HANOI (Reuters) - Charges of child abuse will be filed against rocker Gary Glitter in a Vietnamese court on Friday, a provincial official said.
"We have enough evidence now to prosecute Gary for child abuse," said the official from the southern Ba Ria Vung Tau province, who declined to be identified.
Police had been authorised to detain Glitter, 61, for four months in the southern resort town
of Vung Tau before his trial, the official said on Thursday.
Glitter, whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, has denied allegations he molested girls as young as 12. He has said he was just helping girls with their English.
The age of consent in Vietnam is 16 and sex with minors is punishable by up to 12 years in jail. Sex with a child younger then 16 years old with or without the child's consent in Vietnam is considered child rape.
Glitter's lawyer, Le Thanh Kinh, who told the Thanh Nien newspaper that he would seek bail for his client, was not available for comment.
Glitter told his lawyer the jail conditions were acceptable and he was allowed to keep 1.4 million dong (about 52.2 pounds) to buy extra food, the newspaper said.
Authorities have not given details about their investigation, but state-owned newspapers said this week police had identified 10 girls who admitted to having had sex with Glitter. One of the girls was 12 years old.
Glitter was sentenced to four months in jail in Britain in 1999 after being found guilty of storing more than 4,000 images of child pornography on the hard drive of his computer.
After his release, he left Britain for Cuba and then later turned up in Phnom Penh.
Child rights activists hounded him out of Cambodia twice and had his name put on an entry blacklist, although Glitter filed lawsuits last year fighting the deportation orders.
Vietnamese newspapers have reported Glitter had been in Vietnam for about a year.
12 years in jail! oh, please. Trainee solder firing squad!!!
