Are you depressed? Feeling low? Having a hard time remembering the good times and positive experiences in your life?

Then you just might need...

MAGIC MUSHROOMS!

A drug derived from magic mushrooms could help people with depression by enabling them to relive positive and happy moments of their lives, according to scientists including the former government drug adviser, Professor David Nutt.

Two studies, for which scientists struggled to find funding because of public suspicion and political sensitivity around psychedelic drugs, have shed light on how magic mushrooms affect the brain.

Interesting enough, right?

A second study, to be published on Thursday in the British Journal of Psychiatry, gave volunteers cues to remember positive events in their lives such as their wedding or performance in a play. Their recollection became very vivid. "It was almost as if rather than imagining the memories, they were actually seeing them," said Carhart-Harris. "This could be very useful in psychotherapy, for instance in people with depression who find it very difficult to remember good times and are stuck in the negative."

The team are now hoping to do a further study which will involve giving psilocybin to depressed people who are undergoing psychotherapy, in the hope that it will allow them to relive times of past happiness.

So, okay. Seriousness time. I lead a pretty strict anti-drugs life. The only thing I do is drink alcohol, so I'm not exactly straight-edge but as far as tobacco and recreational drugs, I don't touch them.

Show of hands, any HL2 forumites had any experiences with Shrooms? I've read about studies into them before and how there's a distinct lack of negative consequences for taking them. I've also had only one person in my life describe an experience with Shrooms to me and basically, according to his sister, he laid on the floor for a couple of hours because he thought he was a Toblerone. I'm interested in anyone else's personal experiences, whether they've taken them or know someone who has.

If so, what's the dealio, HL2.net?

TL;DR Magic Mushrooms - Discuss

The problem with using drugs to 'help' people with depression is that it doesn't actually do anything about the depression, it just makes them forget their problems for a while, and then they become reliant on such drugs and that's when addiction starts.

Personally I stay away from tobacco/drugs. I've tried a cigarette before, and synthetic cannabis on one occasion but I wont be doing it again, neither experiences were particularly pleasant. I can't see myself ever wanting to do shrooms.

Well, I don't think they're going to use it as a "cure" per se, (if using it at all) but as like an aid. But yeah, I myself smoked weed once in my teens and it just did nothing for me. I didn't feel more relaxed or chilled out or... anything really. Nothing different. It was pretty pointless. The other people with me at the time seemed to be enjoying it though.

It could work as a relief, no doubt, but so can alcohol, and that's hardly recommendable. Not to say they are equal in harm or anything like that, but resorting to drugs is just a way to push the problem aside for a few hours, rather than solving it.

It seems like it could also easily have the opposite effect of having people vividly remember terrible moments in their life.

I drink every now and then as a social thing, only been legitimately drunk twice. I tried cigarettes once as a young kid (like 10 or 12), they sucked and I got caught by my parents lol. Never even tried anything else. I just don't see any reason, I have a good time without them, so whats the point?

Most people who 'tried weed once' did it wrong. If you see smoke when you breath out then you're getting nothing. Just thought I'd mention. Far as I know shrooms are fun recreationally, but there's not much evidence as of yet of significant medical impacts. I do know it's nigh impossible to OD on them, though.

Pretty much my stance.

Exactly what the guys I was with said at the time. They'd all been smoking it for a while. Not to say weed is ineffective or anything but I personally just didn't really get much from the experience. Could just be me.

Well, from the way the article is worded I think it's less of an "escape" thing and more a recollection thing. Say during psychotherapy for depression the shrink is all like "So, I want you to think of some positive experiences from your life" ... memories etc. I think that's where it would be employed to help the memories more vivid.

But then there's what Krynn said as well about remembering terrible experiences vividly. I dunno what things they'd have in place for that occurrence.

I'm not strictly depressed, but I have a hard time remembering a pure happy memories

It could work as a relief, no doubt, but so can alcohol

Oddly enough, drinking alchohol actually makes me upset

I've done mushrooms, acid, and salvia and with all of them I never even came close to thinking I was a toblerone. I could MAYBE see that if you took a fat hit of strong salvia or a bunch of hits of acid, but never with mush. All it does is make what's already there change (breathing walls, shifting colors, shifting patterns, etc).

Anyways, I don't think it helps depression. I've done it many times and I've had my share of bad trips. If anything the bad trips make you feel WAY worse than you already would (almost walked into traffic once on a bad trip because I just wanted it to end. Not good. Although I think that was because I just got broken up with at the time because I've never had a bad trip THAT bad since). Plus I don't think I would ever give someone with severe depression mushrooms. You're just asking for a bad trip (although when the trips were over I didn't feel worse or better, just another experience).

