I'm pretty out the loop with speakers right now, i know basically the 2.0/2.1/5,7 etc setup thing with speaker numbers and a sub-woofer, but my speakers have packed up tonight and if everyone could link me to some of the speakers they like, or have bought that would be useful.

My speakers are knackered, but the sub-woofer works fine, however i don't mind buying a new SF with some nice 2.0 speakers. Any 2.0, 2.1, 5.0, 5.1 speakers would be really useful to know about. Oh and £50 is my budget!

Help would be muchly appreciated folks.

£50 is not a lot of money. Why not live on headphones for a while and really get a sound system you can live with for 10, or maybe more, years?

I did that (but it cost me £670). Not only do I have a kick ass system, but it will also act as a part of my soon-to-be surroundsound system. The current amp will work as a pre-amp to the receiver giving the front speakers a great boost on top of the power the receiver gives me.

But then again, you might not be interested in stuff like that.

I'm not into computer speakers but the same rule of thumb still apply for them. Go and listen! If you have a store near you, go and have a listen. If you think they sound good and have a good price, then its a-ok right?

I have the logitech Z-2300 2.1 speakers. I don't watch a lot of movies and with the budget I had I wanted a good sounding 2.1 set rather than weak 5.1 speakers.

I listen to a lot of music too. Music is stereo so it will play 2.1 but not surround sound. Unless the drivers tell it to copy the front sounds to the rear.

Yeah, just go to the store and test them out. I know there is a good setup at the local retail store here. Even has a hookup where you can bring your cd player, mp3 player and play your music on their speakers.

Get an amp and speakers from your local 2nd hand dealer/op shop - shop around for a while and you'll get a set up that blows the living daylights out of any new set up. Im running an early 90's technics amp and 3 way speakers that i got for around $100 and $120 NZD respectively (about 150 USD)

Kep in mind this will land you a beast of a stereo aswell - they dont make em like they used to ;)

I've a pair of Desktop Bose speakers.

I did that too. Older bookshelf speakers will sound way better than a 'hyped' 2.1 set. I got 2 old Sony bookshelf speakers from my dad, and a while ago I got another pair for €20 at my local second hand store. Now I use those 4 speakers for my front and center channels. Combined with a custom built subwoofer, they are perfect for music.

Pff you all are happy with $50 speaker systems, and I just realised I'm about to spend $450 on a subwoofer! And I even have to build it myself!

Thank you for some of your suggestions, although i feel some of you are missing the point a bit. I only really want computer speakers, to listen to some music and allow sound for games and films to....be heard, thats it really. I'm not a huge sound freak, just some decent speakers for my computer!

Asus and Jack, thank you for those 2, i will look into them.

Qonfused, could you show me a specific model you mean?

(Majy, i have retreated back to headphones for the time being, i don't like it!)

If you're looking for a good set of cheap 2.1 speakers, I have the Creative Inspire T3000. I read a few reviews online prior to buying it, and they are generally better than the comparable Altec Lansing VS.2121 and Logitech X-230. A good review of the three can be read here.

I have used these speakers for music and games for the last year or so and I couldn't be happier. For 40 USD or so, they put out plenty of sound, with superb bass and very good midrange and highs. I say A++ as far as bang for your buck (or pound :cheese:) goes.

Everything you see in that picture I have siting around me. They are really nice speakers and the subwolfer is by far the best one I have ever had. They are about $300 US Dollars

Those are great speakers. They were my first step in HiFi audio. Although I think the subwoofer is pretty weak. If you like a good base, I suggest the Inspire T2900. They are the same but it has a better subwoofer.

Actually I have no idea if those are still available. If not, the t3000 is still a good choice.

Unfortunately, they are not. I actually wanted to get the T2900 when I was shopping for the set, but they had just been phased out. I picked up the T3000 from NewEgg for $30 after rebates and haven't looked back. They're suppossedly the successor to the T2900. A friend had the T2900 and I can't tell too much difference. Maybe a bit weaker in the bass like you said, but not too noticeable.

Subwolfer?! :O What is this beast you speak of?! :p

Logitech X-530 is a very nice budget 5.1 system, they can really put out some sound. Very, very cheap too. ;)
