Do you know what sauna is? I bet that anyone from nordic countries does, but do anybody from US or England know what it is and what you do with it? And do people know what is Finland? Because sauna is strongly related with Finland. I am just curious to know :)

I wait for HL2 alot and I want to make the time easier waiting for it ;)

Sauna?

I'm not sure if it has the same meaning there, but here in the states it's a room that is heated to an extreme temperature to relax in. Usually this is done with heated rocks. They're quite nice.

Oh and sometimes water is put on the rocks to make steam.

its a steam room isnt it, i dont like them, its hard to breath in them. i beleve they have them all over the world...

edit: foiled again:(

there nice when its cold out

saunas rule, go to one. but it is hard to breathe, and makes you tired.

Most people from the US and UK know what a sauna is.

Sauna isn't the one with steam in it. It's somewhat different from the steamed room.
Sauna has this thing we here in Finland call "kiuas" where you have these rocks. The rocks are heated from below by burning fireplace or by heating with electricity. Sauna is usually heated up to 80-100 celsius. You throw water to rocks for them to release heat. Steam is produced but it vanishes right away. So no steam there. Many people like to relax in sauna and end up being there up to half an hour. We also have sauna gnomes that are these mysterious creatures watching that the sauna is in its right temperature etc..
Last but not least, everyone should be naked in sauna :) And you should get a six-pack of cold beer ready after sauna.

Cheers.

yeah, ive been in an actual sauna as you call it scopeD... and yes beer is nessasary

It's funny, I've been to Finland, and the one thing my mom always got on me about was the pronounciation of sauna (she's 100% Finnish, I'm only 50% and only been there once)

I say "saw-nuh," she demands "sow-nah"

Anyhow, I've been in saunas both in America and Finland, go me!

Heh, I knew that one finnish would reply to this.
Sometimes we make some sausages over a 'kiuas'. Also in winter time some of us like to go out and roll over in snow! :)

I have been to one in Mammoth Lakes, CA. I got in, and I didn't like it, so I went back to our condo. We go there in the summer to race a national motocross race. It is really fun to ride motorcycles on the Mammoth track. We stay in a condo and take the gondola to the top of the mountain and ride bikes down it. Mammoth Mountain rules. The air is so clean, there are trees everywhere, the food is good, and it is just all around fun. We like to go eat at this place called Grumpy's. Has anyone that lives in the United States been to Mammoth?

I'm Finnish, perkele.

It's not uncommon for the entire family to go into a sauna together. Naked. Some people see this as incest or whatever. Same thing in public swimming halls (except there are different facilities for men and women). Wooden saunas are better than electric ones.

Wow! I didn't know you had a finnish mum! That's cool!

When you were in Finland, what places did you visit?

Yep, olen aivan samaa mieltä(I agree with you completely). Wooden saunas are MUCH MUCH better then electric ones. Mostly because of the feeling you get when you hear the burning of the wood and the crackling of the fire. Also they produce a better "löyly"(that's what it's called when you throw water on the "kiuas", or oven". It's more even, the löyly. Also Wooden saunas aren't as dry as electric ones.

Helsinki, mostly. We went to some smaller towns/cities, but I don't remember their names. This was 10 years ago, so I was pretty young.. the reason we went was because my mom's mom died, and we attended her funeral :(

Wish it had been happier circumstances, I didn't even know my grandmother though, so it wasn't quite as devastating

Yeah I know some people from finland, your bloody crazy about saunas. Dont blame you but why do you all have them?? Im confused

YAY! Someone else uses a sauna too !

Anyway every time I go to the gym I go to the sauna, that's about 2-3 times a week.

Nice! What kind of saunas you have there? are they heated electric or wood? And what temperatures you have in one?

So much questions :)

Edit: And these questions are pointed to anyone that are not from Finland.

i've never been to one...but now with u guys talking.. its peaked my curiousity...
i'd like to go, given the chance.. :)

After going to the gym I always go into the sauna and/or steam room (turkish bath). Great for relaxation, and you don't suffer from muscle-ache (is that the word) the next day.

And of course the occasional naked goddess that joins you in a small sweaty area isn't bad ;)
