Ok, i just got a saturday job and worked once on saturday just gone. It's in a shop and it is THE most tedious thing i've ever done, honestly you could train a monkey to do this.
Basically i get £30.24 (because i'm only 16) for 8 hours work. It takes up my whole saturday leaving me free time in the region of zero on saturdays. This annoys me.
I also have a paper round on the mornings which takes up 10-30 mins a day before school(a-levels) and doesn't cut into my free time.

I was seriosly thinking about quitting, what do you guys think?

Its all a question of values. What do you value more? The money you get, or not having your saturday spent working?

Other than that, look for something unusual as a job, to keep it interesting. You know, some farm work maybe. That may sound crappy to you, but look for something interesting and/or different and the work day will pass a LOT faster. Work at a paintball field might be another fun idea.

omg you have to work 8 hours on a saturday?! those fiends ...burn the store down

I work on a Sunday. Time & a half. Horticultural wage. Only 6 hours. And all I have to do is weed flowers and be nice to old people. Get 45 quid from that. Then I get another 30 quid a week for going to school. And another 20 quid a month from my dad and 10 quid a week from my mum. All adds up to a nice tidy sum of 360 quid a month. I can work with that easily. And I still get good grades at school and have an excellent social life.

Quid to US $ please?

Too lazy to look it up on google

Edit: actually typed Squid the first time.

I treasure more a free Saturday. But I haven't had a job yet, but I will when I move to NL.

Yeah, like anyone wants to open a book on Sundays anyway. It's good that you are making good use of your time though. It's more productive than staying at home sitting on the couch watching TV..

I turned my saturday job into a part time job, I did a 12 hour day the other day, because my boss doesn't do all his work, so I have to do it for him.

I hate that I do the work, but don't get paid for it.

I worked a 7 hour saturday job for 18 months whilst doing my a- levels; Although it takes the whole day up, u still have friday and saturday evening free plus sunday to do work. I used to do a paper round too, but I quit it once i got the saturday job, because i wanted more sleep.
In the end...if u need the money then do it.

Im now working in a pub in my gap year to pay for travelling and at the average weekend I do
7 hours friday evening, 8 hours saturday evening and 12 hours double shift on sunday.

Compared to that a saturday day job isnt too bad.

I can't believe you get money for turning up at school. It's bloody stupid, this money could be spent better elce where.

If they want to pay me to learn stuff I shan't complain. Everyone else can, but I won't. :E

It's not bloody stupid. You get money for going into post-16 education which is not mandotory, and you only get money if you come from a low income household to help fund your A-levels and to encourage you to attend.

When I went to school, I didn't qualify for low income support.

Damn all those low incomers, flaunting their wealth.

The high incomers will overthrow the low income bourgeoise!

Me neither! Lets seize their wealth and re-distribute it :D

Wow...pretty much any job at that age is going to be weekends.

That is how my job is. Actually I have 2 of them. I work one during the week after my college classes and the other job I work on the weekend. I usually work 8 hours per shift and still have plenty of time for homework? My friends all work the same shift patterns so we hang out after work until morning. As for homework...well I cheat. My weekend job is running movies at a movie theater so I do it there.

Cheers for the thoughts i think i'm going to quit. At least until next year when i won't get EMA any more, i don't really need the money anywho

I think you should keep the job, purely because if you think working for eight hours a day leaves you with "zero free time", you're in for a big shock when you go to work proper.
I work nine hours a day, and I commute from near the border of Hertfordshire to Westminster which takes about one and a half hours each way...nothing exceptional about that, the hours are pretty standard for London and probably the majority of workers here are commuters.
Five days a week. And I still find time to get things done in the evening.

You can either ease yourself into real life (and the jobs you get to start with will be things a monkey could do, but they'll still be hard to come by), or get thrown in and get a real shock. I'd say the first option is more sensible.

Actually I'm not entirely sure but I think so, hence, your situation rules :E

jesus 8 hours a day isn't that much you know.. you should be lucky to have this job.. i live in sweden and can't find a single saturday job, except macdonalds

yeah i've heard that too. but things in sweden aren't that cheap.. I get ridiculously little benificiary money and I live in my own apartment and go to high school (i'm 18).. my parents have to help me out with food and rent basically

The point i'm trying to make is that i'm only 16 and currently don't need the money. I WILL get a job next year but i want another year or at least until after christmas. I know that i'm going to have to work sometime and being eased in will be better, but i don't need or want to yet.

Your point is well taken. I didn't have a job when I was at college either - I really didn't see the point. I valued my time more, as you seem to.
It just rang my personal alarm bells when you made out like 8 hours a day, one day a week - a day when you don't have to get up the next morning was a soul-crushingly long time.
It's good to be prepared, y'know?

I can't believe you get paid for going to school, Reg. You saw them coming :)

i'm 17 and i have a job, i'm at work now. it can be inconvenient but it really pays off, literally.

i'm probably getting a job as a telemarketer...LOL i know i hate them just as much as the rest of the world does but the pay is pretty good for a highschool student. $9.00/hr and if you sell 1 thing (dunno what i'm selling yet) per hour for 4 hours then you get commission which is $16.00/hr :D

I heard people quit after like a few months cuz they can't take it anympre, but oh well, i'm saving up for a brand new pc...or maybe ps3? or 360??

lol i made a rhyme :D

Sounds good. Just don't call me.

To the OP:

If you don't need the money (or at least not enough to work 8 hours on a Saturday), then why did you get the job?

Oh, let me guess, your parents.

So if you quit....I bet they wouldn't be very happy. I got a job in the summer when I didn't really need the money (at least, I didn't THINK I did, turns out I really did, and still do). Previous to that all I did was referee hockey in the winter. Anyways, I didn't really push to get this job. During the summer it involved about 20 hours a week or so, 4 hour shifts during the week usually, and then a 4 or 9 hour shift on Saturday.

I really didn't like it at all, I definetly wanted to quit, but my parents would be really mad/disappointed so I just managed to live through it, and now I don't find it so bad.

Now I'm back in school (first year of an IT program) and this week I went to school monday - thursday and worked 17 hours on the weekend.

Basically, it comes down to, if you really don't need the money (are you sure about that?), what will your parents think? My guess is they pushed you to originally get the job, so...

I really never get the idea of why you can't quit from a job you don't like because your parent's would be upset? If it makes you feel like shit, quit! and either get another job, or cut expenses.

I used to work at my parent's pet store, 6:30 am to 4:30 pm listening to stories about how they accidently killed thier bird, and then buying one off us.

10 hours = $15.

Ahhh... you must be one of those only childs?

Oh man, if one of my siblings or I were an only child....we'd drive a 30 thousand dollar car at the age of 16.

Notice how I said me or one of my siblings. That pretty much covers me against any "you selfish jerk" remarks coming my way.