One of the worst drugs out there.

I'm interested in anyone else's personal experiences, whether they've taken them or know someone who has.

Had them a handful of times, all good. The first time I got a small dose due to poor preparation. Saw a large red orb inbedded in the floor, reminiscent of an old swollen sun. This may have been related to a recurring theme experienced on psychedelics, relating to scale, perceiving the similarities between atoms to solar systems to galaxies.

Another time with a friend, everything was imbued with undulating, shimmering excitement. Everything was funny, and all was right with the world. It left me with a feeling of contented joy for days, and gave me an ability to deal with upcoming problems in a rational and patient way.

No, they are actually theraputic, causing positive changes that last long after the experience. Mushrooms are not addictive.

No comparison to the real thing.

I didn't get anything the first time, either. The following 27 years it's been effective, though.

lol wha? the smoke you inhale just magically gets absorbed by your lungs? all of it?

It can be devastating yes. Luckily, I don't drink to get drunk all the time, though to be honest, it takes a fair amount to get me properly drunk and then it would be my wallet that was hurting, never mind my liver.

Besides that though, it's usually the odd social drink or pint with lunch for me. Nothing too strenuous.

I've had my share of bad trips. If anything the bad trips make you feel WAY worse than you already would (almost walked into traffic once on a bad trip because I just wanted it to end. Not good. Dear God, dude! That sounds ass. But isn't general advice to only take them in a place you're comfortable in with familiar people and surroundings and a generally relaxed vibe to avoid bad tripping?

See, now that sounds the total opposite and pretty damn cool. It sounds like if they were implemented in an extremely controlled environment where the risk of bad trips is low then they could be quite effective. Depends on the risk factor involved in using them with patients though, I guess.

Just out of curiosity, why is salvia "worse" than other drugs? I recall some frequent drug users here stating that even they stay away from it.

I've never done it, but it sounds like one of those things you either love or hate. I've read of it strongly altering one's perception of gravity, feelings of being trapped as inanimate objects for thousands of years, etc.

I've done magic mushrooms a few times. The experience strongly depends on the environment you're in, couple of time I did them, I freaked the **** out, other times it was pretty awesome. Not a drug to be taken on your own.

Ive tried pretty much everything except shrooms and shooting up. I wouldnt mind maybe. But yeah, everyone I know who has done them says you have to be in a good enviroment. If you were all depressed in a bad mood and then took them I think youd **** out big time.

Because it deconstructs you in a very harsh way. Shrooms are powerful, but the trip is emotionally grounded. With salvia, you're on your own.

I've done shrooms 5 times, and only once was a bad experience. I had drank alcohol beforehand, and my friends had to go home an hour into the trip. So I was alone, and alcohol and psilocin do not mix nicely. I ended up witnessing some of the horrors of my psyche. Undulating gore full of faces, black ichor coursing through every vein and crack, wailing and screaming, endless depths. But it was constructive, because it taught me the extent of what there is to be feared in my mind, and I no longer fear myself in any way.

The rest of my experiences: Induced meditation, the ability to individually discern every layer of flesh in my hands (I cross-referenced with wikipedia, it checked out), objective self-observation of thought, inconceivably sharp and controllable imagination of 3D objects, stronger and more-symmetric emotional connections with friends, joyous laughter, a deep sense of wonder and amazement with the universe, and God pleading with me to listen to him, which I ignored on the basis of being a hard atheist at the time.

All of these experiences took place during my years of clinical depression, and I firmly believe that without them I would have taken my life a long time ago.

sheesh you gotta wonder how much of it is the person who's taking the drug and not the drug. what some of you describe sounds like acid not shrooms. I've had a few bad trips on that but never shrooms

dozens of times. never had a reaction more severe than worrying that my dog had a massive lump on his face. I thought I was hallucinating but nope the dog did have a lump on his face. found out later that my dog had lunged at a friend of mine who came to visit me but thought it was a good idea to walk into my backyard without having met my 75lb dog first. vet said the lunging on the end of a dog chain probably caused his eyes to swell up but that he was otherwise ok

went to a few concerts (fishbone/red hot chilli peppers on shrooms is awesome) and never freaked out. also could drink like a fish on shrooms.

Everybody reacts diferently to it, Stern. I did shrooms three times and the experience was never the same really. The first time was just like the mellow buzz you get from smoking weed. Colors seemed more vibrant and sound was more intense, but I never hallucinated. The second time was probably my most intense drugs experience ever with heavy hallucinating to the point that I was in a world of my own. The third time was basically like the first again, just a tad more intense because someone else in the group had a bad experience.

