Shogun 2: Total War

I'm pretty much sold. That looked damn good.

On GameTrailers it's called a cinematic gameplay trailer, I guess that means it's cinematic but using the game engine, or what?

Anyway, I might get this if it has GOOD AI for the battles.

Don't hold your breath. I guarantee it'll be pretty much exactly the same. They've proven time and time again that they do not make the changes significant enough, and don't eradicate the problems.

Agreed 100%. I lost interest after MTW2 because of exactly that. Looks nice though.

Looks like all they've done is update the graphic.

Of course, can't officially pass a judgement over a short trailer...

The developers really need to pay attention the mod community. Medieval and Empire were unpolished turds when released but are pretty good games with the right mods.

Man, I'd love to get this game, but I'm having trouble enough as it is keeping up with Empire's complexity. I found Rome just fine though, so maybe this will be more like Rome.

Yeah Im hoping the same thing, more RTS - less civilization. \o/

At least in empire you don't have the pope breathing down your neck like in Medieval.

**** the pope. I've never bothered myself with his holiness.

I hope I can setup huge AI vs AI battles in this so I don't have to worry about managing the battle and can just watch the purdy graphics!

Looks very promising. That chain rout worried me slightly, reminded me of the bad old days of Rome, but otherwise I was quite impressed. The graphics and animations were absolutely breathtaking, and was that general speaking authentic Japanese? Rock.

P.S.: Did you guys think they could have featured a little more unit diversity, or am I just nitpicking?

Nitpicking, and chain route was awesome if you used it to your advantage. There were several times in Rome where I was outnumbered and outmatched, but able to win due to using shock tactics and scaring the bejesus out of the enemy until they routed.

Sonic cycle meet the Total War cycle, Total War cycle meet the Sonic cycle, I think you two are going to really hit it off.

Total War cycle?

The one where I get really excited for the next Total War game, get it and love it and play it for 50 hours then only play it sporadically while waiting for the next one to come out?

p.s. I love the civilization part of Total War; it's like a lite version of a Paradox game without me having to micro every the **** thing.

Eh?

Personally I find the Civilization part in TW far more annoying than that of Paradox grand-strategy games, because you have to micromanage your cities with what to build etc(AI does an incredibly ridiculously bad job), manage building of individual units to make the armies etc.

funny, I remember making a thread about this a while ago, no one thought it would happen. :D

I don't remember anyone here being skeptical of Shogun 2...

That is actually what I like best about the series. And the reason Empire was a bit too big for me: too many cities to manage. I am glad Shogun II is on a smaller scale.

^Same. I prefer smaller tactical engagements.

Shogun 2 looks like it's the game that'll bring me back to the series after my last purchase being the Medieval 2 expansion.

How much smaller? Like, in comparison to Rome lets say. I never really got far into Empire so I don't know what kind of scale it was on.

New assassin video, shows campaign map graphics.

Great little cutscene, I loved the humour of those in previous total wars. And that rotatable 3D campaign map is sex. S, E, X. Sex. Battles still look the same old same old though...

Can anyone make me good at Napoleon? I'm still interested in the series, but I really just sucked at that game. Even when the game measures your defeat / wins for you, I was never too sure how acceptable my losses were and kind of just didn't get get how to actually progress my army across the campaign map...

And I dreaded naval battles, but I suspect they were just fundamentally poor.

Empire's campaign map was about three times as big as Rome's. Judging by the screenshots and videos that have been released, I'd say the Shogun II map is even smaller than Rome (or Medieval for that matter). I preferred the mapsize of the Kingdoms expansion for M:TW2.

Nothing beats the duel between two diplomats back in Empire Total War.

Ex: guy shoots himself in the face when the pistol didn't fire during the duel.

Ooh so you can choose how to develop agents and generals rather than the random traits? Nice.

The demo is out. It is a (quite big) tutorial that teaches you the basics of everything except for naval warfare. You can also play a historical battle. I really like the look & feel of it. The UI has been much improved, they nailed the Japanese art style right down to the unit cards and the graphics are luscious. The battlefield gameplay is back to the tried rock-paper-scissors of archers, melee dudes and cavalry, but with added bells & whistles from Empire like field of fire. I really enjoyed it. This is most likely gonna be a day one sale for me.

It's almost 6 god damn gigs, holy shit.

Cant download at the moment. How does the AI play?

Huh, according to wiki the game's AI is designed around the principles of The Art of War, and I wonder the reason the demo is so big is because it comes with the full game encyclopedia (again according to wiki). The latter is pretty interesting, for me.

demo was sweet, felt the campaign interface could be made clearer though.

6gig for a demo seems a bit extream. It must of downloaded most of the game. But some crazy locked version

It looks like we are (at least) back to the Rome / Medieval scale. The demo doesn't show the whole campaign map though. I'd personally prefer the size of the M2:TW Kingdoms maps.
