Risk aversion

It's not necessarily a case of them being morons, slowing the traffic down below that which is necessary lulls people into a false sense of security and is tiring. I can absolutely guarantee that if this ridiculous London-wide 20mph limit comes into force, accidents will go through the roof and a lot more pedestrians (who are also lulled into a false sense of security by the slow traffic) will be killed too.

True, but not completely. What you're talking about there is not entirely a speed limit issue, it also involves common sense, and responsible driving. Anyway, 20mph is ridiculously slow for most big streets and should apply only to smaller ones in residential areas, school zones, hospitals and the like. Honestly hope it doesn't come into force.

I don't see how that's possible. Less than 5% of accidents here are attributed even in part to either excessive speed or exceeding the speed limit, an insignificant percentage. The vast majority of accidents are caused by inattention or unlicensed/uninsured/drunk drivers.

Let me remind you that local conditions and driving behavior of your area are not the same all around the world. Unlicensed/uninsured/drunk/skilled/"look how powerful my engine is"/unskilled but cool-wannabe drivers, you name it, here most of the people like to drive fast regardless of weather, road conditions, etc. That's why the percentage of accidents related to high speed is so high.

The other problem here is that the zealous obsession with speed enforcement and constant "speed kills" propaganda has convinced many people that their only responsibility when driving is to obey the speed limit. So long as they don't exceed that magical number, they're a safe driver.

Then again, it's a matter of driving education and a little misinformation on the traffic department. True, slow speed doesn't guarantee safe driving but the law enforcement agencies don't wanna make the needed efforts to really be sure that everyone driving an automotive vehicle know what's he/she's doing. But You can't really blame it all on low speed limits.

A friend of mine got hit by a car that pulled out on him, he was doing something like 35-40 when the woman pulled out and she tried to blame the accident on him because "he was speeding". Right, so that excuses your reckless negligence and inability to look before moving out?
It's Driving 4 Dummies. Personally I find a lot more people pull out on me when I'm doing 30 than when I'm doing 40.

No, it doesn't excuse the dumb woman. It seems that she was doing what almost everybody else would have done: blame others. Since speeding is always pictured as the bad guy it must have been the first thing that crossed her mind in order to appear as the victim.

We live in an overly regulated world of abundance, where you can have pretty much all your basic needs more than taken care of. People aren't accustomed to having to really work for anything maybe? Sheltered?

Once again, it doesn't apply to all the world. In some places people have to struggle hard to get the most necessary stuff to survive. In those cases the risk aversion comes from fear of losing what they got after so much effort.

Perhaps people no longer appreciate their freedoms because essentially they've already given them up by choosing to lead an unremarkable life of servitude and material comfort.

Well, you have to pay for everything in a capitalist society, right? Most people are willing to sacrifice their freedom in exchange of being pampered and having their material needs (and more) taken care of.

Ah yeah. Do you think that accounts for the cultural shift though?

Yup, habits can influence culture if they are wide-spread.

Your identity used to be defined by what you produced, but now it's about what you consume. Twisted.

That's also part of capitalism effect on society. It gives that idea that since you are productive enough to get all the "cool" stuff in the market you also deserve a higher status as a powerful individual. Of course, it doesn't consider the means used to get the money used to buy those things :rolling:

This is a massive problem here. Kids are taught right from childhood that the only acceptable employment is a safe job in a big company. If you study hard, who knows, you could even become Vice President of a company!

The importance of ideas and originality has been completely undermined, and the entrepreneurial spirit is dismissed as craziness/lack of understanding of the risks.

Knowledge for the sake of knowledge is dead. The age when people weren't afraid to do something on their own is dead.
I hate all this. :(
Some of revip's examples I can't fully sympathise with because they're not relevant to me, or because I don't agree with the degree of importance he attaches to them, but this point I agree with wholeheartedly. No one wants to be a cog in the machine any more - they only want to be oil for the machine. People aspire to becoming society's lube.

I think this is a symptom of the natural development of civilisation. If you are born into a society where millions of people have already come before you and lived out their lives in a certain way or ways, you will predictably be faced with a situation where you will be expected to live your life in a similar manner to most of those people - or to those who were most commonly perceived as successful, at least. It will be a life template that not only draws its boundaries at the areas where your predecessors never trod, but one that also has all the exciting, experimental and reckless protuberances, that those forerunners traced out, trimmed off.

The bits that get trimmed off will be the risky bits, the confusing bits, the controversial bits, and so forth... There might be the impression of endless opportunity facing you at the beginning, but in real terms social mobility is at a standstill, let's face it, and as a result we all feel the call of the multitudes of blue-collar souls that have gone before, ushering us into a funnel that empties out into a jar labelled 'SAFE SECURE SUCCESSFUL': an unexciting job, in a big company. You want to be 'passionate' about what you do?! What are you, a fag?? This is the REAL WORLD, son!

Of course you can try and pursue something quirky and unconventional, just because you love it, if you want... just as long as you make sure you put in the requisite hard labour getting 'qualified'. Which means you need to go and get dried out and shrivelled on the griddle of Academia. Ah, university! Where pompous dilettantes encourage their students to regurgitate the contents of all their lectures back at them, cross-reference it all and call it 'original research'; where your eventual success is determined by how well you can gauge your lecturers' personalities, in order to impress them and subvert their opinion as little as possible. If you can get your invisible masters to eventually tick the box marked 'All hoops cleared' (subtext: 'Mr. Employer, I'm afraid you can't get away with paying this person the same wage as everyone else'), then you're sorted and off you can go to pursue whatever you're passionate about!

What's that you say? 'I DON'T FEEL ANYTHING ANY MORE'?!? Nonsense!! Chop-chop, I spy a telesales job with your name on it!

/rant

Um. But yeah. All that is slightly tangential to the OP. There is a trend in society towards the belief that safety is not only good, it is PARAMOUNT. This attitude applies equally to the safety you gamble when you pursue an unconventional life path. It's also the central foundation of all the anti-terror rhetoric that has been used to undermine our civil liberties recently. Safety is not paramount, however. If it was, we may as well all be living in steel coffins with viewscreens, being fed by intravenous drip. Nothing could harm us then, except... except, deep vein thrombosis! :O Think of the lawsuits!! oh shi

I agree with this philosophy %100. Nobody wants to take risks anymore for any reason if it's going to cost them money it seems. Nobody wants to even try if there's no money involved. Money is the great motivator nowadays for most people. Not science or art. It's a real pity too imo. The days 99.vikram was talking about has long passed since the great renaissance. :p

Lame-O, for a cock you're pretty funny on occasion

I didnt find it amusing. I was more like "wtf... why u do dis?"

People are averted to risk because by its definition risk has the very real potential to end up badly.

Risk aversion is the most human of natures, its part of what kept your ancestors alive long enough to spawn you and your eventually god awful boring rants on the state of society, as if your opinion somehow = fact.

Thread over, TBH.
