How about we all share our tips for HL2DM? so to start off:
If you are being fired on with SMG from medium distance, pick up a table or desk and crouch with it. When they reload, fire at them.

On overwatch, if you are having trouble with a rocket hog, either snipe them with crossbow or pick up the prox grenades below the ledge and fire them up.

In lockdown it is best to pull the rpg with the manipulator instead of walking to get it (in case you didn't know)

or stick a barrel in the blades and jam it,....its pretty funny to stand behind someone and hold right click (right grav gun) so when they throw there object, you pick it up...then kill them with it. Also if the have an explosive barrel...shoot the barre,. Seem's pretty obvious......

A little trick I like to use is to throw a grenade at my feet, pick it up with the grav gun and launch it. It can be quite devastating once you get the hang of it.

I saw someone jump on a filing cabinet then propell themselves into the sky to land up top in overwatch. how they did it i couldnt tell ya but it was pretty damn sweet regardless.

If you capture the orb from the assualt rifle, and do the gravity jump you go sky high!

This trick can be used to kill the ****** campers!

And crouch and jump a lot of times. Don't even think to go in a rect line!

i like to be firing with a weapon then randomly change to the gravgun and launch something at people...it throws a lot off

a little tip i find very useful and wanted to keep secret but what the hell...if you have a big object with the gravgun and you cant see very well but you know your near someone, navigate round until the persons name tag appears centre screen and fire as soon as it flashes up...80% of the time, you will get the kill

Grav Jump on low gravity servers, if you master it, you can get to the rpg, easily kill the guy, and grab the rpg, without walking through the 2nd floor, also the grav gun is very useful, use it to block shots, and kill with, also grab weapons with it too, better.
Also, Use Sprint.
Target, was that me? you were doing some pretty amazing jumps there too.

yup. I used that trick eariler today and got about 20 kills that way.

On overwatch, stay at the bottom with the gravity gun. I win 90% of the time that way. Assuming it isn't a tiny server.

-Bind all your weapon to keys around your movement keys.
-When using your speed, jump.
-learn the times when items pop up.
-its dm, so theres items, this means you should never camp. find a path around the map that covers lots of ground, and keep going around it like its a race track.
-turn your settings down to get max fps rate

move like a jungle bunny!

Take out your grenade. Toss it with right click, quickly pull your grav gun and either

a) Catch it and throw it after a delay
or
b) Just hit it with the grav gun to launch it fast and far.

I usually use a) because it's more accurate, plus you can time the grenades to get airbursts. b) is only useful at quite long ranges. Notice the grenade doens't hit the ground.

1) Even though the gravity gun is awesome, do not try to use it all the time. There are other weapons in the game for a reason. Make sure you use the other weapons all the time.
2) Always try to get the most powerful weapon. Don't feel like you are being cheap. Valve made HL2DM the way it is for a good reason.
3) When you are engaged with an opponent in a close quarters battle, always be ready to switch to the next best weapon when you are reloading your primary weapon. Good combinations are the revolver and shotgun, and the SMG and pulse rifle.
4) Do not undermine the pistol. Practice your fast clicking. IF you master your clicking skills, you can become devastating with the pistol. I know from experience. I don't even have the best mouse for clicking fast.
5) For regular movement, move from weapon spawnpoint to spawnpoint. It should always be your goal to get the best weapon that will suit your needs the fastest way possible. This way, you aren't stuck with just your starting weapons when you see an enemy.
6) Never crouch. I have never found a reason to, unless I needed to get into a vent.
7) Use the sprint key as much as possible. And jump all the time as well. The hardest targets in deathmatch games are the ones thae look like flailing idiots. But don't feel self-conscience about doing this. Once again, Valve made HL2DM the way it is for a good reason.
8) New idea I just thought of: bind gravity gun to f rather than g. No one really uses the flashlight at all. It's just a key that sometimes gets hit by accident. In fact just inbind the flashlight altogether. Screw it. You need the gravity gun. Doom 3 can have the flashlight.

