lot of thouble with the setups on retail-buy. I hope you all fix it. This game's greatness know no limits.
