Shouldn't it have gone gold by now?

Games go gold roughly 1 month before their releases. There's only 18 days left and it's still no go. =\
 
Well the original went gold around 15 days before release or so.
 
It doens't take a whole month in the Gold process. There is still time as long as its before the 20th(preferably the 15th).
 
I didn't even know about HalfLife1 before release so.. I just walked by one day and was all... hmmm why not...

Well I hope it'll go gold soon.

I was the same way. I went into CompUSA and saw it playing on one of the comps and was amazed. Of course this was a month or two after it was released so it looked amazing. To bad I had to run it in software mode for awhile til I bought a new comp. :\
 
No, supposed to be 2 weeks before official release.. well see though..
 
Monday is probably the earliest they'd declare it finish (they'll work as much as they can) if its coming out for the 30th. If we don't hear gold sometime next week, I'm going to be much more skeptical about the 30th release.

There's a lot going on right now with Steam and all the benchmark BS. They wouldn't declare it gold before the new Steam is out anyway. I'd say give em another week.
 
Exactly, if they can't even friggin release Steam when they said they would, what makes you think they'll hit a 9/30 release date for HL 2? At this point, I am very doubtful they'll hit the date.

True. I mean they had 5 years to work the game out. They probably chose a date which would be far passed what they needed just incase. I think they may hit it.

3 boxes actually (for each sku). Plus at least 2 cd's per box. And a manual and cheapy ad(s) from Sierra.

wrong (well not wrong...ur just forgetting how important Steam is supposed to be), i think ur forgetting how HL2 and Steam are supposed to work together to not only allow subscriptions, patches/bug fixes, but also provide the anti-cheat for MP..

so to say HL2 involves a box and a cd and not mean Steam 1.0 running free of problems is shortsighted to say the very least..

the longer it takes for Steam client to be released, the longer it will take HL2 to go gold and ultimately be released..

my opinion: if Steam is not released on September 12th (Friday), then i feel theres a real possibility of a HL2 delay.. look at above reasons for this feeling.

steam only has to be up before sept. 30th. other than that it has absolutely nothing to do with hl2 except that it's an unnessary neccesity to play the game.
 
When a company states that a game has "Gone Gold," it's almost always a marketing gimmick. It's to remind you that, hey, said game is coming out in a few weeks. I'd better keep my eye on store shelves.

Plenty of games never get announced as "Going Gold." Almost no console games ever do, for example. It is not mandatory for a company to announce such a thing, and it's usually done by the publishing company for reasons I've stated above.

There isn't much of a reason for Valve to say, "Hey, the game is Gold now," other than to reassure people that it's still hitting stores on Sept. 30th. That's not to say that they won't announce it going Gold within the next couple days, and that's not to say that they won't announce a delay soon either. It's entirely possible that they won't say anything and it'll show up in stores like they've said it would for 4 months now.

The point is, though, announcing that something has "Gone Gold" is an unnecessary marketing ploy. It's not a mandatory part of development.

from a gamer's point of view, ya its "uncessarry" to play the game.. but if ur Valve, u want Steam working in tip-top shape before HL2 is released because of the aforemnetioned subscriptions and anti-cheat etc..

and ya i realize theres 18 days before September 30th (12 if u count only business days) but u see Steam was supposed to be released yesterday.. and it didn't happen so then tonite and again it hasn't happened.. if Steam 1.0 keeps getting delayed, it just doesn't look good for HL2's September 30th release..

dude, you can't correct my mispelling with another mispelling. you dumbass. anyways it's very unlikely that steam will be delayed for another 2 weeks considering the dedicated server is released but i guess you never know

first of all, i was not trying to correct u.. i don't really care if u mis-spell a word as long as u get ur point across.. i put quotes around the word because u chose to use it to describe how un-important Steam seems to according to u.. but the reality is, Valve won't go forward with a HL2 release if Steam is not ready..

secondly, it was mighty quick of u to call me a dumbass.. since u made the assumption, really u are the dumbass :)

i can call whoever the hell i want a dumbass :p and by the looks of it steam is ready considering i'm installing it on my computer right now
 
Well, with this new release of Steam, it has definitely boosted the anticipation and hopes of those waiting for the 9/30 release for HL 2.
 
.....mabey at most it will be a week or two late....

Not a big deal.
 
well showing the dedication they showed tonight with steam (staying at work till midnight) just to get it out, I can proudly say "I Believe!"
