Returning character revealed

Back then we thought the G-Man was Admin. Ahhhhhhh the memories.
Still, past experiance tells me not to trust PC Gamer.

Just because a lightning bolt hit the room doesn't mean they all died. Maybe just the people at the control consoles died. Maybe one left the room when Gordon left for the test chamber. Maybe one ran from the room once he saw the first effects of the crystals insertion.
Or maybe more likely is that they were teleported too?

Mabye they will come up with some crazy explanation and character. Perhaps a second scientist in a hazmat suit somehow got teleported into Zen during the cascade, and through some random series of events managed to get back... but that's just stupid.

"I survived for 2 DECADES by eating houndeye meat. when some wierd guys in suits started changing them into hunter synths I knew I had to get back."

*everyone stares at scientist*

"what?"

*gets shot*

Well before HL2, did any of the scientists (or even Breen) have a name, backstory/developed character? It's been a while since I played HL but I can't recall ever hearing another character address any of the scientists as Dr. Vance, Dr. Kleiner or Dr. Breen.
Smithers :D (Blast Pit)

How wrong you are.

It isn't Rosenburg, it isn't anyone else and it is a character from HL1 - that character being someone from the Test Chamber sequence. Ain't no mistake in it.
And he's not important in the same way that black guy who told you to get to the surface and opened a door for you wasn't important...until HL2.

wonderful, simply wonderful. Must replay test chamber!

Heh, at first ih HL2 I thought it was silly that they gave random scientists, which you saw multiple times through your adventure, a significant role in the game. But then, I realized I liked the references to the black mesa incident and it helped tie it all together. I'm sure this will be the same. I have no idea who rosenberg is though. He's from blue shift? I'll have to give that game a try, just need to DL it.

Eli is the only random scientist that got upgraded. Kleiner is mentioned in the HL1 manual; he's your old professor and Breen was the infamous 'Administrator'. Mossman just came out of nowhere. Rosenburg is a character in Blue Shift and in the PS2 only Decay.

Wow, this is great news! Actually, I am interested to see the tie-in between this scientist and the overall story. How he escaped, and what he has been up to for the past two decades should also be interesting.

And for those who keep saying Test Chamber Guy isn't important, and they could've picked Rosenburg instead, how about we wait until we play Episode 2before we make any unfounded judgements, eh? Besides, there is much more potential for this new character, than stale ol' Rosenburg. But for some reason I took a liking to Rosenburg, am not exactly sure why. That doesn't stop me from realizing that he really isn't important to the story and we should let the LEAD writer decide who and who is not pertinent to the story.

Also, I would rather have a new wrinkle in the HL story, than have the same-old recycled Rosenburg.

Smithers (Blast Pit)
Where at? I must've missed it, I went back and ran through there again. There are what 3 scientists that you talk to?

I couldn't stand Rosenburg. I don't know if they messed up the AI for him, but for some reason he was by far the hardest one to keep with you. I kept having to backtrack constantly to get him going again. I don't miss him at all. :D

breen? He was mentiond early on. He's the only one who I can think of who had a proper title in early HL. Mabey he didn't die and he's being held hostage by the resistance. The vortigaunts probably saved his ass when he was about to die so he can be used against the combine.

One of the scientists (who has no offical name but who I like to call Mr. Burns) tells you that Smithers went down to turn on the reactor but never came back up. Smithers is the scientist you kill by turning on the generator. Funnily enough, the first thing 'Burns' says when you get back to him is "Excelent".

It was probably just bad level design.

No, it isn't Breen. It's a new character.

I'd rather have more new characters like the two old guys you meet in the woods and blah blah blah.

No, he doesn't. Rosenburg is a plank. He's dull, he's uninteresting and he had zero personality. It is exactly like picking a random scientist guy.

And yet Valve continues to make games with Gordon Freeman as the main character...hmm...

Of course he had zero personality. He was in a mediocore, 30 minute expansion pak. Kleiner was rarely mentioned in Half-Life and you didn't even know it was Doctor Vance in the beginning until he tells you in Half-Life 2. Valve know how to make good NPCs, they could easily flesh him out. It's not like there was much anyone else they could pick through.

Or absolutely anyone for that matter, so why not start with a character we know absolute zero about, who doesn't require a specific voice over and appeared in a game that 99% of people playing the game will have seen, instead of someone with a (mediocre) voice associated with him who appeared in two expansions that many people playing HL2: EP2 won't have played.

Im betting my money on it being that Einstein scientist dude.
Nah, they guy in the Portal trailer has dark hair and looks younger.
To be honest, I don't see why it should be that scientist from Anomolous Materials. How is the fact that you never see him (or his corpse) again evidence?
Hell, I'd put money on the protagonist of Portal NOT being that scientist.

I'd quite like it if the guy was Lazlo :)

I think i need to clear up some confusion.

Portal will introduce a new character that is a WOMEN which will appear in the later Episodes (Episode 3 etc)

The knew Episode 2 character is the survivor of Black Mesa. Another character completely.

They could easily flesh him out, but they have reason to at all. Kupoartist summed it up nicely.

It doesn't matter either way if they decide to use Rosenburg or someone entirely new! Why would it even matter?

I was about to throw a "NO U" at ya to seal the argument in my favor, but I'll play bigger man.

So you still mention it, but pretend you didn't?

Has that actually been specified? You could be playing as a female character from Black Mesa...

Hust struck me now on an IM convo... (I respect my interlocutor's privacy)

What if the character in question is the scientist who talked to G-Man?

I was asking whether it'd been confirmed that you wouldn't be playing as the returning character.

The new character in portal is female and thats all we know about this person.

The knew character in Ep2 is from black mesa and thats all we know.

They are two completly different people.

Because it would be a nice thing for the people who have played the 2 expansions and it might get people who haven't played them to play them to find out more about the character's background.

I really don't care who it is as long as it's a new character. The backbone of any good story is character, so, bring 'em on, I say.

EDIT: This is offtopic, but it's been discussed earlier in the thread. Seeing as how the main character from Portal is female, I wonder if it will be Gina or Collet from Decay. That would be interesting.

Ah, you are correct. I went back to that guy, usually I never hung around him long enough. Smithers could come back as a supernatural being, that shoots lightning bolts out of his hands. :O
