Shooting Range

bing!
my dad owns 3 shotguns (all over under) and a .22 rifle (pump)
-12 gauge synergy
-12 gauge
-20 gauge

we use the shotguns for skeet/sometimes trap
skeet is pretty fun i guess
but i would never go hunting :x

i personally liked a range that i went to where you put a waterbottle out and go back and shoot at it with a rifle
exploding water!

(and yes, you can get a .22 pump rifle, but its a bit hard to, i dont reccomend it though, it jams quite a bit)

I've fired numerous guns...20 and 12 guage shotguns, numerous 22's, winchester .30-.30, colt model 1911 .45, beretta 9mm.

Only gun we own is a Ruger 10/22 though.

Done paintballing and also have a strange urge to go to an archery range

I love firing guns. If i were you i would get:
Ruger 10/22: The most modable semi-auto .22 rifle ever. Fun to shoot, good balance and accurate. I wouls also buy a good quality laminate thumbhole target stock.

Ruger P-89 9mm: My dad owns it, and i love firing it. Looks smooth and i have never had it jam on me.

Colt .45 1911: A good old fasioned accurate gun. It is a classic, but the .45 kick may be too much for you. If you can rent from your range, then rent it and buy a box of .45.

Remington 700: Ours is a .30-06 and recoil is very harsh. But, it is very accurate, the .30-06 has a good trajectory.

Marlin or Winchest .30-30 Lever Action: The classic "Cowboy Gun." Most of the new Marlins and Winchesters are accurate, and the speed of the second and third shot is second only to semi-auto actions.

heh...we bought a 10/22 two weeks ago. I want a 1000 round clip.

I agree with you about the .45, the kick will freaking break your wrist, it's that bad.

Seems as if you've listed about every gun I have. The .30-.30 I've shot is an 1894 model (from 1894).

So have you come to a decision around anything you'd like? (or at least have your eye on?)

You could also buy the gun and have your buddy hold it if your wife doesn't like it being in the house, then get it from him when range time comes and such if you aren't using it for home protection.

Another thing, when your child is of age, have them enrolled in the professional gun safety course (whether you have one at that time or not) It'll do them good in the future, and if they do ever come across one, they'll know in the future-

Stop
Don't touch
Leave the area
Tell an adult

NRA's child tenets :]

I haven't really come to a decision because I don't have the money to buy a gun right now. So, I've got plenty of time to visit a few gun stores and look around online.

Well, don't rush it either - it is a fairly hefty investment, and you want to get one *you* like, not necessarily the one all your buddies are telling you to get. For example, many people will try to sell you on stopping power, but since you said you'd just be target shooting that's not an issue at all.

I personally find rifles much more satisfying than shotguns - more precise and controlled, "not as clumsy and random as a [shotgun]" :) With enough practice, I'm able to confidently take down Coke cans at about...ooh, trying to remember a range from estimating from memory won't do anyone any good, but it was a respectable distance. I personally have a .20 caliber semi-auto and .38 bolt-action, and my parents have two pump-action 12 guages. Fortunately I've never had to use them for home defense, so a plus there too. :)
