In the January issue of PC Zone UK there is an interview with Marc Laidlaw with an interesting snippet of info:

there's a scientist you hear a lot in the test chamber in the early part of half-life, and he's never reappeared. And we've finally worked out a place for him and where he's been all this time!

I know the has been a lot of discussion about another black mesa employee reappearing, but this is the first time I have seen anything concrete as to who it might be.

"we made it calhoun. we actually made it."

There were I believe two scientists jabbering away in the Test Chamber, so I wonder which one it was, and how Valve are going to communicate that it was him considering that all the BM scis sound the same and even the link between Eli and Mr "all our phones are out and i'm afraid to move him" wasn't obvious beyond a single line of dialogue.

Uhh...I'm not sure how they'll fit in one of those guys, considering the anti-mass spectrometer shot a giant laser at them and blew them all up...

I don't recall there being bodies when you walked back in.

Im betting my money on it being that Einstein scientist dude.

Dead bald sciencist with glasses can be found in control room, dead black sciencist is in next room. My on white slick man.

"Shutting down...Attempting shutdown...it's not shutting down!!! It's not...AAAARGH!!!!!" :p

The standard procedure guy, it'll be him. He was a jerk.
Rosenburg pwns any random scientist guy.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Anyway if its one of the scientist who set the machine srongly, ill crowbar him.

So it probably is one of those for scientists talking to you in the control room? The voice you hear the most in the Test Chamber is that bald guy with glasses right? But thats the old model of Kleiner if I recall right. Otherwise it must be the Einstein-looking scientist, cause he says a couple of lines to

They're waiting for you Gordon... in the tessssssst chamber...

oooo that sounds cool, wonder what he'll have to say! :E

Cool , so is that 2 new characters known to date? I wonder if they were able to get Robin Williams to give his voice this time around.

And oh , don't scan the article.

I'm more interested in this
And we've finally worked out a place for him and where he's been all this time!
then who it actually is.

I really, really hope so. Or Jeff Goldblum! :E

That makes three new characters. Two old guys in the woods and new scientist.

I wanted Rosenburg :( but I'm sure this will still work anyway.

"They're waiting for you Gordon, in the satiliiiiiiiiite chamberrrrrr"
IIRC a fork of lightning shoots into the control room during the RC. I though everyone there died. :/

And Samon, I wanted Rosenburg because he's someone we know and it's a link between HL2 and the expansions. Also, Barney had no personality, in HL1 (random barneys) or BS (Calhoun) as did Eli (black scientist in Analomous Materials and Unforseen Conciquences) but they gave them one in HL2. Rosenburg has a few advantages over a random scientist: he is known and liked (by some anyway) by the fan community, he has an explenation for getting out, he would have a reason to know Barney more than random scientist #342 would and it would make at least BS and Decay cannon.

Why do we need a link to the expansions? Besides, the reason it isn't Rosenburg is because he doesn't serve a purpose in the on going story. He was a Gearbox creation and he isn't part of what's going on. It isn't about because he knows who Barney is, or because he's familiar with the characters - it's because he is important to the story.

Rosenburg isn't and he couldn't have filled the shoes of this new character. Rosenburg wouldn't bring much to the story, and he doesn't serve the purpose Test chamber Tom does. The latter factors into understanding exactly what went on in HL1, and alot of that will be revealed in Episode 2.

Just because a lightning bolt hit the room doesn't mean they all died. Maybe just the people at the control consoles died. Maybe one left the room when Gordon left for the test chamber. Maybe one ran from the room once he saw the first effects of the crystals insertion.

I think it's going to be one of the scientist that open the door for you to go into the chamber. The younger looking one, mentioned that although slim, a resonance cascade was a possible outcome. Seems to be the biggest link between any of the scientists in that scene to the current story.

We all already know you play the Gman. The guy in the video has some grey hairs, and is a man. Get it? Grey haired man.

It's so obvious.

this makes no sense. why are they bringing in some scientist that you never really cared about and presumed dead? some nobody scientist in the test chamber? why would valve be trying to even work out a place for some nobody that wasnt important?

The wheelchair dude was cool.
A HA! you have just sparked my last 2 brain cells into a sexy dance, my green brother. think about it, as gina and collete in decay, you were under the test chamber really, so technically you were in it. when you were under the test chamber you heard the wheelchair dude on the intercom. BAM!

sorry for doublepost.

I'm all for more random scientists. Infact the secret rebel scientist labs should be filled with old Black Mesa Scientists.

"Gordon. Hey, It's me the guy running from that zombie in the office complex."

"Gordon, good to see you. Remember that time I didn't want to go to the surface. Boy were those good times or what."

"Hey Gordon, its me, the guy who opened that door....with the thing.....and I mentioned chaos theory. Cra-zy times."

I can't wait. :)

Well before HL2, did any of the scientists (or even Breen) have a name, backstory/developed character? It's been a while since I played HL but I can't recall ever hearing another character address any of the scientists as Dr. Vance, Dr. Kleiner or Dr. Breen.

Because there are a lot of important people at Black Mesa. Half-Life 1 focused on introducing the storyline, and didn't show a lot of unique characters, with the exception being The G-Man. The rest of the Half-Life series have a chance to expand on the old characters that we know of and introduce new ones that we never had identified to us in the previous games, like Breen.

The G-Man was the only truly unique character in Half-Life 1. Kleiner was also mentioned, in the manual, but never made an appearance that we know of.
