Ever Since I heard that there was an SDK for half life 2 i was looking all over the place for it. Download.com, Bearshare, Even some other sites i need not to mention. Today i just found it. In the steam menu.:hmph:
But anyways, the only way to make mods is to buy $100 software?
Is this true? Or is there freeware somewhere? I need some answers!!:sniper:

Techinically, if you look in the right places, you can scrap together some free and legal software that will do the job. However, it is always better if you pay and use the commercial versions.

yeah im sure. but i do not like paying money. steams lucky i paid for half life 2.;)

No you're lucky you paid for HL2. VALVe knows who plays the cracked versions ;)

Different programs are for free, like Hammer (for maps) or XSI (for models).

The $100 program he s talking about is MSVC++. Theer are other free c++ compilers, they just arent as good ;)

And 99% of other compilers don't even work with the sdk.

There are alternative ways to getting MSVC++ though...

"Arrr" (AH - Rhh) is a colloquial pirate phrase, typically snarled during moments of intense internet piracy and swashbuckling, intended to not only affirm the overwhelming pirateyness of the speaker, but instill an additional sense of fear and awe in the "Land Lubber".

Read: Piracy joke. Jeez. :hmph:

How could it take you this long to find the SDK?! Did you not run Steam the entire time?

Not everybody takes the time to scroll down the list of available steam content to notice the SDK. Hell, if you were to look at a glance at the Play Games window, you'd just think that scrolling down would offer more old VALVe games that you don't have.

^ QFT. When I installed my first mod, I didn't find it because I didn't think it would be located in the 'Play Games' tab below :p

Nonsense. There are plenty of equally good or better free compilers out there.

blah

Somewhere someone said that you could code your own mods with Dev-C++ (free and good GUI) but dont know where that was... :hmph: But the problem is that will Devc++ make the dll:s the right ways etc... so will your mod work? :imu: Noone knows... test yourself and use google...

I think it would be hard. mainly because if two different programs are used to compile interacting files(modwhatever.dll, hl2.exe) the files dont always agree :p

And there a perfectly compliant C++ compilers, but MSVC++ can compile a slightly off-spec version of C++, which microsoft did on purpose so good OSS compilers won't work with their stuff :p

You can get a copy of MSVS .NET 2005 beta 2 posted to you for free in the UK (without being an MSDN subscriber). It is time-limited, but will allow you to make a start, and see if you wanna splash out.

Well can anyone give me a link to freeware or something so i could download and make my own mods??

I have Sorce SDK and got it for free legally. I never saw it in the steem buy menu.

well i have gotten XSI for half life 2 now so my problem is solved.
but now i just have to figure out how to use it.....
