Most Half-Life 2 modifications start out by releasing un-skinned renders of weapons, then gradually build up a huge library of content while the core gameplay remains untouched. The Sand of War team are trying an alternate method; all the player models, weapons and animations have been ported straight over from CS:S, meaning Sands of War 2 is focused on the central experience rather than shiny new extras. [br] [br] Is it any good? Well, I’ll let you be the judge of that. Sand of War 2 has just been released as a first beta, available to download here. The objectives of SoW are very similar to Day of Defeat; there are a number of locations scattered around the environment, marked by a flag, that players can capture for their team. Naturally, the first team to cap all of the flags, wins. [br][br]There are three maps included with this beta; Fortress, a Middle-Eastern style village overshadowed by a central tower; Oil refinery, where the two teams start in their respective bases, separated by a large stretch of land; and finally Race, an interesting face-off where the winning team must reach the other end of the map, using a Half-Life 2 buggy, before their opposition. Sands of War 2 is rather rough around the edges, even for a first release, but it has great potential. [br] [br] To visit the official site, click here.
