Well, I came up with an idea to create a martial arts mod featuring eastern martial arts (as for now). And no Im not trying to rip off ideas and such from Mortal Kombat series, Kai (wahtever the name is), or Tekken series.
I am a martial artist myself (3nd deg. blackbelt taekwondo, 2nd deg. blackbelt hapkido, Apprentice rank in Wing Chun), I'll be greatful to add educational purposes to the mod and teach the gamers step by step for techniques that we use (wether they want to do it or not) as a bonus feature of the mod.
Well I just want the mod to be either TDM or DM. Or objective matches where 1 team guards a sacred scroll in an eastern style sanctuary while other team attempts to steal it and bring it back to their safe point or their temple.
Here are basic martial arts that I would love to add to the game. (Trust me, Animations wont be that hard because I know the flow of the movements and how fast they need to be). I want to make it Half reallistic, Half exaggerated (Like ninjutsu).

Here are the basic martial arts that I would love to add for the mod (I have taken all of these following):
1) Shotokan Karate (Japanese)
2) Ninjutsu (Japanese) <-- I havent taken this one any longer than a month.
3) Taekwondo (Korean)
4) Hapkido (Korean)
5) Kenjutsu "True Swordsmanship" (Japanese)
6) Wing Chun Wushu (Chinese)
7) Shaolin Kungfu (Chinese)

Well, I know some of those time periods wont fit historically but I would want to make the Era as the olden era (Like in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon).

Before I even start thinking of anything further than this, I would like to hear your feedback about this mod concept. thanks!

yes yes! you'll be the legendary ninja.. lol

Sounds like it could be fun especcially in DM, IF the martial art fighting is pulled of well this could be a really great mod :) Seems like you're gonna need a whole lot of animation if you want all those martial arts in it, how about posting about it on the modDB.com forum if you haven't already?

I'd love to hear more about it, perhaps a more elaborate "design doc" is in order :D Btw, it would be fun if you could make a mode where everyone else has a "so-so" fighting "skill" and this one guy has a "omgimasuperstrongmaster"fighting "skills" and these guys have to work together together to take'im down.

Serenade, are you actually going to work in some capacity for this mod (modeler, coder, mapper, etc.) or are you just throwing out an idea? I'm curious because your idea sounds exactly like a project I've been keeping quiet and working on an (incredibly) lengthy design document for, right down to one of the (many) gametypes planned.

Perhaps you could be valuable to the team I'm going to try and assemble. PM me if you're interested; the design isn't quite complete yet in writing, but when it is there'll also be a recruiting post in this forum.

Hmm, have you taken any martial arts (out of curiosity), If not then its a person who actually knows about martial arts vs. a random guy that doesnt know martial arts. Other than that, im amazed that you had the same idea as me. What i fear the most is IF we team up; facing compromise and losing some game concepts that ive been in planning in my mind.

Hold on, are you saying that if Darkside55 doesnt do a martial art he's not right for designing a mod on it? You may do a martial art but that does not mean you know more than Darkside55.

I like the idea of a martial art mod, but thats a hell of a lot of animations. Also, you will most likely be forced to cut things out of your design in the end. You'll find out some stuff just wont work, or they wont work in the exact way you planned.

hes prob just sayin that he'd prefer not to see some stereotypical martial arts thing (or a so-called martial arts like Steven Segal where enemies run one at a time and throw crap punches) - i also do martial arts and would prefer to avoid something like that...

Idea sounds good but doing melee fighting is quite hard - blocking, kicking, punching, etc...and look how fast some martial artists are...Goin to be a test of reflexes and clicking maybe :(

No, I don't have any formal training in martial arts. I've gotten some hard-knocks lessons with a friend of mine who is an accomplished martial artist (he's studied kendo, wu shu, shotokan, many types of sword fighting techniques, not just from Asia), as well as being a gymnastics coach for Olympic hopefuls, but that's pretty much the extent of my martial arts training outside of parotting old kung fu movies. I have him as a consultant but I thought it might be nice to have another.

I can say this though...while I'm not trained in the realm of real fighting I'm a Soul Calibur and Capcom vs. SNK 2 champion, and with the former I've mastered frame data...literally seeing and being able to predict my opponent's movements within a 10th of a second and react accordingly. So out of everyone who says they're going to make a mod that has heavy fighting game influences, I'm probably the most qualified.
Edit: I should probably emphasize that I meant I'm most qualified for making a game based off of fighting games due to my knowledge about how those systems work; the movements that the characters do might not be accurate to real-life styles, but the game system would be designed by someone who knows a great deal about fighting game systems and what it'd take to bring a fighting game into a 3D realm.

And yeah that was pretty interesting that we had a similar idea. I guess if you think about it it's not too big a coincidence; if you're talking about martial arts during the older periods of Asian history, and you're thinking about a CTF-type game, there's not much you can steal. Scrolls instantly come to mind; in fact, I didn't think about a capture the scroll mode until two or three weeks back when I thought about expanding game modes.

Anyway if we don't collaborate it's cool. I just figured that similar ideas might go together.

Intresting idea, but as some people have already stated the fighting system would make or break this mod. I know you have experiance in martial artist, but how do you plan on pushing this into your animators heads. Unless you are the animator your self? Anyway generally it could be good using your imagination but you would need a high quality team to produce anything with true quality, but I wouldn't let that stop you. Just remember to keep your standards high and take your time.

3rd -_-; that was at type'o.. anyway the reason why i asked wether darkside55 did martial arts was because i want to avoid the unreallistic movements that dont really exist in that certain art. Also, I hate seeing steven segal kind of bs coreograph movements.

Just to let people know, this guy posted about his genesis mod on hl2world and appears to be stealing other's artwork.

This is what he posted:

I don't know for sure, but he has yet to defend himself against these accusation. Every piece is of a completely different style and thus unlikely to come from one person. Also, they seem much to high quality for regular mod concept work. Plus he has shown no inclination to prove that he did not steal them.

If he truly did create them I apologize, but I doubt it. Just a warning to those interested in this mod.

Dude, that's pathetic, there's NO good excuse for stealing other peoples work, jeez...

hmm...big accusations there...

Not cool though if accurate and not good to accuse if wrong...

He's had ample time to contradict them in that thread I linked to, but he hasn't done so. However, as I said above, I am not sure and I will assuredly apologize if it's not true.

But if it is true I don't want people who may be interested in the mod to be unaware of it. That would not be fair to them.

So I'll let him defend himself and I'll be glad to admit I was wrong if that is the case. At this point I do not think it appears so though. I really can't see him spending hours and hours creating such detailed artwork for a mod when a little while later he says, "Screw genesis." And why didn't he post them in his thread on this forum? Surely one would want to show off such amazing artwork as much as possible?

I like the "City of the dead" pic.... whoever made it lol
