If i am looking for a good 1rst person shooter(that is not hl2) what game should i look at?

any hl mod.

alternatively, far cry is good, and so is Deus Ex (NOT the second one!).

Definately Far Cry.

Then there's UT2k4, worth getting just for Red Orchestra.

oh yeah, that too.

Also, Unreal Tournament (the original).

if you're in for classics, try digging up dark forces

I loved that game. My parents made me stop playing it after Columbine, though, because I was like 9 years old.

Battlefield 1942 is a great buy, plus you can play Desert Combat.

I can't wait till battlefield 2 as well.

Call of Duty: If you like a more "real" WWII experience and iron sights.

Call of Duty is still pretty fake though, big let down IMO, it was good compared to MoH but MoH is complete shit for realism.

Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II
Thief: The Dark Project
Thief II: The Metal Age
No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in H.A.R.M.s way
UT2004
Enemy Territory

UT2k4 definately but Far Cry.....eehhh. Depends what you're looking for.

If you're looking for stealth and tactical FPS, Far Cry should do it. But its got the worst storyline in the world. Operation Flashpoint is also a wicked game if your into stealth and tactics, but its a military shooter, kinda like Rainbow Six, but not....its hard to explain but the game is fantastic. Plus OP:F is 4 years old now so its bound to run alot better on your system than Far Cry.

Deus Ex 1-2
The Chronicles of Riddick
Unreal 2
Tron 2.0
Doom 3 + expansion
Painkiller
Far Cry
Halo
Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Games soon to come out or just came out that will be good.

SWAT 4
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
Quake IV
Project: Snowblind
Pariah
F.E.A.R.

I liked:

Half-Life 2
Half-Life 1 Or Anything Relating To It.
Doom 3
Chronicles Of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay
Far Cry
Halo 1
Halo 2
Chaser (Pick This One Up)
Clive Barkers Undying
Unreal Tournament 2004
Unreal 2: The Awakening
Unreal 1
Serious Sam 1
Serious Sam 2
Quake 2
Quake 1
Any Multi Player Unreal Or Quake Game.

Yeah some of them are a little older but I don't know what you played so... Overall for one that you most likely did not play, I'd go with Chaser.

Ewww.... Seriously, avoid Unreal 2. It's a dull, dull game and the whole attraction - the graphics - aren't cutting edge anymore anyway. Not to say I didn't enjoy it or that Kschreck is completely insane for at least liking it... but there are far, far better games you could burn cash on than this. I hear the MP component (that arrived ages after the game) wasn't all that bad, but no-one plays it and I cannot understand why anyone would want to play a game with the pop-guns that Unreal 2 has...

My list of Essential FPS:

Half-Life 2 (But you own this already... which may be a problem, because just about everything else will be a step down.)
System Shock 2 (A scary FPS with RPG elements)
UT2004 (Avoid 2003 like the plague!)
UT 1 (Debateably better than 2004, but there is less content and people playing it, so it just loses out)
Deus Ex 1 (Another superb FPS/RPG - the sequel is crap, but the original is so good that you'll probably want to play it anyway)
Half-Life 1 (and Expansions. And MP mods.)
Doom 3 (I liked it while it lasted, but otherwise it wasn't up to much)
Far Cry (Ack... a shooter that tear my opinion in two. The combat and some of the AI were refreshing, better even than HL2... but the repeatative locales and even the gameplay begin to grate about Half Way through, and the Voice Acting/Story is wrist-slittingly bad)
Quake 3 (TBH, there isn't much here worth it anymore. Q3 has had its time, but it is a game worthy of classic status)
Halo (this is really scraping into the bottom of the list though. It's a game with some excellent points but some goddamned awful ones as well)

And for enthusiasts, I'd recommend look up the Unreal, Quake and Doom back catalogues. The Thief games are also well worth it, though the engines they run on are really clunky.

Aside from that, there is a wealth of WW2 themed games like Battlefield and Call of Duty that I personally missed out on and have never got into.

Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising

150 player servers - It kicks ass

Offline: Call of Duty for the cinematics, FarCry for the graphics, Riddick for gameplay/story
Online: the Battlefield series

Unreal 2's weapons were amazing. Best guns in a game yet, next to painkiller. It was really fun and the story wasnt all that bad. The only thing that i would have like was it being alittle longer.

get a n64 emulator and play some goldeneye!

Or buy a used N64 and a copy of Goldeneye for £30 and play it on the controller it was designed for. :p

UT2004 all the way man. If your into multiplayer shooters, you must buy it. I got it two weeks after it came out and I still play it to this day.

Stay away from medal of honour and wolfenstien. They don't even deserve capital letters. Halo 1 is good but Halo 2 is very disapointing.

I have a Gamepad that is designed like the PS2 controller but quite a bit smoother and overall better. I have the controls set up for Super Mario 64 ALOT better. Took a while to get em there but they work like a charm.

The stick is move, the digital pad is the C Buttons.
The digital pad makes wonders for the C Buttons. In Super Mario 64, the C Buttons are for the camera.. I could never work them on the N64 controller. They work wonders on this.

Z would be the Right button on the right side.
A would be the bottem bottuon the right side.
B would be the left button on the left side.

It's works real real real easy and perfect.
Now if I New where a goldeneye rom was......*pm me*

Medal of Honor Allied Assault was ok, i just din't like it, too fake, may be your thing though

HALO (PC): It was about the most fun i have had in a while, MP is crap, unless you play with friends, on your own server. Single Player was fun for me, although the Flood part was really boring.

