M-TRAN (Modular TRANsformer) is a self-reconfigurable modular robot with following features.

1. It can make and change 3-dimensional structure by itself
2. Whole body motions, eg. locomotion, are possible

The simple design of the module and nice design of the connection mechanism enabled it to satisfy both the above requirements.

Self-reconfigurable modular robot can change its shape by itself. So, it can adapt its shape and functions to its enviroment. This is called self-reconfiguration or self-assembly.

If all the modules are the same, it can repair by itself by cutting of its damaged modules and replacing by spair modules. This ability is called self-repair.

Pretty damn cool.
