Not only is it amusing, it also portrays the lives of most gay men who are coming out, the reactions they meet and the hostility they face, which I assume was the authors intention.

I think he overdid the stuff about the kid having fetishes, though; just because he's a homosexual doesn't mean he has to want leashes(and he didn't portray it like it was just to add more "strangeness" to him, in my opinion).
