I'll tell you once I stop giggling like a girl at that sentence :)

.. ok. well HDRI and fresnel effects will do the trick straight away.. hang on, see if I can get one done before my 15 minutes runs out, and the time starts..... now!

haha :D lol i know it sounded really dirty when i was typing it :D but i was having fun damnit!

what is the difference between a grocery bag and michael jackson?

one is white, plastic and harmful to children. the other holds groceries.

haha :D

ne ways tell me damn!

try using raytrace or download some exsternal plugins.

raytrace is on ... lol hence all the reflections and shit :S

oops forgot i hadn't posted it.

so yeah, HDRI reflection and fresnel for the reflection angle as I suggested does the trick

looks cool.. kind more glass like though but still ill have a go at that my glass always comes out not to clear

just gotta find the buttons now :S

Looks like a mirror. It's awesome. I like when you make one ball and put in a block of wood. With weird things surrounding it to reflect it....what did I just say?

this is a thin glassy surface so you can compare the difference, the very smooth shiny almost mirror like surface on a spherical object can give the impression of it being almost glass like but you can see the difference when compared to each other.

wo that looks frigging sweet

have u got ne tutorials that will tell me how to do it??

you don't really need a tutorial, it really is just a case of setting up a HDRI for the reflection and then control that with a fresnal effect/incidence angle whatever it happens to be called in your software.

Basically what that does is (using a sphere as an example)

the area of a sphere facing you directly, reflects less than the area's of a sphere the closer to a 90 degree angle from your view

for transparent surfaces, its more transparent facing you directly, and gradually less as it gets closer to 90 degree's paralel to your view

course you can get more realism with tiny microbumps in the surface, since no shiny metal ball is 100% perfectly shiny

If you can't/don't want to use HDR, you can use very luminous single polygons off camera to get a bright reflection shape, say from a window.

How did he get it to reflect a whole room? The fresnal effect is used most importantly on water right?

fresnal effect is used with a lot of things, but at varying degree's, transparent surfaces, reflective surfaces anything really, even if its not noticable it never hurts to add a small amount of it to help improve the quality

I'm guessing Murray used Lightwave (I did for those two I posted) in which case it has a handy plugin for HDR images that wraps specially made ones onto an infinately large imaginary sphere around your entire scene. IMO I think Lightwave has good support for HDRI.

Paul Devbec(sp?) used it to great effect for his Fiat Lux short, he did that in Maya.

I used Max 5, and there is a tutorial on splutterfish.com (go to dowloads, free plugins and download the HDR plugin and then read the tutorial)

argh Max, the enemy ;) j/k

I haven't got around to trying HDRI in Max yet, any useful features?

I'm a HDRI n00bie, i wouldn't know a useful feature if it jumped up and slapped me in the face ;)

hehe

you tried HDRIshop yet? Very handy and free program for creating and manipulating HDR images, useful if you have an image that isn't HDR which you want to fake a version from with photoshop and put them all together in a neat single compatible file.

Don't suppose you know how to get incidence angle/fresnel working in Max do you? I'm afraid I've little working experience of its material editor, never really had a call to use it beyond basic UV mapping and it cropped up a while back with sidewinders dock scene, as he was using Max I wasn't quite sure what he should do to get it working correctly

im even nmore of a n00bie never even heard of it hehe

ut im gunna lean coz it looks sweeeeet

i just downloaded that plug in... is it gunna work on max 5.. says its for max 3 and max 4

Yeah it works for max 5

I used HDR shop to make that ball, pretty cool program

cool ill give it a go in a wile :/
gotta do basterd homeowrk :S
