I'm one of those folks that just. Don't. Like. Steam at all very that much. Probably the latest example of stupidity presented here in this thread.

I'm going to ask alot of questions, I'm going to say alot of stuff. Some of which have already been answered, or dissagreeable. This is my first thread here at the HalfLife2 dot net forums, so bear with me.

My beef with steam is that. The avaliability of the games to the retail is GREATLY limited compared to the retail avaliable for purchase on steam. I'm alright for paying a little more for DOD source, Half Life source, as well as all of steams back catalogue in the silver package.

Just for those of us (including myself) that wish to purchase retail, and prefer to not send our money over the internet, cannot benefit from any of these other games avaliable for a couple extra bucks online. This beef itself is not directly related to Half-Life 2 itself but the "Steam bought only" addons such as DOD:Source, and HL:Source. I would LOVE to play day of defeat source, great game by itself and I think that it would be great to see it ported to the new engine. But I don't trust paying for things over the internet, I want the real thing, the CD in my hands and a nice little box to display on my bookshelf. Unless the games would come free with the Half-Life 2 I'm planning to purchase from my local EB Games with the cash I've been saving up, I'd be happy. Or for at least put them in the store where I can buy them as addons! Come ON steam. Don't force me to do something I've avoided doing for a LONG Time. Don't make me buy from your system. Please allow me to pop in the CD and let me install from there, and to not magically appear after I enter in my Credit Card Number. If somone can vertify wether or not people who do not want to purchase Half Life 2 online, can still get the other 2 games?

This. Sucks.

*edit* for those that want me to get the collectors edition I dont have a DVD player nor do i plan to pay 100 dollars to get one.

Buy the CE edition from the shops then. No one is forcing you to buy it online. I am going to buy retail too, even tho I like steam I want something I would prefer to buy a physical copy.

Edit, didnt see your edit oO sorry.

You can get a DVD player for your pc for under £20, hell even a decent DVD writer for £50. You're probably going to have to buy one sooner or later, more and more games will be released on DVD.

Hmm 20 there is how many here (CANADA)

I understand that no one is forcing me.
But i'm just wondering if you can get dod source or half life source without CE.

From what I've experienced before with steam is if you had Half-Life (which means you bought it, etc.) and you install it and login to your steam account you can say, "Register a product I already own." You are then able to show steam where your Half-Life directory is and it gives you a list of mods you wish to download that you now have access to since you own Half-Life. Now that might also be the case with Half-Life 2 - you might be able to get the retail version where after you have Half-Life 2 you are then able to download all corresponding mods. Not sure if they will do it like this or not but thats what I'm pulling for.

I hope so too.
Yeah, the thing is.

DOD source + HL source in the SILVER package

is about 10 bucks more than the BRONZE package

So if it's more expensive i'm thinking its gonna cost more money to play those games.

That is true but those are steam packages. I'm not totally sure how the retail packages are going to work becuase no one has really posted price tags on those things and the second retail came with all of whats in the silver except for DOD:Source - So maybe you will just be able to download it as an add-on from this retail version? I don't know... Valve is just confusing everyone with these packages and all I see right now is them trying to cash in big time! Just look at the packages they offer on steam right NOW - do all of those profits go straight to valve? I bet they do and that means they are spending a considerable amount less to distribute this game through steam, and are they giving us any kind of price break? You bet not! They are just cashing in. Greed - a wonderful thing is it not? Before we know it steam is going to have a monthly fee to play your games online

God don't jinx it lol.
It already has the term "subscription" on it.

I just buy the games through steam, to support Valve and Valve alone. Then I just burn the .gcf-files on a dual-layer DVD. I might just make a drawing of Gordon Freeman saying "lol" or something lame like that, and pretend it's the HL2 copy from the shops :) I know.. I am a genious..

ALl except for the fact that Dual Layer DVD disks are like really friggin expensive! seriously, $40 for a 3-pack. Thats only like 25.5 gb. I can go buy a 160gb hard drive for 60 bucks at compusa! After the mail in rebate of course but I've never sent in a mail in rebate where they didn't give me money back

You could just divide the gcf's and burn them on 2 regular dvd's though :P

Nah, gcf files are bull. If i wanted it that way I could have just gotten em from my friend. I'm supporting Valve either way. Steam is a crack full of shit. That stupid friends thing dont work as well as the new interface, the console is a joke, and well, i just. don't. like. it.

*Edit* thank you for your input though. I just don't trust valve with my credit card number, I don't trust anyone online for that matter.
