That's the point. People don't tip bartenders here. It seems really alien.

heh as a bartender even the waiters tip you in north america ..they pour the drinks for the wait staff ..they get a percentage of tips ..so do bus boys

btw my best night I made $350 in tips (christmas eve) ...mostly from my regulars

The best you can hope for in the UK is not being thrown up on.

the resturaunt wouldn't be able to afford this. It ends up being mutually beneficial.

They could afford to pay you a living wage though, if they wanted to, right? That is what I mean about it being a funny way to conduct business...

Ohh, no no no, you're quite wrong. I get at least one tip, usually two or three, every bar shift I work. The clientelle where I work are by no means affluent, at all. And in turn when I go out drinking I nominally tip if I think the barperson is doing their job really well. It's not a lot of money, but it's an acknowledgment. Actually it's probably a sign of 'professional' respect.

Maybe it's the friendly Midlands vs the selfish wealthy southeast? ;) ;)

Another thing I don't understand is the 20% rule. So, you pay $30 for food, but also an extra $6 for tipping? It's somewhat forced, they should just cahrge you $36 and give more money to the service worker. The cost of the food also iuncludes the service pay.

Usually then the waiter doesn't get to see ANY of the money.

Bosses would take it all for themselves
