Serious Discussion on Infamous CS:S Freezing

Pain in my ass!!

SPECS:

ASUS A7N8X-X
1.5 GIG RAM (PC3200)
ATI 9800XT
Nvidia Chipset
AMD ATHLON XP 2800+
SP2
Latest DirectX

SITUATION:

Random crashes on HL2. First it was the screen going black and the next thing I know my desktop and I were looking at each other in disbelief. I messed with my video settings using ATI's latest ATI Catalyst Control Center (in Smartgart shows my card defaulted to 0x! [is set to 8x in the BIOS]. When I change this to 4x or 8x it finds its way back to 0x after reboot (oh well). The next issue was the game lasted longer but then POOF! The sound would repeat and then the desktop would come back. Now, without any changes made I get a nice combination, the sound repeats (brief echoes), screen goes black, and then I'm back looking at my desktop. Unreal 04 works perfect! What the hell is going on here? Pain in my ass..............

I was having no problems with CS.S before the last update with just stuttering and random memory crashing in HL2, which seemed to be fixed in the previous update but Now on 2 occasions i have had this game freeze and the sound loop thing, the only way out of it without a hard reset was to leave vpu recover ticked in my CC panel so the whole lot would drop back to desktop when it happened,WTF is going on with these games.

Rad 9800 pro 128(With artic cooler)
SB live value
KV7 mobo(bios rev 1.7)

DoomIII,Far Cry,Painkiller,Cron of Riddick all graphically intense games give me not one bit of trouble, but HL2 and CS.S are becoming pain in the ass.

To start off, here are my specs.

Geforce 6800 Ultra
Asus K8V SE Deluxe Via K8T800 AMD Athlon 64 Skt754 DDR ATX Motherboard
On-board Sound
Athlon 64 3200 + Processor
and 1 Gig of RAM (one stick).

Yes I get the damn Crash (and stutters) in Source and 1.6, in both offline and online mode, forcing me to re-boot. Keep posting ideas on how to fix it people, this crash is killing me. Is there something I can do to at least make it so I don't have to restart? I've been hearing about disabling VCU refreshes so that it will at least crash to the desktop to prevent restarting the computer. I can't figure out how to do that though, can the Geforce 6800 Ultra do that? Please help.

Steam thinks it has something to do with the Audio, I've tried just about everything that they have suggested to do, I uninstalled all my codec packs, messed with the DxDiag settings (crashed on whatever accelleration I put it at including no accelleration.)

Haven't tried the -nosound but I will soon.

Would using something besides a SoundBlaster/ On-board sound help? If it will I will immediately go out and buy one, I can't have this frickin error durring scrimmages!

Keep posting ideas on how to fix it guys, PLEASE! Im desperate.

one of the many fixes i tried was dissabling my onboard card and installing a creative live - made no difference

What worked for me

Hey this is what worked for me:

I have ASUS K8V SE Deluxe MB w/ AMD 3000+ 64 bit Processor
512 DDR 400 RAM
ATI Radeon 9800Pro w/ 128 RAM videocard
SB Live Sound Card
Windows XP Pro w/ SP2

I get the freeze after 5-10 min of play with loopin sound and all that jazz. So here is what I did to fix the problem. I had to set my memory to 333 Mhz... down from 400Mhz. After that no more crashing. You can change the speed in the BIOS. I have one memory stick also. Try it and see if it works for you.

ViSH-iX said. "I get the freeze after 5-10 min of play with loopin sound and all that jazz."

i say he's been listening to too much DJ Fresh :p (Vortex Involute - A Nation owns), which is not a good thing imo lol :/

Enuff bout music coz thats not why we are here....

That fix he suggested may work for some, but like someone else earlier suggested (don't ask who coz i cant be arsed going back thru he pages), run a memtest program.

I ran a memtest under someone elses advice and found that one of my ddr sticks is fubar.

Ya, I have same problem. I freeze up in HL2 in the exact same spot every time two seconds after I load it. In counterstrike I can play dust, dust 2, and italy perfectly, but all of the other maps freeze up. It doesn't make any sense. Also for some reason in my BIOS I can't change anything because I have an HP Pavilion. Is there any way I can change my BIOS settings like someone said 2 posts ago?

Nothing at all is freezing on me except for CS:S.

The problem must be with the latest CS:S update. In fact, I can't play CS:S offline either.

Hamer4.0 won't work with the Counter-Strike selected as the game being worked for either.

It's defenently not some hardware problem. It sounds like a typical game/steam/update glitch.
