Rumor Control: PlayStation 3s won't play borrowed, used, or rented games

I thought alot of you knew about this rumor. This is half the reason sony = teh suck

Although it is a rumor, you know they will do it. Their view is likely,"get over it"
So much for trading in your old games!

Though it may seem like a logical thing to do so that Sony can get all the proceeds from games, its a completely idiotic business move at the same time as the used game market is huge with the cost of next-gen games being even higher, the need for a used game market is even greater.

I can even understand this move in terms of Sony not having as much of a foothold in the household of the future whereas MS holds a much stronger position thanks to Windows and their new consoles. I wouldn't be surprised if it went so far that games wouldn't display properly unless it was on a Sony TV. This is probably too drastic and there are still a ton of considerations for Sony, Hollywood, developers, and the gaming press and public to make before any of this comes to pass.

I predict this will never come to fruition. The repurcussions for them would far outweigh the benefits of this and many of the other crazy patents they have out there right now for "security purposes."

And Virus, try not to turn this rumor thread into a Sony-bashing thread. Please! We have all had enough of that kind of behavior!

Yeah, I definately think they'll be backing off from the DRM a bit since they've been getting sued lately over the crap they pulled with their audio CDs.

That will never happen... ever.
Too many people buy consoles to rent games.

IMO I highly doubt something like that would come true. Just think about it, not even borrowed games or rented? MMMKAY BOB!

Hey, if that happened atleast review sites and magazines would get more attention. Since people would count on them to choose what's good and what's crappy for them.

Unless, Sony pulls some slick shit where they mail you demos like all the time. Or they release demos and stuff online for you to download. <--- if then this I wouldn't mind at all.

not gonna happen.
...although if it does, sony deserves to go caput.

You know whats crazy is that i've heard something along the lines of their PS3 (an acronym for Piece of Shit 3)system not working on many T.V.'s! An effort to control the future direction of HDTV? With TV being one of sony's biggest areas, i would expect they want to steer things their way, but who F'n knows? System isn't out yet. How would they know? Technology expert? tell me!

 I'll try!

I just thought of something.
If they do incorporate this technology into their PS3, and you can no longer play used, borrowed, or rented games, sony could opt to sell their games for less. Think about that!

But on the other hand Blu Ray discs supposedly cost quite a bit, but this could still translate into competative pricing on their games don't you think? 49.99 sounds alot better than the things i have been hearing like 69.99 for their new games.

just a thought!

If it's going to be limited to just one machine, I probably wouldn't pay more than $30. I mean, I usually trade games with friends, rent them from Blockbuster, and end up only owning maybe 5-10 games that I really like. If they incorporate this into the PS3 and still have high prices... Xbox 360, here I come!

I usually own about 4 games, why spend 50 bucks on something you will play through once? BlockBuster Renting = teh sexeh!

That would be the stupidest decision ever in the gaming industry. It would drive Sony's console profits from highest to nonexistant. Just sounds like stupid rumour mongering. Can't we get some news about something that isn't unconfirmed ridiculous rumours?

I just found this article:
http://www.armchairempire.com/Editorials/playstation-3-only-new-will-do.htm

And it is making me think that there is a chance that the PS3 will use this.
This isn’t merely a coincidental side effect of this new DRM technology for Sony either. The company appears to be going out of their way to ensure that used games cannot be played on the PS3. This can be seen later in the patent filing, “It is an object of the present invention to provide a disk
recording medium for the protection of legitimate recorded media in which security is maintained so that the sale of used software and counterfeit software can be prevented.”

Recently a couple of high-profile industry figures have stepped forward to criticize the used game market: David Jaffe (creator of God of War), and Mark Rein (President of Epic Games). On top of this, a few years ago a number of Japanese game publishers were embroiled in a lawsuit to prevent the sale of used games by retailers in Japan. Although the lawsuit failed, in time Japanese publishers did managed to prevent the rental of videogames in their home market. With these facts in mind, it does suggest that there is a strong anti-used games sentiment in the development community.

I dont think that will happen. There is alot of profit from video game rental stores
