BACKGROUND STORY

The story of the historic city of Abalos begins in the early years of the 21st century. The world into which this city state would eventually be born was embroiled in great conflict and turmoil. The wealthier nations of the world were engaged in a protracted war against countries who very often tended to be amongst the poorer countries.

This multi-national war dragged on for several years until popular domestic opposition in the West led to a gradual winding down of military operations in all but the most volatile regions. Almost every country in the world, both West and East, had seen on its own soil the ravages of war.

It was not just the returning soldiers who were gaunt and weary of struggle and bloodshed; the very people they return to shared their fatigue and deep dissatisfaction. From this war weariness, a new era of international politics emerged. In a similar fashion to how the First World War spawned the dictatorship and hyper-nationalism, this latest war resulted in the exact opposite.

Across Europe and the Middle East a new political trend of Co-operationism took hold. Soon, much of the world was working together to eradicate poverty, corruption and disease. Poorer nations began to flourish in economic and social success. The 3rd world seemed poised to sink into the annals of history. There was a real feeling of brotherhood amongst all the peoples of the world, which prompted hypothetical discussions in the eschelons of intellectual think-tanks to create some sort of symbolic, enduring monument to mankind's triumph over it's own petty weaknesses.

Discussions gave rise to the concept of a "living monument"; a microcosm of the world stage with people of all nationalities and backgrounds living and working together literally side by side. The idea of such a "citystate" filtered down to the people and found popular support. The world's top architects, city planners, construction firms all jockeyed to be involved in this unprecedented endeavour.

International councils of various professional social bodies met to discuss the pragmatics of the creation of a citystate. It was decided that to ensure the independence of the citystate, it would be built either on an existing island or on land reclaimed specifically for this purpose. Eventually, Cape Verde was nominated almost unanimously due to it's peaceful history, temperate weather conditions and proximity to the newly prosperous Africa. Rather than repeat the blunders of the creation of Israel by founding the citystate on one of the existing islands, a new island was created. This would become Abalos.

After the initial building work was completed and the island was habitable, the island was populated via a dual system of international lottery and merit system. Individuals acknowledged as making an outstanding contribution to their communities or industries were offered a passport for themselves and their families. In the same way, passports were also assigned via a lottery system working on social security or employment numbers. Care was taken to avoid awarding passports to individuals or groups with criminal histories.

An interim government was setup for the settling-in period, but was quickly replaced in elections by massive support for the Democratic Socialist party.

Both in Abalos and abroad, the world is now calm. The growing peacefulness has resulted in changes across the globe, most notably massive downscaling of military forces and an associated disarming. The economy is stable and equality is now a reality.

World Peace has finally been achieved, and the city of Abalos is a testament to this.
