hi, im running a hercules 3D prophet 9800 pro 128mb. my core speed is 378mhz and my ram speed is 338mhz. i think these are normal speeds :S but i was wondering wot safe levels i could OC it to with out it like exploding on me? any help from people that have done it would be appreciated.

I'd be interested in knowing this too, as I own the same card, but really can't be miffed doing any research to be honest.

your best bet would be increase it 1 notch in the overclocking scale at a time then run 3dmark then up it some more until u get artifacts and problems then lower it to the safest amount you can have... at as high as it can go :)

it varies from card to card, same with cpus, even the same model cpu, some batches might overclock better than other batches.

so basically, you slowly overclock and keep pushing it slowly until you get artifacts, then you back down a little until it runs clean and doesnt crash.

yup....there is no exact number...... its possible to be drastically differant even with the same card.....

wilbur may go twice as high as you rec and not see artifacts or vice versa

Go up, test it, then go up more if possible. It depends the quality of the RAM you got, the airflow in your case, and other factors as well.

I realise there's no exact number, I was hoping for a ballpark figure.

Instead of going up "notch by notch", it'd be nice to know a figure higher than default, but still believed to be safe on generally any 9800 Pro, and work up "notch by notch" from that point. :)

WEll, when you OC toomuch, your card doesn't blow up, it jsut stops. You should be able to restart the comp at the BIOS defaults, and it should run fine.

Once it gets too high, your screen will be all snow (artifacts), and/or it will jsut lock up.

I do have aguide on OCing stickied:)

Willber and rec, nobody can give a range without FULL specs, specifically your cooling.

o rite, well thanks, btw wot r artifacts? ive never known :s

anyone out there who has a 9800 pro, how high can u get ur card to run? jsut out of curiosity.

Actually, when I overclocked by Radeon 9700 Pro too far it got so hot it fried the circuits in the fan, stopping the fan, then it continued until it burnt itself out and died completely. So yes, at point of death, it stopped.

Unfortunately, it never turned back on again. If it wasn't for that incident, I wouldn't have bought the 9800 Pro I have now.

Trust me, you'll know them when you see them, heh.

You can o/c your core to 415 easily, I'm not too sure about the ram, but 347-350 sounds reasonable. Remember, the room temperature matters, alot.

I know its not the same card, but I clocked my Mobility Radeon 9000 by 20%. Bear in mind that a laptops cooling probably isnt as effective as a desktop so you should be good for that. Dont forget though that all chips are different and the same batch of chips could have vastly different ratings, so some will OC fine, some not. So basically this post was of no use whatsoever :cheese: :cheese:

Hrm...That can be considered your fault. The card would have locked up/ are amd ethe screen unreadable with artifiacts before it would have fried itelf out, and at that point you should have turned you're comp off or restarted it.

Or you're card was really f**ked.

Artificats are liuttle white speckles ("snow") that appear on your screen when you've overlcocked the card too much.

Artifacts can come in many more varieties than just snow. Basically, artifacts a just problems in the display. Thing might be missing or added. I used to be able to tell what was wrong by what variety of artifacts I got. It was something like black dots means the GPU is clocked too high while white dots mean the memory is clocked too high.

As far as conservative 9800 Pro overclock goes, I would say ~400 MHz on the GPU and ~345MHz on the memory. Remember, there is a reason ATI chose to clock the core and memory where they did.

I was going to say the exact same thing, lol.

"To put it bluntly... you've got a f_cked up card :D Happy Day!"
