Rigging in MAX

In gmax you easily assing vertices to bones, but when I try to do that in 3d max, it doesnt work. I really hate working with envelopes. There is a place where you can set "Select:vertices" but havent really figured out how that really works. I would be really grateful if somebody could write few lines to clear that out for me,

Also,is it possible to convert biped found in MAX (cs) to bones?
I remember that I read somewhere that it is,but I cant find that anymore..

in max 5 there is a tutorial on rigging help > tutorials

im working on it now so i dont really know much about it but its there... might tell you what you need to know
 
ok in the skin modifier:

Click 'Edit Envelopes'
Select the bone to work with.
In the sub menu box 'select' check 'Vertices'
In the sub menu box 'Envelope properties' click the button with the 'A' on it.
Now select any verts you want to assign a weight to and type the weight in the 'Abs. Effect' box in the 'Weight Properties' sub menu. 1 is maximum strength, 0 is now no strength.

play around with it.
