Communism is why China fell behind. If capitalism won (Nationalist Party, now escaped to Taiwan), China would have been the greatest super power 100x that of US can ever dreamt of even under Kennedy.
 
I think you display a pretty simplistic historical understanding. China 'fell behind' a long time before the communist revolution; it's not as if revolutions ever happen in happy, prosperous countries.

Much as it pains me to agree with Captain Moron, I think that communism is a fad but not in that sense. People (usually middle-class white teenagers) say they're communists and wear Che Guevera t-shirts because it's "cool". None of them actually understand what communism is, mind, and they typically express their outrage at global capitalism whilst sipping a Venti cafe latte in the local Starbucks...
 
I see what you mean. I was about to say I've never encountered champaign socialists, or even latte socialists, but then I realised I had, a lot. Some of them were at a party! With Gordon Brown! Look at me, I'm a social climber!

But fat-chance-with-women clearly means it in a grander political sense as well considering he's talking about China and resources and blah.

On that note I'm well glad we're back to communism vs capitalism. That was a lot more interesting than all this christanity vs atheism or homophobes vs normal people which is pretty boring. And it's totally on topic in this thread as well since Chavez is a damn commie. Score!
 
But... I wasn't talking about emo kids wearing Che Guevera shirts. I was talking about, you know, communism.

Communism is a different ideology from capitalism, one that makes some sense. And while, surely, there are idiots who hang out at Starbucks at night wearing Che Guevera shirts, there are a lot of other kids who are serious about socialist democracies and other liberal forms of government, and know a lot about them.

Calling it a fad is like calling MMO games a fad. It's always gonna stick around because the fundamental ideas are in place and, for better or worse, there will always be a large following.

It's part of being rebellious and anti-establishment. When they grow up, have a house, some retirement savings, funds for their kids college funds, they will be a pure capitalist.

Don't take my hard-earned money away and give to others who are unwilling to work.

Unless I don't have to work and be given money. I'd be in for that.

Human greed makes such impossible. Money will always be around. Even when there is no money, people will find something else to spend on. They'll barder if it means having something valuable. Human nature to want things will never allow such. And don't think this natural part of us is ever going away. That's a fairytale.
