Well this is sort of related to the leak, but I visited www.****** today and they have an interesting article about many of the posters in HL2 being in Russian.

Obviously the one with a picture of Lenin is most bizzare.

so city 17 is a russian city? that explain the cold in concept arts

I think VALVe described it as Eastern European to avoid offending any one country.

or like in many games and movies, the ruskies could be the bad guys who have taken over another country

Very cool. I like how their "smilies" are all blocks. Oddly enough babelfish translates the russian words "half-life" into english as "half-bodice". lol. And they have a picture of Alyx's butt for some reason.

Yeah i was kinda surprised myself when i saw a poster of "Lenin". I mean for one thing, judging from the movies as well, alot of stuff in there like buildings and statues and stuff, hell for all i know even the tram looks like russian in the 23 min long E3 demo.
But hey, im cool with that, i love it
Cheers ;)

I don t know if you saw it in that website but there is a ****ing great section with more than 100 pictures of hl2.

First Freedom Fighters, and now Hl2. Hmm, if the Combine are communists I have more reasons to enjoy killing them. One thing though. In the pictures I've seen, all of their vehicles have strange markings. It's definitely not Russian,...It's not even real, actually. And I've seen, in the officially released screens, buildings with English text - Resturaunt billboards, road signs, etc. Perhaps it's a former Soviet Satellite.

-Ghost.

LOL, gotta love babelfish. "Half-Bodice of 2" sounds a bit like schizophrenic word sallad.

hahaha damn russkies, i reckon the plot is just acheezy rip off of the c old war, there actually aren't any aliens, tehyt're all the work of those ruskies and their experiements in chernobyl :p hahaha

I hope Russians will nuke USA in HL2 world and Gordon won't be able to stop them.

Valve didn't say eastern european city to not offend anyone.
A bit of russia counts as eastern european territory.

Well in the beta, in the maps section, the city has a name. And it isn't Russian. But posting it might give away something in the plot, which I can't do for obvious reasons.

Russian cities Roxxxxxx ! It will be good play on that city.

I lived in a Russian city for 10 years, and I can tell you that's not a Russian city at all. But the presense of the posters is still interesting

The markings on the vehicles and soldiers look like Arabic (not arabic script, as in english, but the text you'd find in Saudi Arabia).

And people view communism as evil. It is, to an extent. It's evil and bad in the real world. As an idea, a concept, even as an ideology, it's a great idea. Everyone is equal, nobody higher in status than the other. However, Marx's mind was a great more idealistic than the real world is. It's human nature to gain status above others, to climb the ladder and claw your way to the top. Human beings thrive on conflict, they need it to survive. Communism in the real world promotes dissention among the everyday peoples and corruption among the government and armed forces. Great idea in theory, horrible in execution. Just my $0.02.

That is definately an eastern european city - but not specifically Russian. If I had my shot at it - I would say Hungary, Romania, or Czech Republic. Many of the letterings in the game are Cyrillic but none of them make sense. Valve knows as much russian as Sean Connery speaks Russian.... (hint: he doesn't have a clue).

On the contrary, the words do make sense. For example all those posters seem to be advertising performances in theaters. They say (translated)

"Homeland"
"Winner"
"At seven in the evening"

What do you mean? What "text you'd find in Saudi Arabis" other than arabic? You mean calligraphy? If so, there are hundreds of varieties and none of them look like the alien script we've seen in HL2 (for one, all the letters are connected).

You don't need to translate Russian to someone who was born in St.petersburg (no not the one in Florida kiddies). It does not make sense because Valve got random textures for signs - I bet you they have no clue what they say. I could put an expletive in a sign and they wouldn't know the difference.
