Setting games to automatically update

Hi all,
I installed the full version of steam last week, with the caches for all games, and it's been working fine until now.
After installation I set CS and HL to automatically update.

After last nights platform update both of these are now set to not automatically update, and when I try to reset them to automatically update the whole thing locks up, and not repaint the GUI.

Anyone else having this problem?

I had a similar thing happening with the initial 500k version - everything would automatically update until one day when they'd set themselves to not update. It'd then ignore any attempts to set to automatic.

So do I need to kill it and reinstall, or just let it stayed locked and hopefully it'll sort its head out?

Oh - sorts its head out after about 20mins.

Have they never heard of forcing messages on the Windows message queue to get processed?
That would let the paint events fire and stop the panic...
