I have a D-Link DI-614+ Revision B, and I'm using it by wire connection not wireless. Anyways, I have 2 computers connected to it mine and my bros now everytime my bro plays some game it makes me lag if i play cs:S while hes playign something else. The same thing happens when im playing a game it makes him lag. Whats the problem here?

Thanks.

What kind of internet connection do you have? DSL?

I have cable.
That's why. Cable technology is a shared bandwidth and can be drained by too many users using too much throughput, even if it is just you and your brother. You both aren't running a server at the same time by any chance, are you? That causes congestion on the network and slows the connection speed. That's cable for ya!

Hold on now. Having not enough bandwidth on your line is not a Cable issue. It's a ISP issue in general which could be for DSL or Cable. If you don't have a fast enough connection to support the packets going out or in then you are choking your connection, whatever it may be. Actually in my area this is more common among DSL connections because the only cable connection here is 3Mbps instead of 512Kbps like some cheaper DSL lines.

Now if you live in an area that is congested and is not organized by your ISP very well then you may run into issues where slow down occurs because cable is a shared line. In my area our Cable company has lots of bandwidth to dish out even though we are all houses out here. ;)

Considering that it happens when you both get on and when only one is on it doesn't, I'd say it's the first and not the second issue...or something on your Local network. Did you have a router before this one? Do you know your connection speed? Download/Upload.

Like mine is 3mbps (mega bits per second) download speed and 512kbps uploading.

Whoa. sharing an internet connection... I'd just assumed that if you were gaming nobody else could use it at the same time... are you saying that's a config problem if it hoses your connection?

Ok, back in the day I played CS. I'd be pinging between 60 and 120, and the then it would jump to 200-300, w/ bad lag, presumably because the other computer was loading a page or whatever. If it was doing mplayer games it'd be constantly hosed.

Now, it was 256/256 then. compared to 1.5/864 now (haven't tried mplayer FPS lately), but isn't this normal behavior? Neither game was using near 128 bandwidth, I'm sure.

BTW, this is DSL running through a speedstram router.

My ping is fine even when both my parents are on their PCs surfin the web. With them not on I get between 30-60 latency. When they are both on, I get 70-120. That's 3 PCs, I don't know what your prob could be....o yea, im introducing a fourth soon since I'll be using my new desktop and not my laptop anymore.