HALO 2 (XBOX):
I liked it for the MP part, dont get it for a good SP experience, cause it is very lacking. There are also certain phsics bugs (drop a frag nade under a 'hog and watch it fly into the air, never to be seen again).

Brothers In Arms (Console): I liked it, but it gets boring about halfway through. The graphics (in my opinion) were worse than HALO2, and worse that CoD. The talking squaddies are cool, but say the same thing over and over again.

Doom 3: Fun at first, but gets old, and it is very predictable. Lights go out, hear noise, lights come back on. You walk around a corner and there is a monster.

Half-Life 1: Get this for the MP and SP mods, the original game is fun to play through once, but after that it gets old (IMHO). Some good mods for Half-Life 1 are:

Counter-Strike: You just have to play the original to appreciate Source.
Hostile Intent: "The thinking mans FPS." This is both fun and realistic, and is one of the few HL1 mods with Iron Sights.
Brain Bread: Your Co-Op zombie mod. This one is actually pretty fun to play with friends, but online is hard, cause no-body does anything.
Natural Selection: FUN FUN FUN!! Not much more to say, that YOU MUST TRY IT!!!
Sven-CoOp: If you like to work together with your buds, get this. You can either go back through HL1 levels, or some custom created ones. It is incredibly fun, even online with strangers.

I reckon they were being a bit tongue in cheek with the plotting of that game.. there were plenty of jokes if you looked close enough.

For example; one thing that cracked me up was the stupid hawaiian shirt you wear.
When you get on the boat, the PA announcer is saying something like "be on the lookout for a dangerous man, armed etc, shoot on sight. He is wearing a red hawaiian shirt!" then the guards are all like "Hey you in the shirt!"

"How do you like them apples?!"
"Merc 1: I'll fix his little red wagon!
Merc 2: Little Red Wagon?! That's something my grandpa said!
Merc 1: FINE! I'll rip him up, I'll kick his ass, I'll eat his innards! Better?
Merc 2: Much better..."
I loved Far Cry. It does get a bit plain, and the last level is pretty ridiculous, but overall it's great.
Try:
No One Lives Forever 1 and 2 (Very funny and very fun! One of the greatest games out there)
Every Splinter Cell game (Although not an FPS, it's a really great game with a fantastic storyline and awesome gameplay and graphics to boot. Be sure to check out the newest one Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory that is going to be released in four(!) days)
Ghost Recon ( Very hard, very tactical, very fun: STAY AWAY FROM GHOST RECON 2 AT ALL COSTS)
America's Army (It's a mixture of Counter Strike and Rainbow Six. Plus, it's free.)
All of the Battlefield games (Amazing games with huge maps, and a lot of vehicles and mods to help it along. Be sure to watch out for Battlefield 2 that will be released in June)

Deus ex 2( not the first one!!!)
Call of duty
Hl1 and especially opfor.

That's a good list though I personally wouldn't waste money on Doom 3 or Quake 2.

Maybe broaden your scope from FPS's and play some strategy? And maybe vote for me while you're at it.

I'm not a huge fan of first person shooter games, but I have played quite a lot of them.

Doom Series
- Doom 3 is visually amazing and the classic games were fun. I always head back to Doom 1 and 2 for some fast fragging retro action, especially with some of the things the modding community has added to them over the years.

Deus Ex - This is good fun too, although I never played through it, people seem to have a good opinion of it.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein - No reason not to play this really, the "sequel" was released for free (Enemy Territory).

Quake Series
- They all have pretty good themes and fast action (Quake 1 is a classic and it's dull and dark colours give it a unique style, Quake 2 is more futuristic and Quake 3 has good multiplayer).

Unreal Series
- All good, but I haven't played Unreal 2 and from what I've heard it wasn't a good sequel. Unreal Tournament is good for multiplayer action and they all the games have really good mods such as: Red Orchestra, Frag Ops and Air Buccaneer.

Half Life 1 - Classic game that's stood the test of time, lots of mods with my favourites being: The Specialists, Sven Coop, G.H.O.S.T. Ops and The Trenches. Counter-strike and Day of Defeat are both good official mods.

America's Army - Free official game that is very realistic and fun. The new version coming out sounds awesome.

Medal Of Honor - Not a great game, but was still fun for awhile when I played it.

Classic Games:
Duke Nukem 3D (Plus the original 2D games)
Doom 1 and 2
Hexen
Heretic
Strife

Rather harsh way to put Doom3 & Quake2. The Doom3 expansion pack sounds exciting with all new gameplay & stuff, so there's one good reason to spend some money on Doom3. I loved both Doom3 & Quake2. Maybe I'll just always be loyal to ID :p

Don't like RTS's, don't like RPGs...FPS's are the only fun games for me.

1 vote for Ennui.

Excellent! I'm not a major fan of id anymore; I admire them for their Wolfenstein 3d, Quake 1 and Doom 1 days, but they went downhill from there. Probably due to Carmack saying that "Story in games is like story in porn movies. It's expected but not that important".

Masters of Doom is a great book though.

I've always been more for stealth based games and games that are third person. When I was younger, I played a lot more first person shooter games which is probably why I like them now... Good memories. :)

How many RTS games have you played?
Try Starcraft?
Simple. Fun. Easy to learn, Hard to master. 25 - 50k Users on average. No Gamespy Type Shit Multiplayer. Almost 100% perfectly balanced. 3 Very Diffrent Races. One Amazing Game. Considered by many, the King of RTS's.