When you use the pulse cannon part of the assault rifle, it can be handy to catch the orb with your gravity gun the shoot it at someone else. You can do this as many times as you like (as long as you dont hold it for two long) but it gets hard to catch

great tips so far. I kinda hesitated posting to this thread the other day because I want to keep all the goodies to myself but yall got em all out already. :devil:

- catching the orb from the assault rifle is really useful. I love recycling them. You can get some crazy kill streaks with them. When I use the assualt rifle, I usually play in tight spaces (eg. hallways) so there's less room for people to run away and it's easier to catch for use on another victim.

- if you're out of assault rifle ammo but you still have orbs, what I do sometimes is pass it to myself off the wall and search for some1 to kill. You don't have much time to find someone but you can always pass it to yourself again. I do this because shooting it from the rifle..there's a slight delay and by using grav gun, it can be released much quicker

- a basic tip would be to simply learn the maps....weapon spawns..health/armor spawns. Figure out places where you can fight and usually get the upperhand.

- if someone's carrying a big object with grav gun (defending their body with it) and you have the crossbow; you can skip it off the ground. Kinda cool getting those kills. Obviously doesn't work on all surfaces.

-There is no shame in retreating if it denies your opponent a kill and gets you more health.
In fact, most of your effort should be spent in the pursuit of health and armour. Weapons are secondary.
Most of the weapons in the game feature some sort of 1 or 2-hit kill. Once you obtain one of these weapons, your goal is to collect health and armour while simultaneously killing your enemies.

If you're successful at those two tasks, you will pretty much find all the ammo you need by default, dropped by the dead or scattered amid the medkits.

-Never camp for too long. Camping is usually lame, not because it gives cheap kills, but because it is predictable and boring. The last thing you want in a map full of armed people is to be predictable, or a source of irritation.

That doesn't mean that you should never camp, but the trick to effective camping is to keep things random.
Only camp in one room until you run out of ammo for one gun, and no longer than two minutes. Even then, you should change your position in the room after each kill, if possible.
Predictable and overused camping spots will allow opponents to hit you with orbs and grenades without even needing to see you, and make you generally easier to spot.

-Most of the points about camping can also be said about weapon selection. Use whatever works best, but never use it long enough to become predictible. I find the best strategy is to only use a gun until it runs out of ammo.

-Be stealthy as possible. Snipe, take cover, get real close without them seeing. If your opponent can't see you, they can't shoot you.

-For team deathmatch, pick a person and follow them. Make sure you are never alone.

In dm_lockdown the area around the assault rifle is a great place to stay near. Theres obviously the assault rifle with 2 alt-fire shots and 2 alt fire shots for the SMG near the hallway. That's enough firepower to take out damn near anyone and shooting people coming down that hallway is easy prey, not to mention the close quarters are great for the assault rifle's alt-fire to bounce around. Also there are 4 health packs and one suit armor pack.

q=smg e=magnum f=rpg c=assultrifle x=shotgun z=crossbow 2=pistol v=nades g=gravity gun

i tried to match my cfg as close as i can to my q3 one :)

The key binding is one of the most important things to set up. I'm left handed so all mine have had to change from default, so I have:
[ = reload
] = zoom
' = grav
ENTER = Use
CTRL = Jump
SHIFT = Sprint
Mid mouse = crouch
WheelUp and Down = Switch weapons
I use arrow keys for mvmt, so you should be able to move around reload or switch to grav gun at the same time.

Never crouch? Are you kidding!?

Everytime I am engaged in the oh so common close range SMG battle, here is my strategy:

Always aim for the head. (Kinda obvious) But never take your aim off it. Ever. I don't care if someone sprays a picture of a naked lady.
Strafe and sprint back and forth randomly. AND forward in back.

I find that it is a good strategy to strafe literally right into them, and crouch (as if giving him a... err.. nevermind) This works wonders. They will think "aHH!?" and it's harder for them to aim down than it is for you to aim up.

I NEVER lose smg battles.

And, ALWAYS be sprinting. My pinky is resting on the shift key at all times. Sprint whenever possible. Really. Your goal is to keep your AUX power at zero at all times.

