Revolution controller. Pretty much the most official news we have.

This has been mooted as the next Nintendo controller. I'm sorry that I have no source for this news, but it does have some serious back up. Look at the video for hints towards Nintendo and for a better idea as to how it works.

As for my views?
If they make the entire system smaller, it could be one of the most revolutionary things ever. If it stays a similar size, I'm not really sure how it will be recieved. But Nintendo have kept true to their promise, something that will be desired by people with rival consoles. I know I'm excited, if a little mixed about how successful it will be. Judging by the success of the DS, I would say it will be pretty amazing.

What do you think?

I watched the video but I still don't get it.

The dude keeps saying things like "I can feel the ball go into the air," or "I can feel the weight of the driver."

What does he mean? I guess it's kinda impossible to describe without actually using the device.

The way I see it, it's like a touch screen with force feedback and all that 3D motion. The more I think about it, the more logical it seems. How can you step up from a joy-stick by any other way?

The pen thing has been used for 3D modelling and digital painting for a few years now. I can't really make out the picture on the site though. It looks a lot different than the one in the demonstration.

I hope Nintendo does end up using this technology. It does seem pretty revolutionary just as the consoles name implies. Very interesting! Nice find dude!

"You have to use your hands?! Thats a baby's toy!"

But seriously, I remember seeing this, oh 10 years ago, on tomorrows world.

I really think that controllers that utilise your senses as opposed to reaction button pushing are essential to developing gaming.

I would be VERY surprised if this technology didn't make it's way to the PC market.

It seems pretty cool, but how useful would it be for an FPS or platformers? I guess not very.

ah cool nice find. hope they do something like this along with that VR video someone posted a while back

As I said i my original post, I imagine they will alter the hardware, I'd be surprised if the thing doesn't act as a joystick too with buttons in various other comfortable places.
While Nintendo haven't always been the best for looks, they have always been top of the comfort scale in my opinion.

if this comes out to be true I'm buying the Xenon and the Revolution

I don't understand what this has to do with Nintendo. He never mentioned them or hinted to them that I could tell.

No, he never specifically mentioned it. But Nintendo Official Magaizne apparently gave the site address because they saw an official from both companies meet.

And also, in the video he mentions video games a fair bit and also that some big name companies have shown interest.

I really need to use it for myself to judge it...

If that would get into the Revolution, I would be impressed :)

I'm pretty sure the most official news we have is the article in GameInformer saying that the Revolution would have a touchscreen controller...

It's a 3D force feedback device (pen, club, weapon grip, etc.) that reacts realistically to "surfaces" in the computer. The programmers would have to include a lot more detail in their worlds. Bump maps would have to actually be bumpy, water, sludge, alien skin would have to have another variable or series of variables assigned to them to describe their, what, viscosity? In a FPS, the most it might be used for (pardon the limited imagination at this point) would be basically force feedback of the gun you were holding. Unless you put the gun down and could reach out and "touch" things in the world, this won't do too much to add to FPS games as they exist today.

Now this is something that I can get excited about. Of course, if Nintendo would include this with their system, they would need to have some way to use a traditional controller as well because the Revolution will be able to play GCN games. It will be really interesting to see what Nintendo has in store for us in a month from now.

In an FPS game, coupled with better physics, anything could be used as a weapon: knives, pots, spears...

Yeah, that'd be pretty wild. Maybe now instead of just walking up to an object and hitting our use key we'll have to grab it and either put it into some sort of inventory or just move things to get the actual items. I don't know, seems like it could definitely work well.

Hmmm.... looks a bit shit to me lol. I mean... its intresting but in terms of games I can't see it fitting into the a game.

WTF i aint sticking shit in my spine for a nintendo

:|

On the loging screen it said "*copyright*2000" This is 5 years old.

I hope it's implemented in the Revolution. Assuming this is true, you have to love Nintendo for actually trying something new. I personally am getting sick of the same game genres playing the same way generation after genreation. Oh look the graphics are slightly better than last year's version, yay. We've been using the same controllers for over a decade now. New buttons have been added in that time, but playability hasn't really changed. I know I'm getting sick of the tried and true formula and I'm sick of companies sticking to what works. Thank god for Nintendo and their willingness to try new directions.

Here is a Revolution speculation article. Nothing new or exciting though.

I just thought of a kick-ass use for this technology other than the device they were showing off. Imagine a controller with an LCD screen covering the front of it. Now, picture two of these devices mounted on it but instead of a pen you stick your thumbs in it. With that setup you could have any button layout you want. You could simulate something that takes the place of an analog stick even with vertical movement, too. You could simulate analog or digital buttons. You could simulate switches. You could simulate sliders. You could simulate twist knobs. You could have the layout of the controller change dynamically. All of the imaginary buttons could have their own individual force feedback. Wow, I can't wait for that stuff to become mainstream entertainment technology. If you mounted gloves on something like that (and had each finger simulated) instead of a pen and combined it with a VR system the possibilities would be endless.

If Nintendo are able to make this technology small enough (perhaps even use it to fit into the analogue control stick?) then they could have a serious advantage over the competition. This kind of stuff is really damn cool - it's not gimmicky, and it could have serious gameplay implications. Imagine playing Splinter Cell and actually being able to pick locks based on feel alone.

I think that is the only way they can do it.... in the analogue stick. I can't see having a normal controller with a huge mechanical arm coming out of it....

No more killing the scientists in Half-Life... The big mechanical arm comes out and slaps you.
