Havent heard much news about the release of the SDK. Does anybody know if it will be released in a few weeks, sometime at the end of August, begining of September..? If the game acctualy does come out on the 30th Sept wouldnt the SDK be out at least 4 weeks before that..!
I hope so.

They haven't confirmed when it's going to be released, so just wait and see.

And I hate to say it, but please use the search button =)

A skeptic to the end, I doubt the SDK will make it in August. I mean I especially can't see why the code would be released in a non-gold state, but then again I'm a nub, so maybe Sniper or somebody else who knows what the hell they're talking about will have a smarter less knee-jerk opinion than mine. :)

I remember someone mentioning that they were going to release it in August. They haven't said when.

Does anyone know if downloading the SDK will spoil the game at all?

And you can't search for "SDK" on the forums, you need to have at least four letters.

I remember seeing recently that it's coming out after HL2.

Where did you read that?

Some people have read an Interview at Halflife2 Source which said that the SDK won't be given to Mod Teams before it's Public Release, and they thought it meant that the SDK is coming out after Half Life 2 is released. What it meant was that nobody gets hold of the SDK before anyone else, not that its release date is after HL2's.

This post hasn't been very coherant, sorry.

How will you compile your maps if you get the sdk early? And also are they going to release all the textures and models and so on? If so we might ruin the game for ourselves by finding stuff we aren't supposed to in there

you can't make a map without hammer, so i wouldnt worry about compiling them quite yet ;p

no, the textures are in wad files which come with the game.

no chance of ruining the game, the SDK is simply a software development kit, it's not going to let you create maps, or run maps, or compile maps, what it WILL let you do is start coding a mod in c++.

[edit]

sorry they're not wad files in hl2 i dont think, or maybe they are, i forget, but the point is, they come with the game, most likely not the sdk.

They said they would only be releasing the sdk early to people who get to the valve mod makers summit.

I heard it was out this month. :O
or at least part of it.

I hope it is, oh please please let it be this month

Yes its going to be released, but not to the general public.

What? Where did you find that out.

The SDK is going to be released to the public.

Yes.....AFTER THE GAME HAS BEEN RELEASED.

The only people who will get the SDK early are those at the expo.

naah, not this month... i have heard august...

Oh ffs... it's august now... omfg HYPE HYPE HYPE IT ALL!

The interview both I and Rilcon linked to says that no mod team is going to get to early. I haven't seen anything which says the release of the SDK is going to change to after the game has been released.

I read an interview a week or 2 ago that said it would be released to groups at the expo.

And I remember hearing Valve say that a handful of select mod teams already have the SDK, such as the Counter Strike team and the makers of Day of Defeat. No word on the public release.

Wont The SDK Come With The game Half-Life2?
Thats the way it was with HL1.

they want to get it out to people before the game is out so they can start on mods. and with HL i believe it was a few months or so after it was out that the SDK was released, although worldcraft (hammer) came with HL if i recall correctly.

Won't the SDK be about 1 GB and really test the steam network?

Mhmmm...

the SDK is done, the coding is finish
and believee it or not, some modders already have it
:dork:

we already knew modders close to valve already had it (duh)

/me thinks "LUCKY BASTARDS !" :)

What exactly is so fantastic about SDK? And what does it do?

SDK = software development kit. Its ths stuff people use to make modifications such as counter strike and day of defeat. It includes tools such as map editors and the like as well as the code behind the game itself

And Valve have said they would release it to everyone
they said they would release it this month
they said it would be out before the game is
they said specific mod teams would get it first
they said the CS and DOD teams allready have it.

those are my facts for this topic :)

That way we'll be able to make skins and maybe see the ones from Half-Life2 by the time they release it?

we will be able to do whatever we want, but i dont know when valve will release all the content from the game itself. Its likely to just be the tools at first. :)

The mostly likely time I would imagine is when the game goes gold. Then they release that day.

i heard that was planned to be the 15th september. so :( if thats true.

but like i said. I have heard that it will be out THIS month. we can hope

Yeah, I have heard many rumors of it coming out this month too. :p

lol, but i dont mean rumers. i seem to remember it being said by valve somewhere. But i cant be arsed to find it. The thing is. will it be to everyone or just mods that go to that damn expo thing or whatever. cos my mod team wont get there :(

I thought their plan was to debut it at the mod expo and that it would be released to the general public around the same time.

But unless you know C++ and the ins and outs of game programming, the SDK isn't going to be of much interest. All the fun stuff like Hammer and SofImage XSI won't be released before the game. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if the few select teams already have access to some of these tools.

Are you sure Hammer won't come with it? As far as I'm aware when you download the HL1 SDK you get the Hammer Editor with it.

I remember someone at another forum saying that they'd be a demostration of the Lip Sync Technology with the SDK. I'd get it just for that.

I hadn't heard that. I do know that Hammer won't be part of the initial SDK release as Valve has said as much, though these plans may have changed.

has it been quoted by valve that Hammer won't be released early? I mean, its part of the SDK too (if you download the full SDK, its got Hammer, code, model stuff, sound stuff, everything), and also as HL2 is out you can do the more w/ it than you can w/ the other parts of the SDK. After all, with the way HL2 levels are built (doing architecture and then texturing over placeholders later) you could do all the brushwork before the game is even out, and then when you get the game you can go texturing. You should even be able to compile no problem, as compile tools will no doubt be distributed w/ worldcraft...

You think we'll get to test our levels in game? I mean the engine is done already, they're just using this time to make the levels and stuff for HL2. We should be able to get to compile, I mean, whats the point of having a map editor that won't let you test your maps?