I am strongly against camping. I am ALWAYS moving. I don't care whether you are hiding, waiting for a weapon to spawn, or sniping. Always be on the move.

Get used to the rythym of the revolver. (time between shots) You want to crouch right when your opponent shoots. That way he has no time to re-adjust his aim. Also, like I said, get right up in his face. It sounds crazy, but it works. Right up in his face and crouch. Rotate around him. Confuse him. Always keeping your aim on the head, and firing whenever possible.

If you have a stubborn camper on your hands, advertise it. Use that chat function. Tell everyone that Billy Bob is camping the R-Launcher. Now suddenly everyone is against him. You win. Or everyone will ignore that spot, and he will be forced to come out. (No people = no kills)

You may disagree, and I may be wrong with this next tip...
Look at my name. Vegeta897. That's the name I use in DM. It will mislead your opponents. Choose a name that only an 8 year old would use. That way your opponent will think "Haha, this kid will be no problem." OR if you kill him he will get mad. Being angry will greatly reduce your preformance.

Well those are my tips. Wow they sure sound wacky heh. But seem to do excellent keeping those in mind. Hope it helps everyone :)

I'm glad you said that. It's so funny confusing people. Even funnier when they start to copy what you are doing to them, except they are not used to it and die anyway. heh.

I have found that the gravity gun and nade combo is a complete success. Set gravity gun to 'f,' so you can get it out easier. I'm probably going to set nades to 'c' eventually, and see how switching between those two works. All I know is that using 'f' for gravity gun is a lot more easier than using 'g.'
When doing the gravity gun + nade combo, you have to learn the timing of the grenade, so you can almost always kill whomever it is you want to kill.

Not crazy, but glitchy. Since you have no head hit box when you crouch it's almost impossible to kill someone who is crouching right infront of you. It really has nothing to do with being harder to aim, it should be exactly to opposite. Dont care if you use it (although it does get annoying), but I wouldn't recommend getting used to it, since Valve will certainly fix it (at least sometime in the next two years...CS hitbox issues weren't fixed until 1.3, and they had been know at least since beta 6.)

Also if someone strafes right near you, just whap out the shotty and blam.

Dead. :)

Shotgun ownes. :) Is it just me or does sec. fire seem to be just as accurate as primary?

It's not just you :)

gg earlier bro.. sorry for my suckage, I've been naff in AG/HL2DM/Op4 all day ;(

i was trying the grav jumps, got the jist of it but it doesnt seem very practical in a dm game. Or am I missing something? Grenade cooking rules though.

WySiWyG you ain't missing nothing.. it's not practical at all, just funny :p

I managed the orb jump first time and that is mad. Can't do it again though. What's the exact way to do it?

Reply to my PM :E

Exact way.. not entirely sure.. run over a VPhysics object, and hit sprint as you near the edge, and on the edge, look down and phys-fire :)

I don't do it much, so I may not be accurate :p

i just played a match where me and the other guy must have switched combine balls with eachother 3 or 4 times each time it was shot...
so if you dont like dieing in instantly get faster reflexes,

I got a couple of nice grav jumps to work. On Lockdown, you can jump up from the floor to the crossbow by using the piping in the room opposite the crossbow. Its strange how different objects (even of a similar mass) give diferent results. The plasma ball- seesaw thing is cool as well.

The best ways to stay alive are mostly already listed. When i play any server in half life dm i always carry a sawblade. I don't kill with it. If a fight gets ugly i use it to escape using air surfing. In high grav its useful to boost my bhop or speedskate by a lot. You can jump around at 800 VEL for a good while if you know your stuff. You really need to know your surrounding so study maps you like. once you know the position of all the weps you like and health and armor your main goal is to continuously move gathering them. Also you have to judge the skill of your enemy. Most people find out pretty quick that you cant get me with orbs cause i catch them all. Same story with nades. Knowing that use whatever wep your most comfortable with and take them out quick while avoiding weapons they can catch and use against you. Always work to better yourself. Even if you know all the tricks your still not the best. The way you employ all your skills makes you a good player.

To be more accurate with the magnum zoom in with your HEV suit to aim long distance shots, then quickly release the zoom to fire.
