Semi beginner 3D modeler/texture artist looking for project(s)

I'm afraid I might get bombarded with emails/messages since a lot of teams seem to be in need of staff members. I've been doing 3D modeling/texturing for about a year, but have done mostly rendered stuff and not in-game. My style is more about creating something interesting rather than using all the newest technologies for no reason. I have done a little bit of level building as well. I'm basically looking for a project that will help me to develop my skills and push me to learn more. I haven't really done much player modeling, but if that is what is needed, I'd be willing to try to get it right.

As for a mod I'd like to work on. Well, I really want to avoid cliche overused stuff. I want to stay away from "futuristic" and "fantasy" mods that seem to proliferate gaming communities. I'm not interested in single-player-hero-against-all-the-baddies or multiplayer permuations of team deathmatch (ie, counter-strike, etc...). I really hope this doesn't sound snobbish, but I want to spend my time working on something that is not just a rehash of other ideas that have been done a million times. I'd almost want to do something akin to a virtual art piece or interesting interactive environment.

I also realize that many people might not be into that, and I still want to work on something. So if anyone is working on a project or starting a project that is out of the ordinary or at least different from the most basic gaming cliches, reply to this and maybe we can work something out. Thanks!

Also, if anyone is interested, I can send some examples of work I have done to your email.

for a semi beginner 3d artist with no video game experience? not to sound like an ass but i dont think you need to be worrying about an overflowing mailbox :p

Yeah, tbh I don't think modellers are really in short supply. Now if you were a coder things might be different. Not to undermine your ability, I'm sure you're a far better modeller than I. In fact, and you won't hear this often, you might be in a good position to start a mod of your own as a learning oppurtunity, especially considering that you have:

*A useful modding skill that you'd like to devlop
*Specific ideas of what kind of mod you'd like to make/play
*Coherent typing skills

Good luck anyway!

I realized that sounded kind of lame after I wrote that out. I was just kind of commenting on the huge number of mods I've seen on various sites that need every type of team member, so I thought someone actually volunteering to help might be in trouble ;)

Well hey, if I don't find a mod team to join, and anyone wants to brainstorm with me, I'd be happy to start a new mod.

can we see any previous examples of your work? that usually helps :E

All this fluster for a guy who hasn't even posted a portfolio :|

well a substancial number who advertise themselves dont have the skills anyway. But it never hurts to look for talent

i see no artwork at all deminstrating your ability as a 3d artist? and never say " Semi beginner 3D modeler/texture artist " people these day are not looking for semi-beginners if you have skill , dont say stuff like that it really puts people off!
anyways good luck with any job(s) you might get.

I'm sorry, but I don't want people to get their hopes up and then critisize me for saying "hey guys, I can model!" I have not been doing it very long, but I have some experience. I'm not looking for a group that needs an expert modeller. I have emailed my artwork to people that asked for it, as I'm not looking for people to critique my work who are not looking for someone to model.

All the mods look interesting, but don't stand out as something I would want to work on (except for the incomming mod, but they haven't gotten back to me). No offense is meant at all, more power to you all and I hope you guys get what you need done.

So instead, I'm going to make a final call to see if anyone wants to start a group from scratch. I'm looking for anyone who is willing to work on something that is experimental and pushes the bounds of what a game or mod is/isn't. If interested, send me a PM and we can get started brainstorming. You guys are going to hate me for this, but I haven't even played HL2 yet ;) although I have seen videos and played HL1 a whole bunch. Maybe I'll even start playing it in the mean time.

Thanks.
