Increasingly autonomous, gun-totting robots developed for warfare could easily fall into the hands of terrorists and may one day unleash a robot arms race, a top expert on artificial intelligence told AFP.

"They pose a threat to humanity," said University of Sheffield professor Noel Sharkey ahead of a keynote address Wednesday before Britain's Royal United Services Institute.

I had to check 3 times to make sure I wasnt on the Onion

"Skynet, man, the machines man, WE'RE ALL DEAD, IT'S GAME OVER MAN!!!"

It is only a matter of time before the machines enslave the world in an Orwellian society.

You and me both Stern! They'll probably do a much better job than our current political affair anyways.

On a serious note, how can this be any more devastating than the Space Race during the 50's and 60's between Russia and the U.S. trying to prove who has the superior ICBM technology?

Tin plated overlords or tin-hatted scientists...

Me not sure.

Tin plated overlords will probably eventually be self-learning, making tin-hatted scientists obsolete. So I'd say both. ;)

I'm sure we'll have the people with the stuff to save us.

Ahhh. That makes everything better.

It's just a front. It's distracting people from the real killers- lovebots.

Yes! you are my best friend for ever now! I was hoping someone would make a futurama joke, and when I saw almost nothing I damn near cried;(
but yeah, for the most part we don't have to worry about killbots, they have a preset kill limit, so those of us that survive can just remove their weapons before they come back online.

 How much are these "scientists" getting paid?

"Scientists" aren't saying it. One professor is.

I've never understood why people use quotes on "Scientist". I mean, you're either a scientist, or you're not, there's no middle ground to be had.

The media would have us believe anyone in a white coat is a scientist.

I love that 'Scientists are predicting' or 'Scientists have found', when 9/10 its one guy. Whats with the plural???

In this case, its true.

scientists travel in packs like wild hyenas

If you read the article, The threat is specifically from terrorist organizations getting a hold of semi-autonomous drones like the Predator and using them against people, not from autonomous robots themselves.

Since when do we let concerns of genocide impede progress? :frown:

That would make an awesome novel/film

wait..
