As we all know, many websites need to work with a wide range of desktop resolutions, therefore, in the interest of giving the web designers of the various mods the easiest time in creating their respective websites please tell us what resolution your desktop is at.

If none of the resolution matches your please pick the closeest one.

I use 1280 x 1024 on my NEC MS97F 19'

You should have added the dual and above desktop sizes, some are gonna complain heh

1280x1024 is not a standard 4:3 resolution like all of the others... 1280x960 has the correct ratio.

Anyway, I don't really care. I run in 1600x1200.

EDIT: ... and what about people that are using interlacing instead of progressive scanning?

This is an old issue about the 1280x1024 thing.. It's only a problem for those producing work for NTSC display, its not an issue with PAL.. and even then it's got no baring where only monitor display is concerned.. I remember the same argument three years ago on Usenet. Twas great fun.. not :p

Come on people. Just give the poll a quick click. Its a desktop resolution poll, its not as if its asking you would prefer to kill baby penguins or baby dolphins.

Yea but you don't need scientific experiments to know what the best resolution is. If you know the visitors are HL2 gamers you can assume they can run 1024x768. Personally I use tables with percentages. In the last page I made, I have done the page so it can be viewed in 800x600 (because I know some visitors have crap compu) but it resizes itself automatically to take all the space possible for their resolution so everyone is happy :) I don't like centered Website with big borders on the side (I'm in 1280x1024). That's why I use tables with % . I hope this has given you guidelines... :)

Yes why don't people use % ?

In 1600x1200 HL2.net is just a thin streak up the middle of the page. It would help if the forums would atleast resize.

I never scale a website for anything over 1024x768.

Oh man I have a crap PC ;(

This has been actually helpful I run at 800x600 and had never known ppl run much higher I always thought it looked goofy with those higher resolutions and things like my desktop icons were too small , they just seem bigger in the smaller resolution. I run under win 2000 and dont have the cool winXP look on my desktop ( kinda blah ) but now that I know most of your sites are set for higher resolution I think I'll change mine gonna take a little getting used too.

Now here is a question I want to run by you guys if I use the higher resolutions will pages load up faster ( better performance ) ?

I have a good PC even getting D3 and not worried but havent ever noticed performance issues so is this changing the resolutions really nessary. Like will I have problems viewing smaller web pages when I log onto them or will things look normal still. Im only concerned because 800x600 is doing me ok and really hate new things.

Unless the new things come in HL2 packages.

Yea, after a while in 1024x768, thrust me you'll never want to run on 800x600 again!! I have another crappy computer too that is not running XP (I installed Win2000 2 weeks ago, was using Win98 :) ) but I still set the resolution to 1024... I have noticed that alot of gamers use 1024 and above, probably because someday they have seen that they can change that cool option in game (resolution) so they have tried it on their desktop and they have found out it's much better. After 2 weeks you don't want to get back to 800x600 :)

A few years ago you might have noticed a speed difference between 800x600 and 1024x768, but these days your very unlikely to, with the exception being Doom III which is likely going to suffer at high resolutions until machines get much faster (though hopefully I'm wrong) but for most stuff you'll be fine

You say 2 weeks ? lol

I think I will set it to 1024x768 seems to be the majority I can get all the resolutions fine tryed them I can go up to 1600 but what a trip I thought I was in need of glasses...

I did go right back to 800x600 :( I dont think im ready for the full 1600 yet so maybe if I do one resolution size a week I can ajust to it.

Edit - thanks fenric for the update on performance.

ok Mr-T, I was gonna let it slide but finding your pulling this stunt forget it. Warned, no advertising without permission from D33 or Admin. Post deleted.

Man, now I'm all curious as to what he was offering...

And, I run at 1024 but when I design a site I do it for computers that run 800. Mainly I do this because most of my clients are 50+years old and that's the common resolution for grannies.

I go at 1280x1024. It fits a lot of stuff on the page :)

It's really true about changing resolutions - if you go from 800x600 to 1024x768, or from 1024x768 to 1280x1024 (and you can still read it) you won't ever want to change back :)

I tyred it but these eye's are 37 yrs old now and have had to reduce the resolution back to 800x600 in order see.

It was all interisting to see how the forum looked as just a stripe down the center, This forum in particular is set for 800x600 right? seem's to fit it exactly perfect. Like many other forums I have used.

I even played with alot of the functions like changing my win scheme from standard size to large and extra and changed the text size to largest but that just makes my toolbars more readable and not the actual forum posts was too small to read.

I felt like I was a sattilite in orbit trying to read some guys newspaper and there was some glitch in the system the lense got dirty ;)

Reason I posted again was so you know I didnt change my vote to a higher rez Im staying with my vote on 800x600.

In IE you can make the text more readable by doing one of these: View -> Text Size -> Largest... or Ctrl + Mouse Wheel.
In Opera: View -> Zoom -> 200%... or Ctrl + Plus.

Opera is a lot more flexible in terms of that... and... well... everything. Opera's zoom feature resizes everything, whereas IE's text size sometimes screws up a page's layout and the pictures will still be tiny.

I have to know tricks like that for when I forget my contacts... because I have 20/400+ vision.

I use 2048x1536 since it allowes me t get more stuff on my screen. (got a 22" trinitron)

2560 x 1024. Dual Monitors baby :naughty:, but i clicked 1280x1024 anyways cause doin a webpage over 2 monitors would be kinda crappy with the gap between them and everything.

1280x1024 due to my snazzy ProphetView 920 (/plug). but 1024x768 on my 19inch server monitor.

You shouldnt use tables in design layout anyway :P Should be CSS. Except CSS doesnt have "fill as much space as possible" option, which is SOOOOOOOO ANNOYING :)
