Should I buy it? I've never played it. Heard grand and marvelous things about it.

Have patience, get into the control and battle system, and don't be shy with getting into long conversations with all the characters, and you'll have a grandiose time.

I just got KOTOR2 in the post today. It doesn't work. Can't find a way to fix it .

Strangely enough, recently finishing Mass Effect has actually made me want to play KOTOR again. I'm not sure if I even have my old copy anymore, if I don't I might consider buying this. I'd definitely buy KOTOR2 if it becomes available at a similar price, I never got around to playing that one.
