Return to the Moon by 2020

Perhaps I should have mentioned that it will cost an estimated 100 billion, is being endorsed by Bush, then posted this in the politics forum instead.

Woooooo, moonbase.

The question is: can the economy handle it, and wouldn't it be more sensible to properly put stuff in our own orbit first?

No! Moonbase! NOW!

Before the martians eat our brains. :x

Hmm, bit costly, but i gotta admit i like the idea.

"To the Moon, and beyond!"

I am sure bush will go "the moon belongs to america" or something like that or "this is the next step to win the war to terrorism"

Building Solar panels on the moon has to be one of the most retarded things I have ever heard, there is no way that it would be a net energy gainer.

Pff... everyone knows that the only reason the moon is there, is to house a laser cannon of some sort. Hence why the americans getting there first is always a great worry... this said, anyone else think it likely that the entire american Space programme could be orchestrated by NASA sending George Bush a Gundam Boxset.

"We could set about curing all the world's ills, curing third world debt and all the rest, but how will we ever challenge the Zeons unless we send our brave men and women into space to become Newtypes?"

Edit:

What America never told anyone is that having claimed the moon as their own, they found out that there was actually life up there. Fundamentalist moon people routinely drive C4 laden moon buggies into NASA checkpoints.

why...from the moon, we would be able to nuke everybody with ease. That is, moreso than before.

I think my country should set up a moon base before the Chinese beat us to it. Then we need to terraform Mars. Then expand outside the Solar system. Meet some aliens, kick their asses and take their land, rinse, repeat.

yaarr, space fascinates me, that it do mateys.

Studies have been done and its pretty obvious that it would work. Solar panels in space and on the moon can recieve far more energy than solar panels on Earth. I read that an estimated 5% of the Lunar surface covered with solar panels would be capable of beaming back enough energy to power all of todays daily energy needs.

A moonbase would be pretty pointless...except for low G experiments.

Bush "hello, nasa? I want you guys to begin work on a moonbase. Project should be finished by 2020"

NASA "I'm sorry Mr. President, but that's too broad a request. We'll need more information such as recreational and physical facilities, air pressure requirements, the average survival time with full food load for a human on the base, landing facility requir..."

Bush "NO! MOONBASE NOW! I WANT A MOONBASE!"

NASA "I'm sorry sir, but a moon BASE is just not possible. We might be able to create a sparsely livibal facility for 3 men, but a moonba..."

Bush "But, but, but I want a moon base :( WAAAHAHAHAH! WAHAHAHAH! I WANT MOONBASE! NOOOOO! I WANT MOONBASE!!!!!!!!!! WAHAAAHHAHAHA!!!"

NASA "OK OK OK! JUST SHUT THE **** UP PLEASE! We'll have a press release out by tommorow"

There's no way a moonbase will promote international harmony, at most it'll just end up starting a space arms race.
