Surely someone like, for instance, Blizzard must know how many potential customers they're turning away from their game when they do this, and yet it continues to be a rising trend. :/
If its anything like my own experience, or people's general experiences with executives, then they haven't the faintest idea what they're doing. They get an idea and have some initial research done by their highly paid suck-ups that confirm the notion. Then they hear all the arguments against it from "lower level employees", but being intelligent, high-stakes badass businessmen who know what they're doing, they do it anyways, and voila, moronic idea becomes policy. Then other execs see this big company doing it, and, being intelligent businessmen, they realize that this big company must know what its doing, so they follow suit, and voila, moronic policy becomes the next big business trend.