Psychedelic experiences are strongly influenced by stimuli. Taking shrooms on a sunny afternoon in a field, will give a vastly different experience to taking them at a house party full of people you don't know.

I was in a car with a group of guys who'd down salvia once - I'd turned it down, one of them kept stripping off his clothes because he was so hot, the other almost jumped out of the car while it was driving because he thought the driver was a snake.

lolwut? Your lungs absorb 85-95% of the THC within the first second of inhalation; holding in a hit does nothing to increase the high, and any high experienced is either placebo or lack of oxygen. The semi truth behind this is that many new smokers won't actually inhale any smoke, they may only give a light pull into their mouth, which is generally why many say their first smoke didn't effect them at all.

I've tried shrooms once, had a mixed experience. Wandered around with friends outside for a bit, and watched Dark Side Of The Rainbow. The effects would come in waves, one moment you would be tripping, the next almost stone sober. Sometimes I was happy, sometimes I just felt anxious and disturbed. I would try them again.

lol wha? the smoke you inhale just magically gets absorbed by your lungs? all of it?

No, but if you smoke weed or hookah, then what you can do is drag, suck in some air at the end quickly, and hold for a little while. It will come back up without any smoke. It's called ghosting.

Yeah, that sort of "doing it wrong" is what I'm talking about. They suck on it like a straw, you're supposed to take a deep drag like it's a cigarette and then hold for a couple seconds then breath out. Ghosting is just an easy way to make sure new smokers don't hyperventilate the damn stuff. Getting the air blazed is a waste of money.

Not a huge fan of drugs.

I just had a horrible experience with weed last weekend. I ditched my real friends to go smoke pot with one of my other friends and some people I "knew". Smoked once before and didn't get high. This time, I smoked a lot more than I should have for my second go, and so had to keep telling my self to keep breathing. I also had to block everything else out going around me. It was also pretty horrible because my friend was just acting like it was normal, and apparently it is for some people. They told me that I was acting like I had just done shrooms. I thought I was gonna die in all honesty. At the time, I wasn't aware that I was breathing because my whole throat and mouth was just numb. I remember telling my friend that "if I fell asleep, I would just die". Eventually I did fall asleep at my friend's place and woke up the next morning feeling slightly buzzed, and then I came home and took a shower. At around 7pm the same day, I decided to go hang out with my actual friends at his house. He had some family over at the time, and the house is pretty small. I was standing up and eating a cookie or some shit, and all the sudden I started feeling like I was high again, but this time it was horrible. The whole breathing thing started again, and I began to have an anxiety attack. I called my brother to pick me up and told my friends some shit about the stomach flu or something.

The rest of the weekend was really similar, but nowhere near as bad as the previous nights. The whole breathing thing was still an issue but I was more conscious this time, and could use reasoning. I don't think I really ever want to do drugs of any sort again, if that's what one of the most mellow ones are like.

dude you had an anxiety attack. probably worked yourself up to it

Dear God, dude! That sounds ass. But isn't general advice to only take them in a place you're comfortable in with familiar people and surroundings and a generally relaxed vibe to avoid bad tripping?

I did, and that trip started out really good and awesome. Then I started thinking and bad thoughts while high seem to have sort of a snowball effect with me. A small bad thought just turns into a worse thought, then worse and worse.

Just out of curiosity, why is salvia "worse" than other drugs? I recall some frequent drug users here stating that even they stay away from it.

I don't think it's bad at all. Trip lasts about 5 minutes, and hte afterglow about an hour max (afterglow isn't even bad or anything, just feels weird. Sometimes referred to as a "salvia high")

I was in a car with a group of guys who'd down salvia once - I'd turned it down, one of them kept stripping off his clothes because he was so hot, the other almost jumped out of the car while it was driving because he thought the driver was a snake.

I've done it 3 times and every time I started sweating buckets. One time I ran outside from my friends house in the dead of winter and started ripping off my shirt and taking off my socks lmfao not my pants though oddly enough. I bought a bong last year, and they gave free salvia with purchase of a bong at this store. I still have the full bag of salvia in my dresser, and I doubt I'll ever do it. Salvia highs are just too weird. Unlike any other drug. The actual trip is awesome, but the weird afterglow is just too ****ed up.

