'Magic Mushrooms' May Permanently Alter Personality

Just one strong dose of hallucinogenic mushrooms can alter a person's personality for more than a year and perhaps permanently, a new study finds.

People given psilocybin, the compound in "magic mushrooms" that causes hallucinations and feelings of transcendence, demonstrated a more "open" personality after their experience, an effect that persisted for at least 14 months. Openness is a psychological term referring to an appreciation for new experiences. People who are more open tend to have broad imaginations and value emotion, art and curiosity.

This personality warp is unusual, said study researcher Katherine MacLean, because personality rarely changes much after the age of 25 or 30. (In fact, one recent study found that by first grade our personalities are set pretty much for life.)

I personally did Shrooms three times and each time was much different from the last. Overall I think it helped me open up more as I was much more introverted when I was in my late teens and afterwards I became a bit extroverted

If you smoke a lot of crystal it opens you up too

On a serious note, a lot of things open you up and can alter your personality permanently. It doesn't take chemicals to alter one's personality, any experience can have the effect.

I had a major political shift back five to six years ago and that has had a huge affect on my personality. Though really I think it was my personality and outlook on life that shifted my political views... but whatever caused my personality shift I'm fairly certain it's going to be a permanent thing.

What I'm saying is any powerful experience or cascade of events in ones life can permanently alter ones personality. The only things that would be scary or surprising would be the things that permanently ones personality unwillingly. Nearly all personality changes I can think of would be done willfully, and not by a restructuring of the brain by processes outside of ones consciousness.

Did I make any sense? I don't think I made any sense.

To be fair, everything you experience changes your personality. Equating meth to psilocin is just crazy though.

Browsing Halflife2.net may permanently alter your personality too.

Why? Honestly why do you think it's crazy? It really does change your perspective on a lot of things homie!

Because they act on completely separate chemical pathways in the brain. It's basically the same as equating the effects of heroin and caffeine.

Yea, I mean any crazy happy experience will make you a happy outgoing experience and then if you have a long period of bad luck/bad things happen to you then you will be angry, unhappy etc..

Your brain is elastic so to speak...I guess the difference between what you guys are talking about in experiences in one's life altering personalities is different than someone taking drugs because well - taking drugs is directly putting foreign chemicals in the brain and depending on what kind of trip you have that chemical can alter your brain pattern in that way for a while or forever apparently.

I'll stick to alcohol and weed :D lol...I believe I'd have a terrible trip if I were to take shrooms or LSD or something ****ed up like that. Hell, I even freak out when smoking weed.

You know what else can alter your personality? The Pygmalion Effect. It's when you become the person you are perceived to be. Look it up.

I'm a girl!

Blowing your mind may do that.

So that's why Stern is still old even post-Incident?

I find the people you spend your time with change your personality too.

When I first moved down here, I worked with a bunch of fatties who ate horrendously bad lunches, went out for massively oversized curries and drank 12 pints every time we went out. And who were quite lazy and negative at work. I became exactly the same way.

Now I work in a highly professional and self-disciplined environment, and go to a martial arts club with ultra-fit health nuts. This has had completely the opposite effect on me. In fact I'm entirely confident I could work for myself now and work just as hard as at the moment where my boss sits opposite me. I definitely couldn't have said that two years ago, I would just slack off too much. Nor could I have EVER imagined in a million years that I would either enjoy weightlifting or be bothered to do it four times a week.

If there's something you don't like about yourself, go throw yourself in an environment where the opposite is the norm, and soon enough it will be for you too.

Of course not!

is just that since the quote was about people changing whit time, and you just pointed that you where a girl,I thought it mean you where a man before

or is about that you are now a lesbian?

Personality is fluid to begin with, it's ever changing. Everything you do has an influence upon your personality, whether you are conscious of it or not. As far as shrooms go, psychedelics can bring about profound shifts in perception, and the user will typically experience emotional, intellectual, and spiritual intensity which they experience in everyday life only very rarely. So it's only natural that using such substances can have significant effects upon a person's persona.
I typically get along much better with people who have taken psychedelics than people who haven't.

If I had even an ounce of knowledge as to what the so-called 'Incident' was, I'd be able to joke around with you and riomhaire. However, my shit won't be given because I don't give a shit.

Wonderful. Not cliche at all.

I know someone who did Shrooms once. Dude thought he was a Toblerone.

you probably know a lot of people who have done shrooms

I think what he was implying was that there are probably a lot of people you know who've done shrooms, but you may not know it.

In which case, yeah. Probably right.

I thought he was implying Stylo was a drug user and also therefore a terrible person.

I thought he was implying that I was talking out my ass because usually when I say "I know someone who <insert relevant fact here>" on this forum it's likely at least one person will be all like "Oh, well how convenient you know someone who <insert relevant fact here>." You know, like knowing a lot of people who've done a lot of stuff is somehow impossible.

I don't even know what anyone is implying anymore. Wait, am I being hit on?

Who has done MDMA here? A few friends tried it over the weekend. 2 of them were loving life but one of them got extremely cold and clammy and generally had a bad trip and just went to bed.

I was reminded of this thread when I saw my brother's receipt for Arby's. They have a "'Shroom and Swiss" sandwich. Why the **** would you call a mushroom and swiss 'shroom and swiss'. A: Mushroom and Swiss sounds better and B: people are just going to think of drug mushrooms.