This is why I usually only smoke with people I know or by myself. I smoke fairly often (most days, usually only like an hour or two before bed, helps me relax and sleep better) by myself it's awesome and I love it. If I smoked and went outside, even just to go to the store, I hate it. Social interaction isn't my thing sober, let alone high. Although personally I can deal with it just fine, it just puts me in a bad mood around people and I get very very quiet.

The closest I've come to doing non-alcoholic drugs was being in the same room when my friend was toking his bong. I got a bit of that shit in the air and I got the 3rd headache of my life.

Most interesting post in the thread, IMO. The trips sound like pretty amazing experiences for the most part. I assume you didn't have any lasting negative effects from the one bad trip then? Just totally f*cked up at the time?

Last sentence was pretty deep, man. But if it helped you then maybe these Scientists are onto something.

  Alcohol is a drug, and the worst one for all of human society at that.

Far, far worse for the human body (short and long term) than many recreational drugs.

I understand if you have that view because of the legality of other substances. But if it's because of fear for your body then you should reexamine the facts on what you take into your body and what you refuse to.

As far as for me- I've done a lot of shit but not shrooms. If you want a real ride do a hot rail of some methamphetamine and **** someone all night. Take a glass tube you can break a crack pipe to make one pretty fast. Use a torch on the jagged end and heat up the glass until it's orange hot. Snort the line with the orange end on the shit (obviously not on the end your nose is) then after you snort it just exhale and you will exhale a giant cloud of smoke. Pretty crazy. Hurts so good in your nasal area though.

A couple of years ago, I had 3 trips on shrooms. All 3 experiences were vastly different, but truly amazing. I'll give you my experiences, so you have a rough idea of what the impact of shrooms is.

If you want to trip, the most important thing to remember is to be in a familiar environment, and have someone sober present. Also make sure that you have no obligations that day, and the day after. It makes sure you won't worry when the trip doesn't seem to end. If you're about to try them, but are unsure about the results, read up about them. There are loads of online forums with stories of trips and information on shrooms. There are no real negative effects, although in my case I found it weird to look myself in the mirror for a couple of months. This was because I had been watching myself in the mirror for over an hour.

On my first trip, I took a moderate amount together with a friend. We weren't sure how much we should take, because it was our first time. All in all, we just had a great evening at my friend's dorm room. We talked about a lot of stuff, and had to laugh with everything (everything). I did not experience any visuals during this trip.

During our second trip, we decided to take the proper dose. Soon, I was seeing incredible things (breathing walls!), and enjoyed music like I never had before (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synesthesia). Everything tasted different as well (sugar tasted amazing). At one point, I spontaneously started to review how I progressing in life. It was as if I was an outsider that reviewed my life. I realized that I was not the person I imagined myself to be. I was in university slacking off, because I was getting adequate grades anyway. I also stopped playing basketbal two years beforehand, although I had been playing since I was a kid. There were also a lot of people that meant a lot to me, but whom I had been meeting too little. As a result, I took my courses serious, and started to enjoy my studies again. A month later, I picked basketbal up again, and I'm so glad I did (I'm still playing today). I also reconnected with those important friends. In the end, I walked home after a snowstorm, and the city looked truly magical.

My third and final trip was by far the most amazing experience in my entire life. We went outside, and laid down in a parc. It felt like reconnecting with nature. As my previous trip, I also looked at myself, and how satisfied I was with my life. Afterwards, I started to learn how to play the piano (something I wanted to my entire life), did a summer internship (amazing experience as well), and became more extravert towards people.

All in all, I would say that shrooms made me a better and more happy person.

I knew this one Nigerian guy, who was adamant that the best way to take drugs was to be alone in nature, away from towns and civilization in general.

I never did get round to trying it, seeing as we were stuck in Jakarta. But its just turned my birthday. And this thread is full of ideas. par-tay

Already explained this earlier in the thread, dude. I'm not a frequent and heavy drinker - not an alcoholic.

The reason I mentioned that I drink alcohol in the first place was to highlight it was an exception to the anti-drugs stance I usually have, hence why I said I'm not straight edge. Like every other drug, I don't see alcohol as something I need to relax or have a good time.

Snorting crack, shooting up on Heroine and using hallucinogens is not something you usually do in public with your lunch like with the odd beer.

Sounds like a good way to end up eaten by a bear.

I see no difference between doing a little bump of coke vs a pint. It's only taboo because of legality. If this were the 20's no one would give a ****.

There are some places I would love to go and try shrooms from the description. I've been on literal mountaintops of such indescribable beauty (sober, mind you) it has moved me to tears. I can only imagine that stuff while under the influence of psylobicin.
